Links in an email of a change in an article

[edit]

Don't know if you can help. When a notice is emailed and it's involves a Disamb name, in this case Kevin Ware (basketball), and you click on:

See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware_(basketball)&diff=0&oldid=548058195 for all changes since your last visit.

I think these links should take you to the right page and NOT

Kevin Ware

I am sure this a just a glitch in the system and can be fixed easily. Thanks for looking into. Kennvido (talk) 00:10, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Clicking on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware_(basketball)&diff=0&oldid=548058195 takes me right to the "show changes" page for that page (Shows quite a few changes, of which some are details being removed and others are questionable things being added without a lot of references). User:Technical 13   ( C • M • Click to learn how to view this signature as intended ) 00:17, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia sends plain text mails and not html mails. There are good reasons for that. A plain text mail can only contain a plain text url with no link formatting. If the url is clickable for you then it is your mail software which tries to indentify url's in plain text and make them work as links. Your mail software probably guesses that url's end at parentheses so it shortens http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware_(basketball)&diff=0&oldid=548058195 to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware. You can copy-paste the url to your browser instead. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:26, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Murder Trilogy

[edit]

Not to be confused with the splendid write-up about the music, an e-book of the same title, provides entertainment by display of the stageplays of Frank Warren Swacker, based upon his books. members.authorsguild.net/fswacker — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.97.82.251 (talk) 01:00, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this is a suggestion for improving an article, please post it on that article's talk page. I removed some of the tags in your post, since they were hiding the signature. RudolfRed (talk) 01:44, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Selfridge ANG Base Air Show in 1979

[edit]

I am a retired USAF Vet. and I am trying to find out what month the Air Show was on at Selfridge ANG Base in 1979?. I have been looking for a long time and I have yet to find an answer. Please help me with this.

Thank you very much in advance.

There's an on-base museum. You could contact them and see if one of the volunteers knows. http://www.selfridgeairmuseum.org/. Next time, ask at WP:RD. The help desk is for questions on how to use Wikipedia. RudolfRed (talk) 05:25, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You might also ask (email) <ruchniat@comcast.net>, who has pictures from the show on his site here. That was just the first of a ton of results from this Google search. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 05:32, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Editing templates

[edit]

So I'm here just want to ask how I edit {{Singlechart}} because I wanna add Creative Disc to it. Can I? Ggdlmnt (talk) 08:04, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You would need to ask Kww; it is a grotesque template.--Launchballer 14:09, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to the editnotice for the page (at Template:Editnotices/Page/Template:Singlechart, it is *not* grotesque, it is hideously complex. There *is* a difference. (I just don't know what it is. :) :) :) ).Naraht (talk) 15:23, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It might be better to leave a note in Template_talk:Singlechart and then put a {{talkback|Template talk:Singlechart}} on kww's talk page. He's added new countries in the past, there is a thread on the template talk page about adding in Poland.Naraht (talk) 15:28, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to use Wiki

How do we use Wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.167.23.72 (talk) 11:14, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at Book:Wikipedia: The Missing Manual. Roger (talk) 11:39, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I put an episode list (using Template:Japanese episode list) under the "Episodes" header in Gakuen Heaven, but it's showing up under the "Reception" header. What's the deal?--Atlantima (talk) 13:49, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed with this edit. The template documentation says you need this header and footer text above and below the template calls. -- John of Reading (talk) 14:02, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. --Atlantima (talk) 19:56, Today (UTC+1)

Infobox

[edit]

Why can't i add an infobox on weidipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lawchristinelaw (talkcontribs) 14:33, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When using an infobox the parameters need to match those specified for that type of infobox; see Template:Infobox. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:39, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that I have moved the article to From Hand to Art (disambiguation not reaquired), tidied up some of the formatting and removed the gallery of screenshots (they are copyvios and tagged for deletion as such at Commons). --ukexpat (talk) 15:36, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Using Text from or Own Organization's Web Page

[edit]

Hello,

The Sophia Smith Collection, a women's history archive, would like to create articles on Wikipedia about the notable women whose papers reside in our collection. We wanted to do this by using the text from our finding aids - which we own the copyright to - as text for the article.

However, when we recently attempted to save an article on Dorothy Hamilton Brush, we were told we could not copy-paste information from other website. We understand and respect the need for articles to be original. However, since we own the copyright information to the text that we have copy-pasted, we were wondering if we could make it clear in some way that we are not plagiarizing, but publishing our own original information.

