A study of the structure, classification, infection cycle, and host response of viruses that infect animals, plants and bacteria. Human viruses are emphasized in the lecture. Viruses are studied as biological agents, as pathogens and as tools for biomedicine and biological discovery.
In addition to material covered in the textbook, each student in the course will summarize information and give a presentation on one virus. The topic of the virus project will form the basis of the student Wikipedia writing assignment.
