Fragmentation of Android devices

[edit]
Article(s)
Stagefright (bug)
Request
Please have a look at this picture, which is available from this web page – it's a very good high-level illustration of how the whole Android ecosystem is fragmented, which results in numerous negative implications for the platform as a whole. This illustration would be a very nice addition to the Stagefright (bug) article, and based on the content it depicts I'd say that we should have no copyright issues.
Thoughts? Of course, I'm here for all additional questions. Thank you in advance! — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 11:39, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
It seems that the image itself originates here. If it's a question of copyright and whether or not we can include it as-is, you might want to try the copyright pump at Commons as they usually have better insight into that kind of thing. If you want us to try and reproduce the image in a different way, then make that clearer in your request.  :) NikNaks talk - gallery 13:56, 8 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's a great find, thank you very much! You're right, I wasn't clear enough, :) and based on the original web page you've found I'd say that it might be somewhat easier to just create our own instance of that drawing. It seems to be an SVG embedded into HTML on the original web page, so we might be able to use that embedded SVG code to quickly create our separate SVG file? — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 14:13, 9 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thumb fails to render a simple .svg

[edit]
Article(s)
User:Justaxn/sandbox
100-year flood
Request

Please help me with image file https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0c/Passau_flood_history.svg It displays correctly via the complete link, but incorrectly in my sandbox either as thumb or full image. Two necessary horizontal lines disappear, and the text labels grow too large. In thumb, a background checkerboard appears.

In publishing the cited report, I used Excel 2008 for Mac to create a rather awkward graphic and merged the image with text as .pdf. Unable to save the image as .svg from Excel, I found and used freeware svg-edit to rebuild the image as I uploaded it. My graphics skillset is small. I have not uploaded the .xlsx but can if needed.

Suggestions? TIA Justaxn (talk) 20:16, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s)

I've cleaned up the file and the dashed lines now render correctly. The text labels are now rendered at the size they are declared in the file as well, so if you need to make them smaller (or larger), just open the SVG file in a text editor and look for the "font-size=" tags. The checkerboard in the thumbnail is because the background of the graph is transparent; this will not appear in the article and indeed doesn't appear on your sandbox. If you have any more questions or changes, feel free to ask. NikNaks talk - gallery 12:07, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for help and pointing me usefully. I tweaked it a bit more but am blocked from overwriting, so I uploaded in parallel to Passau_flood_history_clean.svg Please overwrite the latest Passau_flood_history.svg with Passau_flood_history_clean.svg and delete the latter. Thanks! Justaxn (talk) 19:12, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Standards of Jordan

[edit]

Request
Would anyone be able to re-construct the rays and white oval on the Royal Standard of the King of Jordan as according to the construction sheets available on FOTW? As a bonus, apparently the Crown Prince also has a standard. There's no construction sheet but if anybody likes a challenge I would be very thankful. Fry1989 eh? 19:57, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)

I've had a crack at improving it. I'm not 100% sure exactly how the rays joining the ellipse on the sides left and right are meant to work; whether the lengths given on the construction sheet (6 & 9) refer to the arc lengths or a straight line, and indeed whether that should impact on the shape of the ellipse. Unfortunately my attempts to calculate the arc length directly proved rather fruitless, but I'll keep at it. Let me know if there are obvious other problems/differences that need addressing. I'll have a crack at the Crown Prince's now. NikNaks talk - gallery 15:28, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if the crown is entirely accurate for the CP; if there's a better one available it might be worth swapping it out. Regardless, find a version in the gallery. NikNaks talk - gallery 17:09, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Found a Matlab script that I got to work, so the current upload is as accurate as I can get those rays (~3dp for the points on the ellipse and the ellipse's dimensions). I'm sure someone with more technical know-how might be able to get it to even higher accuracy, but it looks fine to me. NikNaks talk - gallery 19:32, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and so swift! Those look great :) Fry1989 eh? 20:02, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Fry1989: The only thing I'm not so sure about is the crown. From the FOTW page, it seems like the Royal Standard variously has a star, a white crown, a filled crown with an outline etc. Would it be worth trying to have copies of all these variations, or is that unimportant? There are also a good deal of historical variations but I'm not sure how useful they are. NikNaks talk - gallery 12:19, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@NikNaks: I've uploaded a version of the Crown Prince's crown, as displayed on his website, which may help with the Crown Prince's Royal Standard. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 15:20, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Swapped it in, thanks a lot!  :) NikNaks talk - gallery 15:33, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@NikNaks:, I'm not terribly picky, I'm just happy to have the flags redone. However if you have free time and want to do it, you can make the variants.
@Mliu92:, thank you for that new crown. Fry1989 eh? 16:01, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Out of boredom I have populated the Royal Standards of Jordan category with some variations from FOTW. NikNaks talk - gallery 11:25, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
