Help with the Hewlett Packard Enterprise article

Hi, Brandon. Thanks again for your help here updating the Acquisitions table. I've given this more thought, and I think there's a much better way to cover acquisitions (and divestitures). Currently, the article mentions some of HPE's acquisitions and divestitures in the 'History' section, then there's a table below. To eliminate redundancy and make the article more complete, I've proposed an 'Acquisitions and divestitures' sub-section for the 'History' section, which includes a simplified table.

If the proposed sub-section text looks good to you, I've noted which (redundant, and sometimes unsourced) claims can be removed from the 'History' section. My goals are to make the article more accurate and complete, and improve flow by grouping all acquisition and divestitures text within a single sub-section, rather than being scattered throughout the page. Do you mind taking a quick look at the proposed changes? Thanks! AMorar HPE (talk) 20:07, 7 January 2020 (UTC)

AMorar HPE, I'm not sure I really like having the table that simple, I think It should at least include the cost of the acquisition. Perhaps of having the text part of the "Acquisitions and divestitures" section, we could have a description column in the table. What do you think? BrandonXLF (talk) 22:32, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

Reviewing FFU requests

Hello BrandonXLF! Thank you for helping to review requests at Wikipedia:Files for upload. If information is not included in a request, but you can easily determine or find that information, you shouldn't decline or delay a request because of that. Please remember to always notify requesting editors when you have commented, accepted, or declined a request. Most of the people requesting uploads are IP editors and don't have the benifit of watchlists or pings. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:30, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

@AntiCompositeNumber: I have since realized that, thanks for uploading them. Is there any particular instance that you have where I didn't notify the requesting user because I would like to see if it was me who did it or if it was my script.BrandonXLF (talk) 22:34, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Turning off restorer script on mobile

Hi Brandon. Thanks for writing the restorer script – it's very useful, especially for cleaning up vandalism from multiple editors on the same page. I had the "fat finger" problem where I'd accidentally click the restore link when scrolling through histories on my mobile phone, and RexxS helpfully showed me that I could turn restorer off on mobile devices by installing it on my vector.js instead of common.js. I wanted to suggest maybe adding that info to the script doc page, so other editors (technically clueless like me) will know how to turn it off on mobile if they want to. I didn't want to edit the doc page directly; I figured I'd mention it here instead. Thanks again for the great script! Cheers, Levivich 02:04, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

@Levivich: I added a "mobile" section explaining that you can install the script at skin.js/vector.js. Do you think it is good enough? Feel free to make any changes to the section if you feel like they will make it more understandable.BrandonXLF (talk) 02:19, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
Looks great! I made a minor copyedit and addition. Thanks for adding it so fast! Levivich 02:46, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

QuickEdit marking all edits as "minor"

Hello BrandonXLF. First of all, thank you very much for your great set of scripts. They are really helpful.

I wanted to report a tiny problem with the QuickEdit script. I have tested it on multiple projects, and on all of them, it marks all edits as "minor", no matter what option (minor/non-minor) you choose. Can you please look into it? Thank you. Ahmadtalk 20:04, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

@Ahmad252: Thanks for letting me know about the issue. The issue should be fixed now, can you try it now? BrandonXLF (talk) 20:22, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Yes, it's fixed now. Thanks a lot. Ahmadtalk 20:30, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Natureofnight

Hi Brandon!

Could you possibly guide me in the right direction to set up an evel knievel museum article and one for co founder Mike Patterson?

Per your advice - I tried several weeks ago & failed miserably. There are far to many Michael Pattersons. Not sure how to distinguish him. Also, on Lathan the name was red. Which doesnt make sense since an article exists?

Mike patterson has more than plenty of external links, etc.

