This course traces a colourful history from the mid-seventeeth century to the present, moving through key playwrights, playtexts and productions, including the globally successful melodramas of Dionysius Boucicault; Augusta Gregory’s work with Irish mythology; the tragedy of Marina Carr; the existentialism of Samuel Beckett; and the slap-stick divised comedy of Charabanc. Through creative and intellectual engagement, this course will illuminate the politics – national, postcolonial, gendered and global – that express themselves through Irish theatre. Students will work with Wikipedia to improve existing resources on the canon of Irish theatre.
