Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School

[edit]

All of my edits on that page were deleted, even though all were correct and sourced apart from the one you highlighted. Furthermore, I deleted several unsourced and clearly biased comments which have since been rewritten. Surely this is contrary to the free nature and ethos of Wikipedia?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.134.165.229 (talkcontribs)

Hi. Regarding passages which you deleted which have been rewritten, I've had a look through your contribs, and I'm afraid I can't see what you're referring to. The only edits I can find in which you deleted something are here and here. In neither case has the deleted text been rewritten. Could you point to what you mean? | Also, here you have readded your statement that the ISC claims the school teaches Greek when it does not; this is incorrect: Although it is not an timetabled subject, Mr. Whiteman nevertheless teaches it after school to people who are going on to study Classics. Bear in mind that though I cannot add that fact to the article, since I have no verifiable source for it, that does not mean that it is acceptable for an incorrect (and equally unsourced) statement (i.e. "the school does not teach Greek") to remain in the article. A statement such as "Doubts have also been cast over the legitimacy of the report" is also going to need a verifiable source. -- simxp (talk) 20:51, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Punchdrunk

[edit]

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Punchdrunk, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. TheRingess (talk) 15:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hello, i have come from Linux versus Windows talk page. You replied to my comment.

I have a question regarding Linux: Nobody gets paid to write code for the GNU and Linux, how practical is that? i mean nobody can stay with Linux to earn. Even Linus Torvald gets paid to maintain the kernel therefore that keeps his interest alive. I read that in his latest interview posted at Slashdot. I only want to clarify that when there is no return for doing something then what are the implications in terms of its future?

I figured this when i myself used Linux and found that it lacked the consistency that Windows provides in every department of operating system especially GUI, and i thought that because there is no incentive for writing GUI therefore Linux has no future or it will take very long for it to evolve as compared to Windows. User Account Control and CPULock

[edit]

If they can talk about, "in a manner very similar to that seen in Ubuntu Linux. In this way, only applications that the user trusts receive higher privileges, and malware is kept from receiving the privileges necessary to wreak havoc on the operating system." Exactly how should I have written the below? Please edit it according to what you think best, but the fact of thre matter is, I did make something just like UAC, but in my opinion, better. The only links I gave were that of 1, a funny video made by MAC about UAC, and 2. a video proving mine was out first. If I had a cabillion dollard to sue MS for using a proccess I patend, I would, all I am asking for is reconition, that I earned.

Please edit the below according to what you think best.

In the year 2001, Dean Biddle also created something like UAC.

Here is a video of him talking about it before Visa was released

His program, CPULOCK, overlaps guest privileges upon the areas that malware attempt to write to, thus blocking any new or unknown and even known malware. The main differance between his program and UAC is his does not annoy the user with constant questions This MAC AD says it best

If the user has a problem installing software, the user needs to "unlock" before installing. He thinks it is safer than UAC because it has a password prompt before it "unlocks" the computer.

CPULOCK works on the following older operating systems versions; Windows XP, Windows 2003 and Windows 2000. With UAC being the main reason Vista is more secure than the older OS versions, CPULOCK can bring Vista type of security to older OS versions.

Some prefer CPULOCK to UAC because it seems to be less annoying and more secure.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:NTPermissions.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:NTPermissions.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 20:41, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Consolas

[edit]

Thanks for removing my post to Consolas, Simxp. I was about to delete it myself.

The problem is that Consolas doesn't have any box-drawing characters defined (at least according to other websites), so Internet Explorer is substituting from other fonts. The result is that Consolas is severely limited in its monospace usefulness. It would be helpful if the Consolas page displayed the entire 713 glyph Consolas character set.

Thanks again for deleting my editing. I will investigate more thoroughly before posting next time.

[edit]

Hey, Back on september 16th 2007 you posted a question on the talk page of my essay "A Source of Goodness, Not Evil."

You asked, and i quote, "From the essay: “Negroes are inherently inferior to white people.” ... that quote can be found in an older edition of Encyclopedia Britannica [1]. Do you have a reference for that isn't password protected (or else, could you include the username and password needed to access it inside the ref tag)? I (and, I'm sure, many other people) would be interested to see that quote in context."

I'm sorry that i've been away from my computer for a while, but i thought that i would answer your question, as it is valid. I found that in a article on the PBS website (http://www.pbs.org/teachers/learning.now/2007/02/wikipedia_receives_a_citation_1.html). In that article they discuss the quote.

