Template:Left (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Template:Left2 (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Propose merging Template:Left with Template:Left2.
we have an unfortunate situation where {{center}} and {{right}} do not match {{left}}. luckily, there are less than 500 transclusions of {{left}} and {{left2}}, so we solving the problem is tractable. note, there is also {{align}}. Frietjes (talk) 23:13, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Using left / center / right
left
center
right
Using left2 / center / right
left
center
right
  • comment the practical difference appears to be when you don't use the first unnamed parameter in either template, and there could also be a practical difference when used in a sortable table? in any event, suggestions for resolving this unfortunate naming problem are welcome. Frietjes (talk) 23:18, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I'm also unhappy with the current discrepancy of {{center}} / {{right}} / {{left2}}, especially if we look at the links at d:Q15581676. So I'm both hands for supplanting the name "left" for the functionality of the present {{left2}}. The difference between them is not in the usage of any parameters, but in the fact that {{left}} relies on adding table cell properties, so if used in a cell where the properties are already set e.g. via some other template (as is usual in RDTs), it just doesn't work. However, there are several issues:
    -- YLSS (talk) 07:22, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • any replacements with {{align}} were temporary to find incorrect uses, and have been undone. note, that there are still some uses which are causing formatting problems by introducing gaps in the route diagrams, for example, here. Frietjes (talk) 17:13, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
      • Ah yes, that is a known issue, but I always forget about it — because I do not perceive it, in the link you provided everything looks fine for me. AFAIK, it only occurs in Firefox, but not in Chrome or IE (or is it related to OS?). If there is a div to the right in a table cell, it often gets broken in Firefox, but not in other browsers, even if it contains the longest piece of text in the entire column. This can be cured by placing the rest of the text in that cell into a div to the left, and everything will be fine in all browsers, unless that cell is the "longest", in which case it gets broken in all browsers, regardless of any nowraps... I have some ideas how to deal with this, but that will necessitate the complete upheaval of {{BS}} etc., I haven't properly tested that as yet. YLSS (talk) 19:07, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Proposal, how about if we change {{left}} to the following
{{#if:{{{1|}}}
|<div style="float:left;">{{{1|}}}</div>
|style="text-align:left"{{!}}
}}
I have already added tracking to {{left}} to see where |1= is being used, which was only added about a year ago. any uses tracked there could be changed from {{left|foo}} to {{left}}foo if necessary. however, in about 99% of cases, it will still work as intended if the code is updated to the proposed version. Frietjes (talk) 17:18, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe this can work indeed... YLSS (talk) 19:07, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
should work, given the lack of entries in Category:Pages using left with optional parameters and Category:Pages using left2 with no content, which means there are no pages using {{left}} with |1= and no pages using {{left2}} without |1=, so the proposed code would work for both. Frietjes (talk) 22:03, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I would advise waiting a couple of days before saying that. From my practice, tracking categories may be gradually filled up for several days. YLSS (talk) 22:13, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
normally true, but not so when someone has purged all pages transcluding the two templates. Frietjes (talk) 14:22, 7 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Template:User ru-no (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Non-English and, apparently, offensive template. Google translates it as "This member knows the Russian language, but speaks it reluctantly and tries to avoid it." I declined a speedy deletion request because it does not fit into any current category, but I agree with the sentiment that it is not an appropriate of template space. we don't need these, better to just expand the coverage of the center class in MediaWiki:Common.css if class=center isn't working. Frietjes (talk) 22:27, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