Thank you & hope all is well. Natureofnight (talk) 17:06, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

@Natureofnight: I found a few news sites talking about Michael Patterson using the search https://www.google.com/search?q=Mike+Patterson+%22Evel+Knievel+Museum%22&tbm=nws or https://www.google.com/search?q=Michael+Patterson+%22Evel+Knievel+Museum%22&tbm=nws. It seems like the best way to find him using a query that needs to include Evel Knievel Museum like Mike Patterson "Evel Knievel Museum" or Michael Patterson "Evel Knievel Museum". It seems like Mike Patterson might not be very WP:NOTABLE, if you can't enough about him to make an article, you should consider adding him to a section in the Evel Knievel Museum called "History" or "Founders". As for creating the article Evel Knievel Museum, you should do a search like "Evel Knievel Museum" and read through the WP:RELIABLE sites that come up and start writing the article. At first you don't need sections, but if the lead is becoming too long, you should break the article into sections, remember not the copy and paste copyrighted text (with the exceptions of quotes) because it will become a big legal issue.BrandonXLF (talk) 19:22, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

Thank You

Appreciate the input. Makes sense- I’ll give it a shot.

Thanks again!

Hi Brandon!

I wasnt aware you had assisted in making the museum page legitimate;) Thank you. I thought the old one i had attempted was deleted. Can you assist me i removing the current one i submitted as i wasnt aware? Always appreciate your wiki guidance. If i can help in any way please let me know.

17:22, 29 February 2020 (UTC)Natureofnight (talk)

@Natureofnight: You can just work on the article as you would normally as if it was in the mainspace, don't even worry about submitting it for now, just try to make it as good as possible. Everything seems fine looking at Draft:Evel Knievel Museum, is something missing that was there? BrandonXLF (talk) 18:09, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

EKM

Nothing was missing. I thought jalen had removed the page. I’ll continue to work on it and stay in touch.

Question- Can you explain why lathan’s name would be red when he has an existing article?

Its on the ek page under posthumous recognition. See paragraph below-

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evel_Knievel

In 2017, a 13,000 square foot (1,200 m2) museum honoring Knievel was opened in Topeka, Kansas, by co-founders Lathan Mckay and Mike Patterson. Featuring his motorcycles, leathers, helmets, wardrobe and jewelry along with various displays and a virtual reality motorcycle jump.[73]

Appreciate it 20:53, 29 February 2020 (UTC)Natureofnight (talk)

@Natureofnight: So far it's looking good. Just remeber to include sources. [1] was able to detect some copy and pasted test, so just try to avoid copy and pasting text without paraphrasing it.BrandonXLF (talk) 20:56, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

@Natureofnight: I moved the page from Draft:Evel Knievel Museum to Evel Knievel Museum after making a few changes mostly regarding WP:NOTADVERTISING. Thank you for the barnstar!BrandonXLF (talk) 03:40, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Some time back, I had begun working on such a script myself -- which I'm happy abandon now in favour of yours. There is just one suggestion I would make - when the "quick edit" button is pressed, presently there's no visual feedback, if the parse API call takes time (eg. for a long section), it can get confusing to the user. To fix this, I'd suggest reducing the opacity of entire section text. This was the (slightly hacky) code I used in my script:
var $heading = $(this).parent().parent();
var sectionId = $heading.children().first().attr('id');
var nextUntilSelector = [2,3,4,5,6].filter(function(e) {
	return e <= headingLevel;
}).map(function(e) {
	return 'h' + e;
}).join(', ');
$heading.css('opacity', '0.4');
$heading.nextUntil(nextUntilSelector).css('opacity', '0.4');
I guess you'll have to tweak the first line, the remaining should fit. SD0001 (talk) 03:53, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
I decided to grey out the "quick edit" button since you shouldn't be able to press it again and I also adding some loading dots at the end it indicate that it is loading. I feel like it's better to grey out the button as that's already where the user is looking. Let me know if you have a better idea or any other suggestions.BrandonXLF (talk) 04:48, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Leela52452 (talk) 04:41, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

@Leela52452: It works for me on Fennec 68.6.0. Are you visiting a long page such as Toronto? For the button to show, you need to scroll a little down the page. Also, make sure JavaScript is enabled and you are logged in. I've changed the script to use mw.loader.load, so the CSS you added to your global.css shouldn't be needed anymore and it might have fixed your issue.BrandonXLF (talk) 06:24, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

firefox for andoid aka fennec 68.6.0 tried scrolling upto middle and end on toronto page

steps:

  • uninstall
  • fresh installation
  • login
  • button not working
  • reset preferences and global references to default
  • quit w/clear private data
  • login
  • button not working
  • removed global.css
  • quit w/clear private data
  • login
  • button not working

excuse for the noise. Leela52452 (talk) 09:12, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Leela52452, it seems like global.js doesn't load on mobile.Try adding mw.loader.load('/w/index.php?title=User:BrandonXLF/ToTopButton.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); // [[User:BrandonXLF/ToTopButton.js]] to Special:MyPage/common.js. BrandonXLF (talk) 20:50, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

@BrandonXLF: thank you for new code. unfortunately it is not working. Leela52452 (talk) 01:18, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

@Leela52452: Sorry for any confusion, but you need to try that code on User:Leela52452/common.js since global.js pages don't seem to work on mobile. This is only for testing so we can find out what the issue is.BrandonXLF (talk) 01:22, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Script

Hello again, in the hope I'm not abusing too much, I would like to ask you, if possible, for a bookmarklet script that adds prefix and suffix to all the elements in the <textarea>. The prefix and suffix are pre-defined ("((" and "))"), so there is no need to ask the user to introduce them. Thank you in advance. —  Ark25  (talk) 03:54, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Ark25, I don't mind. What do you mean by all the elements in a textarea? A textarea is an element that cannot contain other elements, the only thing it can contain is text. BrandonXLF (talk) 04:04, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
I mean all the lines, sorry. —  Ark25  (talk) 04:05, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Ark25, javascript:(function(){for(var e=document.getElementsByTagName('textarea'),i=0;i<e.length;i++)e[i].value='(('+e[i].value.split("\n").join('))\n((')+'))'})(); should work. BrandonXLF (talk) 04:16, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
It works in Firefox but not in Chrome - at least for me. But that's still great, thank you! —  Ark25  (talk) 04:23, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Glitch makes Floating TOC add see-through recent changes on some pages

Hi! With Floating TOC, there is a glitch that causes a floating see-through recent changes pop up on some pages that have a recent changes module loaded, like Wikipedia:WikiProject Socialism. This is not a TOC and is illegible, covering up content.

Note: I am on Firefox, so there is a slight chance this is caused by the browser interpreting the script wrong.

Please fix this! Thanks for the cool script. DemonDays64 (talk) 14:32, 17 April 2020 (UTC) (please ping on reply)

DemonDays64, the issue was caused because Wikipedia:WikiProject Socialism/Recent changes was using the element id toc for the recent changes list which made the script think it was the TOC. BrandonXLF (talk) 18:33, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Oh thanks for getting back to me so quickly! That's interesting. I think that I might change it (and leave a message on the talk page to make sure it's ok). Thanks, DemonDays64 (talk) 18:47, 17 April 2020 (UTC)!

Invitation to RedWarn

Hello, BrandonXLF! I noticed you have been using Twinkle and was wondering if you'd like to beta test my new tool, RedWarn, specifically designed to improve your editing experience.

  • Easy to use - Unlike other tools, RedWarn uses easy to interpret icons and simple summaries for common actions, reducing both learning and reading times.
  • Supports rollback and rollback-like functionality - Unlike Twinkle, RedWarn supports both rollback and rollback-like functionality for users will rollback permissions. This decreases waiting times during rollbacks.
  • Making life easier on the battlefield - Ever been in the middle of a vandalism war or campaign, frantically reloading the history page to see a new edit? No more! Enabling RedWarn's "Alert on Change" feature will automatically send you to the latest edit when a new edit occurs - and if you're working on something else, RedWarn will send you a notification while the tab is still open in the background. No time wasted.
  • Rollback previews - If you're ever worried about the changes a rollback will make, especially in the case of reverting good faith edits, you can click the rollback preview button to preview the difference a rollback will make, with the version that will be restored on the right, and the latest revision on the left.
  • Always the latest revision - RedWarn will automatically redirect you to the latest revision if the rollback is no longer for the latest revision - no more frustrating errors.
  • Fast - RedWarn can automatically select a warning level, and, on vandalism and content removal rollbacks, automatically select a warning template.
  • Built on your feedback - RedWarn is receiving frequent feature additions and changes based on your feedback. If there's something you don't like, or would like to see, just say!
  • and many more features ...but I don't want to fill your userpage.

