Publisher Extra no longer available

[edit]

Back when access was still account based, we would get access to all Publisher Extra features and publications. Is there a way to access this using the proxy method, or is it something that is no longer available? Yeeno (talk) 10:16, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am having the same problem. I hope the limitation is only temporary. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:41, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, works for me. I was able to browse the 03 Jul 1978 Boston Globe, which I believe is a Publisher Extra feature. Maybe try tossing the cookies in your browser? See also links at the bottom of Wikipedia:Newspapers.com#Using_the_"Clipping"_function. Cxbrx (talk) 03:21, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Teblick @Cxbrx: I was able to access my page while logged in by replacing newspage in the url with image. For example, if I access https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/newspage/436990449/, I run into a paywall, but https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/image/436990449/ works fine. Yeeno (talk) 03:45, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Yeeno! I will try that technique. Eddie Blick (talk) 03:50, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is happening to me now, as of last night (so 5 April 2024). Accessing as usual through TWL, I can't see any search results, they all take me to the "Upgrade to a Publisher Extra Subscription to view this page" popup. I think I can see my own old clippings fine. Anyone else? Penny Richards (talk) 14:23, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Update: got it working in another browser. Probably a cache problem. Penny Richards (talk) 20:54, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like the same issue for me, too. By chance, are/were you operating through Safari on MacOS? The paywall pops up when I try to load up The Journal (Newcastle upon Tyne) on Safari - my older clippings are loading just fine - but on Google Chrome, the popup doesn't appear. Hullian111 (talk) 20:07, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
MacOS, but Firefox--it's been working fine since I cleared cache, though. Penny Richards (talk) 00:29, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can't Clip articles.

[edit]

I have access to Newspapers.com through my Ancestry account, but I don't have Publishers Extra and I'm not going to get it because I ONLY use Newspapers.com for references in Wikipedia articles.

Previously, I was able to clip any articles through my Wikipedia Library account after signing in to Newspapers with my Ancestry account. For over a week now, that hasn't worked. So I tried something else.

I log into my Wikipedia library account and go to Newspapers.com. I pick an article and try to make a clipping. When I'm prompted to log in or create a new account, I try to create a new one. Then I get a message, "There was an error while loading the form. Please contact customer support." This has been happening for over a week. The suggestion to clear cookies was a very good one. However, that didn't change anything.

What should I do? I know there is a site to contact Wikipedia tech support so they can contact Newspapers.com, but where can I find that?

Newspapers.com is critical to creating solid references readers can use to verify articles. You would not BELIEVE the nonsense I've found in claims that had sources that were supposedly unverifiable. Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 03:28, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You may need to toss some cookies associated with oclc.org from your browser. See Wikipedia:Newspapers.com#Using_the_"Clipping"_function.. Cxbrx (talk) 05:49, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Oona Wikiwalker I believe Ancestry logins are currently broken for Newspapers.com (T322916). In the meantime you'll want to register a new account (not within the library), and then log into that from within the library. Apologies that this is a little convoluted :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 09:11, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'll try that right away. Newspapers.com is so vital, IMHO, to providing verifiability to articles here. It seem like an extremely wise investment by Wikipedia. Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 19:51, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a way to sign up for a free account without getting roped into a free trial? I don't know what'll happen at the end of the trial. (Internet outages, work demands, life demands.) That's why I don't sign up for free trials I don't intend to migrate through to paid subscriptions. Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 19:56, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've gotten the new format https://access-newspaperarchive-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/CLIPURL to work with https://newspaperarchive.com/CLIPURL MacAddct1984 (talk | contribs) 20:47, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Error message

[edit]

@Nick Number: Over the past week, on clicking "View Clip" after saving, the clipped article appears for a second and is then replaced by the message, "This page is not available. This page is pending publication, has been removed or moved to a new location." However, this does not prevent the URL from being converted to WP format where it works fine. DMBanks1 (talk) 15:07, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DMBanks1: I've been getting that too. It has been slightly annoying (especially when citing more than usual for the Reliability drive), but clicking the bookmarklet does make it go away, so I've mostly been ignoring it. Nick Number (talk) 16:30, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm having the same issue with clippings, and it is very annoying. Nick Number, can you explain what you mean by "clicking the bookmarklet"? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 22:07, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just adding a +1 to this thread, the site loads correctly but every search results in "There was a problem loading the search results. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact us." I've deleted all OCLC cookies, all Newspapers.com cookies, even the Wikipedia Library cookies. (Nick Number) -- Zanimum (talk) 23:50, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also getting the search results error in the last couple hours. This seems to happen periodically and usually resolves within a few hours. The clipping problem has been persistent for at least a week now. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:55, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm getting both of the errors described in this thread as well. Chrome and Firefox, both mobile and desktop.
@Jweiss11: see here for details about the bookmarklet that Nick Number created. Tl;dr: create a bookmark and paste the following code in the URL field:
javascript:var url = window.location.toString();var newurl = url.replace('www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org', 'www.newspapers.com');var newurl = newurl.replace('access-newspaperarchive-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org', 'newspaperarchive.com');window.location = newurl;
When you have a clipped article open, click on the bookmark and it will convert the long URL to the shorter URL (which doesn't give the error message). Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:07, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've posted a similar bookmarklet at The Wikipedia Library for toggling between Newspapers.com and OCLC versions of pages. Nick Number (talk) 17:51, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

