Need help with template editing

[edit]

Sod25 I ran into your edit request today and I noticed we both submitted a protected-template edit request for similar parameters implementation aka changes. I tried fixing the issue, but did not know how. Could you be so kind enough to land me a hand? Qwerty284651 (talk) 04:52, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Athens Open infobox

[edit]

Hi, nice work on updating the tournament event infoboxes. You are correct that the main name parameter in the tournament event infobox seems to determine the destination of the before and after links. However, this is different from the behavior on the level of the tournament itself. For example, at 1988 Athens Open the before and after links work fine despite the fact that the main name (ATP Athens Open) is different. Before we update all these tournament event infoboxes it would be a good idea to first check if the functionality of the event infoboxes in this regard can be made the same as that of the tournament infoboxes. That would save a lot of updating and it would be more logical and intuitive if both levels function the same.--Wolbo (talk) 11:43, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wolbo That's a good point, we should make the behavior consistent between the templates. I've made the necessary change to the relevant sandbox to make it so that main_name doesn't override the default before/after_name params. I've also made edits to the other related template so that they fully support wheelchair tennis events and so Template:Infobox Wheelchair tennis at multi sports events can be replaced by Template:Infobox tennis tournament year, as well as various other improvements. I don't have the template editor privileges to make these changes myself, but I see that you do. If you could please copy the code from the following sandboxes to their respective main templates pages that would be great:

Hi, looks like you are more proficient with these templates than I am. I do have template editor privileges but only really use that for the tournament color template which is not technical at all. Think it would be a good idea for you to request template editor privileges, would be handy to have someone with those skills in the tennis project.--Wolbo (talk) 22:28, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wolbo, thanks for the suggestion but I unfortunately don't come close to meeting the requirements for the user right (1 year, 250 template edits, ++). The changes have all been tested, so a simple copy-paste over from the sandboxes would do the trick if you should be willing to do that. The improvements include the addition of some new tracking categories to find issues with the templates - I could also add one for Template:Infobox tennis tournament year/color to find tournaments without a color yet specified if that would be useful to you. Sod25 (talk) 11:41, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wolbo, any chance you could implement these changes? There are some tournaments I'd like to update that require the new features. Sod25 (talk) 14:56, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, will try this weekend.--Wolbo (talk) 15:00, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A tracking category to find tournaments without a color would be useful. Thanks.--Wolbo (talk) 15:39, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, the three templates and the module have been updated. Was a simple copy & paste but to be safe can you check them again to make sure all has gone well?--Wolbo (talk) 16:02, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wolbo, thanks - all has gone well, but there are some further improvements to make now that I've seen the effects of the changes across all tournaments + the color tracking cat to add. If you could please repeat the process with the 3 templates & module that would be much appreciated. (p.s. I've nominated the templates that have been substituted for deletion here). Sod25 (talk) 21:53, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done.--Wolbo (talk) 22:49, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again, everything is working as intended now. For your interest, here are the details of all the tracking categories:

These should make the upkeep of all the infoboxes across Wikipedia much more efficient. Sod25 (talk) 07:02, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wolbo there are some more changes to these templates. If you have the time to transfer the changes once more that would be appreciated. Sod25 (talk) 13:59, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done.--Wolbo (talk) 14:07, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wolbo, thanks - there are a couple more changes to the module and Infobox tennis tournament year. If you could please copy them across, that'd be great (and sorry for the repeated requests). Sod25 (talk) 15:21, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done.--Wolbo (talk) 22:35, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Wolbo. If you could please do one last transfer for all four sandboxes to add qualifying options and remove non-article pages from the tracking categories, then we should be all done and all these can be deleted. Sod25 (talk) 11:54, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Will wait a few days to make sure that these are really the final updates and then will do a last transfer.--Wolbo (talk) 15:02, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wolbo, fair enough, the last transfer is ready now. I appreciate your having helped me with this. Sod25 (talk) 19:41, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Templates and module have been updated.--Wolbo (talk) 20:18, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ranking article

[edit]

Sod25, could you please return that section which you removed from my sandbox on 1913-1967? I worked hard to restore those citations there in that copy, and now those citations have been removed and lost again. We should keep a copy of those citations intact somewhere so that they could be easily recovered. I protest at having to do this work several times over again because some editors obliterate the work. I was keeping this copy intact in my sandbox because I suspected that this might happen.Tennisedu (talk) 13:33, 4 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Tennisedu, nothing is lost on Wikipedia - you can always click the timestamp of the edit before mine in the page history, then click edit source and copy-paste the source text back into the current version of the draft, so don't worry about having to re-do your version with citations if we need it again. However, a decision has to be made about where the citations should be. I'll add a comment at User talk:Wolbo/sandbox7 so the discussion doesn't become more fragmented than it already is.