RedWarn is currently in use by over 35 other Wikipedians, and feedback so far has been extremely positive. If you're interested, please see see the RedWarn tool page for more information on RedWarn's features which I haven't listed here. Otherwise, feel free to remove this message from your page. If you have any further questions, please ping me or leave a message on my talk page. Your feedback is much appreciated! Ed6767 talk! 00:46, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

I just discovered the yearly talk page archives you made for this page, and was wondering why you split them into yearly archives. This is a pretty non-standard system and seems to have stopped the normal archive bot operations. Was there a discussion about splitting those in that way? -- Netoholic @ 18:56, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Netoholic, I believe I did it because Talk:Rock paper scissors/Archive older then 2007 was getting very long and it was easier to manually split the page based on date rather than making a new page when a size threshold is met. The bot was misconfigured and it should work as expected now. BrandonXLF (talk) 19:21, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Yes but why not just use standard numbered archives? The talk page does not get nearly enough traffic to warrant yearly ones. Where was the discussion that resulted in doing this different from most other article talk page archives? -- Netoholic @ 19:24, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Netoholic, I just said why I used yearly archives, there's was no discussion about the archive format so you can go ahead and use the standard numbered archives if you'd like. BrandonXLF (talk) 19:29, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Would you mind helping by tagging the yearly archives with {{db-user}} (full list can be seen at Special:PrefixIndex/Talk:Rock paper scissors). I'll take care of moving the bot-created archives. -- Netoholic @ 19:33, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Netoholic, I can do that once the archives are emptied. BrandonXLF (talk) 19:43, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Please stop manipulating archives. 150k is pretty standard, there's no reason at all to reduce to 75k arbitrarily, especially when sections go missing in the change. Let the bots do the work. Please put in for the speedy deletions, including your Archive 3. --Netoholic @ 23:52, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Netoholic, ok I g7ed the 3rd archive. Having 116 discussions in one archive is a little much, no sections went missing that I'm aware of so I'm not sure what you're talking about. 150k works for standard talk pages, but there's a lot of short discussions on Talk:Rock_paper_scissors. I chose 75k as it's used in the example config at WP:ARCHIVE. BrandonXLF (talk) 05:43, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
We are likely the only two living editors to look at these archives at all in a long time. Sure, Archive_1 is a lot of small discussions, but chances are no one will need to go back to them for something important. The 75k number mentioned there is for when to archive the live talk page - the actual archive pages can be much longer because they aren't actively edited, and the bot config examples use 150k for the most part. But now we can have an archive search box on the main talk page, and that will be a benefit in locating past discussions. My huge worry was just that I saw in a couple of your edits some text go missing and content end up under the wrong headings. Manually moving sections is always tricky. Thanks for your help, I think its in a much more maintainable arrangement now. -- Netoholic @ 05:57, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Film Articles

Hi, the plot and cast sections of film articles are not usually referenced because they are primary sourced from the film itself, regards Atlantic306 (talk) 23:19, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Ok, I was vaguely aware that was the case for the plot, but I didn't know that is the case for the cast as well, it doesn't mention that at MOS:FILM. BrandonXLF (talk) 23:27, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Updated and synced with the SCP website

Hi BrandonXLF,

Might the article on the SCP be updated with information from the SCP website, perhaps in the way in which I did this morning, or something close to it? Right now, wiki complains about it being a stub and call for expanding it.

