About the event

[edit]

Every day, the Art UK team uncovers fascinating stories about artworks and their creators, connecting with collections, volunteers and experts to bring a wealth of knowledge to the public. Art UK’s current Sculpture Project has highlighted to the gender imbalance of content on Wikipedia, with less than 18% of biographies on the English Wikipedia being about women. We aim to redress this by writing and expanding articles about the female creators behind some of Britain’s most interesting sculptures.

Join us in learning to edit and create content on Wikipedia, the world's most popular online research tool, under the direction of Wikimedia UK's Scotland Programme Coordinator, Dr Sara Thomas. You will gain techniques to improve content during and beyond the event, empowering you to continue as an active Wikipedia contributor.

This event will focus on female artists with sculptures represented on the Art UK website. A list of suggested artists will be sent to participants in advance. You are welcome to bring along your own suggestions and resources. Be inspired by work already happening with Wikipedia’s Women in Red campaign and the Encyclopedia of Courageous Women.

Our hosts are University of Glasgow Library, one of the oldest university libraries in Europe. You can check out some of their impressive collections on UofG Library twitter, and don’t forget their special collections on instagram!

Please note: you will need to bring your personal laptop to this event. Food and drinks will be provided.

This event is open to all levels of experience. Places are limited, please book by emailing sarah.harmon@artuk.org