Thank you for taking the time to read my essay, and to comment. --Kiwiboy121 (talk) 03:43, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, intuitive is not the right word. Not sure how to express it. Keely (whom I knew at the time) had the idea for using the color subpixels. His implementation was not based on a scientific signal-processing analysis of the problem, he just wrote some code and realized that it had to do some smoothing. I don't believe he had any training at all in the technical issues. DonPMitchell (talk) 20:28, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Linux distributions article

[edit]

Hello. This is regarding your recent "regular maintenance" edit on the list of Linux distributions article. It would be extremely beneficial for editors if the article clearly mentioned that the list is for "notable" distributions only, i.e. distributions which have their own articles on Wikipedia. I spent a considerable amount of time expanding the list, only to find out later from your edit that distributions without their own articles are not qualified for inclusion in the list. It would save editors a lot of hassle if it is mentioned in the list's article itself that only the distributions included in Wikipedia can make the list. Thanks. --CoolingGibbon (talk) 17:00, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I appreciate the point, and apologise for the time you've spent; but as far as I can see, the list does say so, right at the beginning: "This page provides general information about notable Linux distributions". "Notable", in the context of Wikipedia, refers to Wikipedia:Notability, which sets out the criteria for "whether or not a topic merits its own article". So a Linux distribution is "notable" iff it has its own article. (As a matter of fact, in the case of Wikipedia lists, even if it doesn't explicitely say that it is a list of "notable" X, it almost always is. E.g. List of atheists (surnames A to B) is a list of people with Wikipedia articles who are also atheists; not a list of all atheists; it would quickly get ridiculously large and unmaintainable otherwise. For more examples, see Comparison of video codecs, Comparison of text editors, List of people born at sea, etc.) -- simxp (talk) 13:38, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, and thanks for clearing that up. Just in case though, would it be a good idea to put a phrase in the article mentioning that "notable" actually refers to distributions with their own articles? That way, it would be easier for editors perhaps? --CoolingGibbon (talk) 05:14, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a consensus on Talk:Ubuntu. Why have you edited in opposition to it? Yworo (talk) 01:41, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I initially switched it to the disambiguation on the basis of seeing it bounce between the philosophy and the OS all afternoon on my watchlist. As I said on the talk page, the consensus reached (of the philosophy) has little chance of lasting a full day; the fans of the OS are many and legion. And, to be fair to them, the decision that the philosophy was the primary meaning appeared to have been reached on the basis of incorrect policy: i.e. the basis that it is the 'original' meaning, which is irrelevent; there is only a primary meaning if that meaning is "much more used" than any other meaning. But you're right, I should have edited the talk page *before* making the change, rather than the other way round; apologies. -- simxp (talk) 01:52, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Much more used where? Although the language of this Wikipedia is English, it is supposed to reflect a worldwide view. How do you know that the OS is the most used meaning in Southern Africa? You don't, and you don't know for sure which meaning is more used. Also, in cases of cultural appropriation of a word, especially when the word is of religious or spiritual significance, bypassing the original meaning to appear to make the appropriation primary could be considered offensive to those who hold or respect the philosophy... Southern Africa is a pretty big and populous place. Yworo (talk) 01:56, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"How do [I] know that the OS is the most used meaning in Southern Africa?" An odd question to ask. If I had changed the page to point to the OS as the primary meaning, challenging me to prove that it is indeed the most used meaning would be appropriate. Since I didn't do anything of the sort, it is bizarre. As you correctly say, it is not clear that one meaning is universally "much more used" than any of the others; in which case Wikipedia policy is "use the diambiguation page", not "let Yworo pick a meaning". (Also, are you seriously suggesting not only that a significant number of people would find a disambiguation page offensive, but that we should make editing decisions based on that?) -- simxp (talk) 02:10, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm suggesting that having some sensitivity and not having a "First World" view of the matter would be a good thing. Yworo (talk) 02:18, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You were right to inform the user User:Krocht31 of the conversation there. But the user had an unfortunate response; to blank the section. While I reverted it, I feel like I should now add a warning to the user's Talk page. Is a uw-vand1 warning template appropriate, or do you know of a better template given the situation? Thanks. —Aladdin Sane (talk) 01:17, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A more appropriate template would be Template:Uw-tpv1 or Template:Uw-tpv2. But, to be honest, I was planning to just leave it for now and wait and see if s/he reposts the Fortress text: I thought it might be possible that s/he didn't actually realise that the discussion on the talk page existed and, once I pointed it out, realised what had been happening and was embarrassed, and the deleting was just an instinctive response to that and a way to draw a line in the sand. Of course, if the spam does get reposted, go nuts. (Or do so anyway: naturally you're free to do whatever you want, the above was just what I was going to do). -- simxp (talk) 01:34, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I knew I had seen a better template while RTFM. Your actions in the matter have been honorable and cool-headed, I appreciate your manor.