All the best,

Daniel Howard-Snyder Executive Committee, SCP — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daniel Howard-Snyder (talkcontribs) 00:40, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Daniel Howard-Snyder, yes it can be, but you are not allowed to copy and paste text directly from sources as that is a copyright violation. Also, be careful when using a primary source, see WP:PRIMARY. BrandonXLF (talk) 02:05, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Hot Default Sort blank at first position issue

I've noticed this repeatedly while doing CW Error #88 cleanup, your tool inserts a blank that should not be there. This edit shows it happening. Jerod Lycett (talk) 01:06, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Jerodlycett, it seems that people were adding a space before the value when using the tool, the tool now removes whitespace before and after the value. BrandonXLF (talk) 01:56, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank you very much! Jerod Lycett (talk) 02:08, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

QuickEdit and badtoken errors

I was wondering whether you could the ability to do an automated retry on badtoken errors? It occurs on spending too much time in the editbox following which the only way out is to copy the whole section content, reload the page and try again. I have encountered it too many times.

As for the fix, as you must be knowing, just look for the API errorcode badtoken and if it occurs get a new token using action=query&meta=tokens&type=csrftoken and use that to re-send the edit. mw.Api()#edit and mw.Api()#postWithToken() handle this automatically, so you could also consider just switching to that rather than do manual $.posts. A tag has been placed on Category:ISO 639 templates requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Scripts

Hi, 2 of your scripts are not working named 'Autoref' and 'Citoid'. I've installed them both, but not working. However, I don't use visual editor. Are these scripts for VE? Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 07:22, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Empire AS, Citoid is a utility that is used by other scripts, so it should not be installed. Autoref should work fine, just to clarify it changes the way the "Reference" button works and doesn't create its own button. Let me know if you still encounter an issue with it. BrandonXLF (talk) 07:33, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
BrandonXLF, But where does it appear. In visual mode or in source mode, in side bar or toolbar? Empire AS Talk! 07:39, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
Empire AS, it appears in the classic editor (non VE) at the toolbar at the top. It looks like . BrandonXLF (talk) 07:42, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
I found it. But it doesn't work. I added a raw ref in it and it didn't expand? Empire AS Talk! 07:53, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
Empire AS, did you see a popup that said: "Enter a source:"? If you did, provide the raw reference you were trying to expand. If you didn't, provide any errors that are in the developer console (Ctrl+Shift+J on Chrome). BrandonXLF (talk) 08:10, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
BrandonXLF, it isn't good and complicated. Is there any way to run it throughout the article to remove errors. Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 08:15, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
Empire AS, what do you mean to run it throughout the article? If you mean fixing references already in the article you could try WP:CITATIONBOT or you could try User:BrandonXLF/ReferenceExpander if you want to expand references. BrandonXLF (talk) 08:24, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
BrandonXLF, Refs Expander doesn't shows preview and it also fails to expand some refs. Can you update it more? Empire AS Talk! 08:29, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

User:BrandonXLF/ReferenceExpander isn't working for some references

Hello Brandon, User:BrandonXLF/ReferenceExpander isn't working for some references. Same as this. I believe this is happening because of this bug. MediaWiki:RefToolbar.js also had this bug. I reported that here & user:Kaldari fixed it. If you have time, please take a look into this. Thank you. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 22:44, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

আফতাবুজ্জামান, it should be fixed now. BrandonXLF (talk) 02:56, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
Yes. But there is a new problem. It is turning decoded url into encoded. Because of that some url might not work. For example, see this, after reference expanding the url isn't working. It would be great if the gadget try not to change the url. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 03:23, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
আফতাবুজ্জামান, the issue is that Citoid is returning a non-normalized URL that when normalized becomes the wrong URL. This seems to be more of an issue with Citoid rather than this script. BrandonXLF (talk) 04:15, 12 September 2020 (UTC) আফতাবুজ্জামান, I managed the fix it by encoding the URL Citoid returns, it should work now.BrandonXLF (talk) 04:32, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
Yes, working. Thank you. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 04:57, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
