History

[edit]

The hymn "Viel Glück und viel Segen" has a short text in four lines, wishing happiness and blessing on all ways, including health and cheerfulness.[1] Other songs before the one by Werner Gneist [de] used similar wordings that the author may have known.[2]

The song is commonly sung as a round as a congratulation and blessing for birthdays and anniversaries.[1] It is printed in songbooks, including several for children, [1] as one the most popular birthday song in German.[2]
