Fair use images

[edit]

We generally have a policy against fair use images on the Main Page, and for good reason. In cases like this when it is more or less unavoidable that we use a fair use image, I think it's only prudent to use one that stretches fair use as little as possible. Hence, using the logo rather than a screenshot. I'm goimg to change it back.--Pharos 04:21, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Previous TV show articles have used fair-use images of characters on the main page. This image is no different. Let Raul decide how he thinks it should be handled, since he has the most experience in these matters. For example, in the case of Doctor Who, this was the main page image. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-5 04:24
  • See also the main page pictures for 1984 (TV programme), Blackadder, Casablanca, Porgy and Bess. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-5 04:29
    • Raul has done a great job at handling the FA process, but this is not a featured article issue; it applies equally to all Main page images. We just should not be perpetuating previous sometimes-poor copyright practice here. For that image to be in the Arrested Development article there has to be a detailed fair use rationale, which there is: "describes a character and content specifically detailed", and which does not apply to use on the Main Page.--Pharos 04:46, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Raul has done a great job at handling the FA process... I'll second that. --Duk 05:14, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • I'm not sure that the practice is "poor". I have listed several other rationale on the image page, and I'd like a more qualified opinion on the matter before undoing this in the face of previous instances in which such activity was allowed unquestioned. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-5 04:49
      • Can you accept Image:GOB on stage.jpg as an alternative, since its rationale is in all circumstances stronger? (it is a publicity photo released by the network which owns the copyright, intended for wide distribution to promote the show) — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-5 04:52
        • What about Image:Arrested Development cast promo photo.jpg? That one looks even more publicity-ish to me, as it doesn't appear to be from a screenshot. Of course the dimensions are a bit odd, but there's no reason we couldn't make it over 100px wide.--Pharos 05:03, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
          • I added a source for the photo I suggested above. It was from the largest AD fan site, which communicates regularly with the creators of the show. The photo came from their directory called "Promotional" and labelled "Photos from the Publicity", as did the image you suggested. I would prefer the GOB on stage image, for the sake of proper dimensions. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-5 05:08
            • Would there be any great harm in showing Image:Arrested Development cast promo photo.jpg at 150px, which looks like a decent scale to me? If you really think that's too much, then I suppose I won't object to Image:GOB on stage.jpg as it's at least considerably better on fair use terms than the current image. I leave it to you. Of course these issues really should be worked out beforehand... I think we'll have to brew up some clear guidelines in the Wikipedia namespace.--Pharos 05:31, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
              • See my comment at the bottom of this page. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-5 05:36

We've been using fair use images on the main page FA about 10-20 % of the time (since Aug) and occasionally for at least the last year. Still, we should try not to use fair use images at all, except in rare circumstances, IMO. I just noticed that TFA will have fair use images for three days in a row, starting today. That's too much. --Duk 05:16, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I've found an acceptable alternative. This is a promotional photo, and I've completely removed the blue man screenshot from the article. All should now be well with the world. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-5 05:24

{{editprotected}} Please remove the fair use image. Per WP:NFCC specifically #9. — Moe ε 17:20, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please change the current bolded link from Arrested Development to a piped link to Arrested Development (TV series). Thanks. Carcharoth 14:13, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