@Nick Number: Loading error message appearing on sign in page today. Are you having the same problem? DMBanks1 (talk) 14:33, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DMBanks1: Yes, I'm getting "There was an error while loading the form. Please contact customer support". Nick Number (talk) 15:49, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that error when I load the login page. If I then still enter my U/P and press enter, it additionally gives the error: "There was a problem verifying you are not a robot. Please try again or refresh the page." PK-WIKI (talk) 21:01, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sign in on OCLC is still not working, coming up on a month later now. PK-WIKI (talk) 21:36, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Worse, deleting cookies fixes nothing Mach61 17:19, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ever since we had to start using this through the Wikipedia Library, it seems like there is always some sort of problem. When we could just go on Newspapers.com directly, I don't recall having any issues. Just a thought. Thanks, ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:20, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Have the same issue too. Tried deleting cookies. It didn’t help. Phatblackmama (talk) 22:35, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After trying all yesterday, I started again over 3 hours ago but no luck. I'm wondering if the access through Wiki has been permanently withdrawn. DMBanks1 (talk) 15:46, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Given that:
  • Many of the recurring issues, including this one, seem to be with their bot-detection system, and of them seem to be with the OCLC proxy system.
  • The OCLC proxy system is presumably used by other institutional customers (libraries etc) who are likely a substantial portion of their customer base, and
  • Wikipedia Library access is probably a very small percentage of their traffic (i.e, no strong incentive to frustrate us into becoming individual paying users), and may well function as a loss leader because clips we make are linked from a popular public website
  • Sending Wikipedia Library traffic through their existing OCLC proxy is likely much simpler for them than having to individually activate free accounts as was previously done
I would tend to suspect that this is not a deliberate attempt by the site to exclude us. More likely it is one or more of:
  • They're having larger problems with the OCLC proxy system as a whole and customer support is already up to their ears
  • Because Wikipedia Library users have different characteristics than a typical institutional customer (more spread out in geography and time zone versus a city or university library's users would be, for example), they may be more likely to trigger the bot-detection systems
  • As a relatively minor customer, Wikipedia Library may not be a high priority for support, especially if unique fixes are needed
While the frequent interruptions are frustrating, and I hope Wikipedia Library staff are able to work with Newspapers.com to fix these issues, I doubt this is deliberate malice. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:18, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1415926535, I agree with your assessment, but this is pretty annoying. Jweiss11 (talk) 13:54, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for intruding on this conversation, but has there been any updates about this? When I log into the Wikipedia Library, it still says that access to Newspapers.com is temporarily unavailable and I get a "T322916" error. Aoba47 (talk) 16:48, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pi.1415926535: Since you have a better grasp of the issue than most, when do you expect the clipping function to be restored? Should we be assuming it is not imminent. I was two clippings away from doing a substantial article update 9 days ago. Should we just be publishing article changes with the newspaper citations but no clippings? DMBanks1 (talk) 15:03, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The info must per verified though. User:DMBanks1 if you need help right now let me know. Timur9008 (talk) 15:24, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Timur9008: Do you have a way to sign in and thus create clippings? DMBanks1 (talk) 15:33, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I'm a subscriber. Timur9008 (talk) 15:38, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Timur9008: I need clippings for: The Hope Standard, Mar 2, 2006, page A14 "Movie Business Booming in Hope" (top left of page) and The Hope Standard, Dec 10, 2015, page A10 "Planet of the Apes" (right side of page to include narrative and photo below). DMBanks1 (talk) 16:07, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
 Done [1], [2] Timur9008 (talk) 16:14, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Timur9008: Many thanks DMBanks1 (talk) 16:30, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DMBanks1: I don't have any insight into the timeline, unfortunately. My post above was just based on what's been discussed on this page. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:13, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Still not working. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:39, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am having the same problem. I have contacted support. LuxembourgLover (talk) 23:31, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Courtesy link to the Phabricator ticket where this is discussed: T322916 Bsoyka (tcg) 21:56, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, AstonishingTunesAdmirer just posted a cookie-based workaround for the logon issue which allows the creation of clippings. Nick Number (talk) 17:57, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Cloudflare error signing in to Newspapers.com without proxy

[edit]

After several months without access to Newspapers.com or the Wikipedia proxy, I went back to try.

I notice there's a new Cloudflare checkbox / CAPTCHA on the login page of the no-proxy https://www.newspapers.com/

Verify you are human — Cloudflare

Checking the checkbox, I get the errors:

Error — Having trouble? Send Feedback
We were unable to verify your browser. Please contact customer support

Trying to log in via the proxy site, I don't see the Cloudflare checkbox but do immediately see the error:

There was an error while loading the form. Please contact customer support

Is anyone else experiencing this Cloudflare error and is there any solution?

PK-WIKI (talk) 07:20, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have not seen the Cloudflare error in awhile. One think would be to toss cookies for oclc.org, newspapers.com, anything wiki* hosts and try again. See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T322916 for details about wikipedia/newspapers.com issues. A few days ago, I followed the August 14, 2024 instructions about cookies under Firefox on a Mac and just now was able to connect to newspapers.com via https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/26/, noted that I was still logged in to newspapers.com and successfully clip an article. Cxbrx (talk) 12:03, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When I sign in directly through Newspapers.com, it seems like everything I click on requires Publishers Extra for some reason. When I try to sign in through the Wikipedia Library, it won't let me ("There was an error while loading the form. Please contact customer support") ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:04, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have had as similar issue that has been going on for MONTHS now. I am no longer able to really use the service. Very frustrating as I used Newspapers.com frequently through the Wikipedia Library when editing articles. -Drown Soda (talk) 01:54, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9 @Drown Soda I had the same problem. https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T322916#10065665 works for me on Firefox. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 14:05, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Cloudflare issue specifically seems to be a problem with Safari (web browser) on macOS. Using Firefox on the same machine does not require the CAPTCHA checkbox. PK-WIKI (talk) 00:28, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
