Re:RfR

Hi Titoxd. I replied at RfR talk. I don't think the proposal is new, particularly, but a recycling of the old one. I think those (of you) who would see RfR have really got to tackle the problems in the poll. These range from the philosophical to the procedural. So re-proposing broadly the same procedure (in the rather half-thought-out way that is there at present) really doesn't make much difference, to me at least. Talrias seems determined to conjure a consensus out of that poll whichever way he can: he's now suggesting that by reforming the process to a currently-arbitrary degree allows the claiming of sufficient support from that poll which was on a proposal that none of the pollees can be said to have ever considered! RfR needs to think out of the box, in a big way. -Splashtalk 23:09, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Greetings, Titoxd. Can you keep an eye on Karameh? An anon who you dealt with earlier (201.6.93.73) removed valid material and links from that page and replaced it with a lengthy highly POV copyvio tract, and also deleted a warning about such copyvios from the talk page. I suspect that the same individual is responsible for almost identical copyvio tracts inserted previously. Since I am responsible for most of the current material, I wish to avoid the appearance of bias that might arise if I use my admin powers with respect to the situation. Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. Yes, everything was clear as water, thank you! I have one question, completely unrelated to what you've told me before. I know there are various logs recording my wiki activities (page moves, block log, et. al) and I was wondering if you knew of a centralized place where I could access them all.

Is the collateral damage really worth it?

Dear Titoxd (titanium oxide? :-D),

As an AOL member I am an involuntary user of whatever dynamic IP AOL in its wisdom assigns to me. As it happens, that IP currently seems to be 205.188.116.203, which was "autoblocked" under your signature. I discovered this when I tried to correct an error I made in Jaco Van Dormael, a page I recently created. I do appreciate that the problem of vandalism has to be dealt with in some way, but I am starting to get frustrated at the way administrators like yourself are dealing with it. This is not the first time I have been an innocent victim of autoblocking (what the blocking page calls "collateral damage"). In fact, it has happened to me three times in the last week (each time with a different IP). It's all very well to say that "Occasionally, users with dynamic IPs will be blocked accidentally." I would not call three times a week occasional. If my experience as an AOL user is typical (and I have no reason to believe otherwise), the extent of collateral damage must be massive, raising the question of whether this cure for vandalism isn't worse than the disease. I could just patiently wait for the block to expire (again), but I feel I should at least bring the larger problem to your attention in hopes that as an administrator, you might be able to suggest alternative ways of dealing with it. This is not just about me; if every earnest Wikipedia contributor who has the misfortune to be at the mercy of a dynamic IP gets blasted like this three times a week, I would call that a significant problem.

Oh, and a PS: As I can't correct my own mistake, I would appreciate if you could edit Jaco Van Dormael for me. I got the hierarchy of subheads the wrong way round; "Short films" and "Feature films" are supposed to be subheads of "Filmography" Vremya 09:20, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Update: After considerable further research I discovered this proposal and declared my support, as it sounds like just the sort of thing that might help to solve this problem. Sorry if you feel I've wasted your time, but at the time I had no idea who else to turn to Vremya 22:33, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Big changes to Flcelloguy's Tool

I found that if you change the name of the person, the contributions of both people become addded together. In fixing that (and, at the same time, implementing tons of things I'd been putting off), I implemented two new classes. The tool now works great for downloading, but I didn't re-implement parsing from saved files (and all that functionality is being moved to the new StatBundle class). It needs to parse the username from the file and then display it in the "username" field anyway. I'm still working on it, but if you're around, hop on IRC and message me (I'm not in any channels but I'm online), and I'll upload copies of everything. --AySz88^-^ 00:58, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: Tool error

I don't see any reason why it would crash at line 39 of Namespace.java, unless for some reason generics work differently for your compiler than mine....do you have 2.00b? --AySz88^-^ 14:17, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Okay, got it. :) I'm thinking about how the program should respond when there's no Internet connection, and it'd be bad for it to time out with the user just sitting there waiting for the program to start responding again. Okay, though if there's no Internet connection at all, that doesn't solve the really really long delay thing - but I guess we can solve that later. (Also, you don't seem to be getting my IRC messages :( ) --AySz88^-^ 05:36, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tixotd. Wikipedia started using the death toll from my blog a few months back without me even asking. Someone suggested using my blog as a source; they said, "I know it's a blog and that sounds bad, but it looks like he has backed his sources up pretty well." After some debate, Wikipedia's Hurricane Katrina entry started using my death toll. Since then, I have occasionally updated it with totals from my blog. Since my blog was already being used as a source by Wikipedia, I think that the controversy by you and the other source is a bit over the top.

Furthermore, although you guys think you are deleting my edit, the Hurricane Katrina piece is continuing to use my blog as a death toll source, as it has for months now. My sources for each state are are listed in each update of the death toll. In my most recent entry, which is being referenced on Kos, the source for each state (a newspaper article) is listed in a table at the end of the piece. You are free to check it out for yourself if you wish.

The controversial entries regarding Ohio, Kentucky and evacuees now have names and ages of those killed in Kentucky and Ohio, dates, locations and causes of their deaths , along with the titles, dates and authors of the newspaper articles referring to the incidents. There is also a reference to the title, date and author of the article that refers to the 57 evacuee deaths caused by Katrina. The rest of the total is not controversial, but there are links to current, valid, newspaper articles for all totals for those who wish to check them out. I have been keeping track of the Katrina death toll for months now and no one has challenged my methodology yet.

The toll is regularly updated and occasionally lowered if need be. Conflicting totals given in various news piece are weighed before I decide which one to use. Feel free to check out my data. The mainstream media has dropped the ball on this story and I picked it up.

Your attention to this article is greatly appreciated by the members of WP:PW. Is it possible to have this entry semi-protected so that only registered users can edit it? This article has been the target of more than a few nonsense edits, vandalism, and unsubstantiated information; the majority of it being added by unregistered users. - Chadbryant 03:12, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey I was glad to upload the Super Task Force Episode List. I will now be updating this as new Titles are confirmed. Also I can help update that Power Rangers Episodes Page if you want for dates. I'm known as Kochanski on this Site and if you guys ever need extra help making Episode List Pages or something I can. {Kochanski}

Thanks for your sensible and well-explained response. Glad you're not spending any time on any senseless "homework" or other such time-wasters. I suppose I'll relist it, just so nobody can complain it was deleted by secretive cabalistic decree. Friday (talk) 15:02, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

I've replied on the talk page. Oh, and I apologize for not getting more done on the help page; I've been busy (again) and haven't had a chance to do much over the past few weeks, but I'll get to it soon (hopefully). Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 00:20, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Dang it! :)

You beat me on Triumph by about a minute. :) I am usually the most against protecting the FA for even a minute, but I wanted to ward off the penis vandal if possible. Figure people seeing that is worse than it being protected for 15-20 minutes. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 02:13, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thank you!