Thank you, The Sophia Smith Collection — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sscwmhist (talkcontribs) 14:42, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:Donating copyrighted material. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:45, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And also note that even if the copyright issue is resolved, the material may still not be suitable for Wikipedia if, for example, the tone is too promotional. And, notability is determined by references to multiple reliable sources.--ukexpat (talk) 15:21, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll note that this is an apparently scholarly, curated collection of documents and photos in support of women's studies at Smith College, which, on spec, would be considered a reliable source, IMO. If the copyright issue is resolved, it would seem to be of substantial benefit to Wikipedia to not only have access to the images, but also some dedicated historians in the field working on our articles. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 17:42, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it would be a valuable addition to Wikipedia. I was merely cautioning that fixing the copyright issue isn't necessarily the end of the possible issues.--ukexpat (talk) 18:57, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Now admins have blocked the account per WP:ORGNAME (instead of maybe negotiating a new name to be moved to ).
@Sscwmhist: please see my comment at User_talk:Sscwmhist#Ruth Frances Woodsmall. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 06:02, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I thoroughly agree on the issue of the collection's websites being reliable sources. Archivists at my university have the authority to give permissions and release rights; if Smith College's archivists have the same authority, I expect that we would be satisfied with something like "The people using accounts ___, ___, and ___, have the authority to copy content from any of our web pages and release them under CC-by-sa-3.0 and GFDL". I've left some comments about the WP:GLAM process and asked them to do their best to be unblocked properly. Nyttend (talk) 14:48, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think this would be an ideal case for a template specific to this organisation acknowledging the license pursuant to which the material is being released. If the permission is communicated to OTRS we will review it quickly to avoid any copyvio problems. There are a few donation-specific templates that someone could use as a model for something similar here.--ukexpat (talk) 15:15, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First time edit/problem with <ref> in article

[edit]

From "Killing of Travis Alexander," article states Jodi and Travis started dating in February of 2007, Jodi moved to Mesa Arizona. Factually speaking, and a key piece of information in the murder trial is that she did not move to Mesa until after they broke up.

As a first time editor on wiki, I added 'After the two broke up on June 29, 2007, Arias moved to Mesa, Arizona. Wiki comes back with Cite error: A set of <ref> tags are missing the closing </ref>; see the help page. Can u advise where I put <ref>??

For example,'After they broke up in June of 2007, Jodi Arias moved to Mesa, Arizona. <ref>http://www.hlntv.com/article/2013/01/01/jodi-arias-travis-alexander-killer-romance<ref>

This right? Your help is greatly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SrGertrudeHarmon (talkcontribs) 17:50, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've put some nowiki tags in here to make this question & subsequent ones visible. Without the nowiki tags, the unterminated ref tags make further material unreadable. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:29, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No. You have to close with </ref>. <ref>http://www.hlntv.com/article/2013/01/01/jodi-arias-travis-alexander-killer-romance</ref> --  Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:32, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed it for you... User:Technical 13   ( C • M • View signature as intended) 18:36, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nacho Cano

[edit]

Nacho Cano

I am the personal assistant for Nacho Cano of Spanish pop music band Mecano. We are trying to update his article and have been thwarted several times because we lack references. Is there a way to reference things in his article that are from interviews I've had with him or are things that are not in published articles elsewhere? The article has gone through various phases of authenticity and we would both like to have a valid and verifiable article on Wikipedia. Any suggestions, comments or further questions would help me right now as I don't even totally know what I should be asking in order to accomplish this. Thank you for your help! Lcblock (talk) 18:33, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No. All your references must be published and verifiable. See WP:RS RudolfRed (talk) 18:43, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Text for a reference

[edit]

I have been working on a stub article about Stanley Spencer (aeronaut). An editor on the Humanities Refdesk very kindly found a reference for me, from an old magazine at the National Motor Museum and transcribed the text onto a Userpage - User:Tevildo/MotoringIllustrated. When I quote the reference in my article, is it possible to link to the text on the Userpage, and if so, what is the best way of doing so? Alansplodge (talk) 19:47, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First, understand that a link is not required for a published work; such a link is considered a convenience. You cannot use another Wikipedia page, especially a user page as a source. Since this particular work was published in the US before 1923, it is now in the public domain and can be transcribed to Wikisource and then linked. --  Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:05, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And to cite it you don't even need to link to the text. Just use the appropriate cite template, in this case {{Cite journal}}.--ukexpat (talk) 20:26, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok many thanks. I thought it would be useful to have a link to the text, as somebody trying to follow this up probably wouldn't want to visit a museum in rural England to read it. The Wikisource idea is a good one. Alansplodge (talk) 20:46, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Element Mobile

[edit]

Hello,

I recently posted a request for edit to Element Mobile's talk page but my request was denied with no explanation. I am wondering if someone can assist me in finding out why this was denied and what I can do to get my changes approved.

Thank you Akbemis (talk)

You put this question at the top of the page, where few people will read it and it will soon be archived. I have moved it to here. Maproom (talk) 20:01, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On March 7th, User:Fox Wilson replaced your {{request edit}} tag by {{request edit|declined}} {{Hidden|Edit request content| ... your request hidden here ... }}. He did not give a reason. This strikes me as unhelpful of him - rejecting a request often makes sense, but hiding it does not. I suggest you discuss it with him. Maproom (talk) 20:14, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see now why he denied your request. You wanted to downplay the company's failure to provide an adequate service, and rewrite the article in a more promotional way. He was right to deny it. But his use of {{Hidden}} still seems unhelpful. Maproom (talk) 20:27, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

April 1 page

[edit]

Hey! I saw your April 1 page. Have you been taken over by Conservapedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.251.70.90 (talk) 22:00, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's become traditional to have some fun here on April 1. There's an archive at Wikipedia:April Fools. No, we haven't been taken over. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:10, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Compassion

[edit]

From what I read from the history of this topic getting deleted. The correct answer to the question the OP asked, assuming that it is not spam, is that they should probably on Talk:Compassion and/or Talk:Sympathy.
