[edit]
Project News
  • Tag & Assess 2008, an assessment drive initiated by the assessment department began on June 7, 2008 and will be running until July 2008. Many Wikipedians have started contributing to this mammoth task. This housekeeping activity will help manage articles in better way. You can also get involved!
  • Bot Assisted Assessment was successfully done using Bot0612 in May 2008. 1744 articles (18.5%) of all India unassessed articles were marked if they had been assessed by some other project.
  • What's Featured and Good?
  • IPL was hot on Wikipedia too!!! During the tournament, the article was among the most frequently edited articles. It is currently the only Indian article in top 100, occupying 58th spot.
  • Do you know of an article that is currently underrated? If so, please nominate the article at the Assessment Department's request for assessment. This will allow our project to get a better idea of the quality of our articles.

Could you take a look at the new Ancient Near East portal? I'd like to submit it for a Featured Portal review when I find/improve a few more articles for the "selected article" section, and would welcome any feedback you could offer at this time.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:NewYorkGiants 1000.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:NewYorkGiants 1000.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:25, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are receiving this message because you are listed as the protecting admin for Islam in the United States. The page has been semiprotected for longer than 2 months without an expiry date set. Because Wikipedia relies on contributers to make the encyclopedia, I'm asking you to review your decision and either

  • Unprotect the page if protection is no longer needed, or
  • set a reasonable expiry date for the protection instead of leaving it on forever

I hope that you will do one of the two in order to reduce the backlog of pages that have been semiprotected for very long period of time. Thank you. -Royalguard11(T) 19:41, 6 August 2008 (UTC) Why am I receiving this message?[reply]

Couple of blocking questions

[edit]

Two questions, related to User:-73hww:

  • Would you be willing to leave an indef-block notice on talk pages please? I left a warning on the talk page nearly an hour after you made the block, since there wasn't a notice.
  • About the user him/herself: was s/he a new user, or had s/he been violating policy for a good while?

Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 13:58, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Nyttend, I believe the contributions log and the timestamps within them are ample indication of whether your warning is timely or not. However, I'll try to be more disciplined. The user is a known troll with sockpuppets engaged in harassment of a few other users. I can't really give you anymore info because I've just returned from quite a long break :) Cheers, ~ Riana 14:00, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request Suggestions

[edit]

I looked you up from Wikiproject India, in which I have enlisted myself. I have been spending some time bringing this article up to par and I have done a lot of work today. Would you take a look into the article and suggest the ways in which it can be expanded (I have a list of mathematical, medical, and engineering related innovations but am really lacking in the machines, astronomy, physics etc. fields) and made better? I want to bring it up to the level of this article and then work on the Science and technology in ancient India (rename it 'History of science and technology in India') article and then perhaps add a section like this one in the India article.

Thanks in advance, South Block (talk) 09:10, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bell the cat

[edit]

As the original author of that article, I completely agree. I deliberately let it go when I saw it on my watchlist out of the sheer wonderfulness of that sentence. JKBrooks85 (talk) 03:17, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I saw that you are a portal peer review volunteer. I have worked much for the improvement of my portal, but some concerns may remain:

  • Is the image at the top of the page useful and aesthetic, or should I remove or replace it ?
  • Problem with the selected biography: I contented myself with writing a short sentence as an introduction for each personality. Then I wrote the beginning of the biography, then put a link "more..." to the complete article. Is it approriate ?
  • Selected images are not of the same size. Is it really a problem ? It should be noted that free images for comics are very rare.
  • Is the presentation of the news correct ? I did not specified the exact date of each event, only the month, because I do not know it.
  • If you have any other recommendations about other aspects of the portal, do not hesitate ! It MUST become a featured portal ! Thanks. (Please reply here).--Pah777 (talk) 22:02, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

G'day Wikimedian :-)

[edit]

Whilst it's quite likely you'll have heard this news on the grapevine, in your email inbox, or even in person - I thought that it was sufficiently exciting to warrant giving each of you a 'new messages' orange bar! This particular orange bar has been brought to you to let you know that Wikimedia Australia is now open for members!

I'm not on the committee or anything, and that's where the credit is due in getting everything to this point, but I think it would be absolutely fantastic for folks who wish to support the australian wiki community, to go ahead and sign up - we're quite likely to be the world's fatest growing chapter at the moment! Join Us :-)

Here's a little more about membership, and the mailing list in particular is well worth signing up to as well, and is a good forum to get answers to any questions answered, or to share any ideas. I've dropped these notes in under my own steam, and you've received one because you're on this list - feel free to ask me any questions, or anything - I can certainly point you in the right direction :-) cheers all, Privatemusings (talk) 04:05, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Riana, I'm a fairly new contributor here. Actually I put up some biographies a couple of years back but then didn't do anything for awhile. I'm looking at Steve Glickman, Julius Awafong, and the whole VoteSizing concept/movement/whatever. I've found that there are a number of people talking about this, and that there is a sound philosophical and scientific basis. I'm not sure I exactly agree with them that it will work but I think it has become notable as best I understand the term. Bottom line: I've put up bios for Glickman and Awafong and I'm collecting information pursuant to putting up a page on vote sizing. It will be impartial and referenced. This note is a courtesy to you and I think fulfills the guidelines for putting a page back up. Please contact me--talk page or whatever--to provide any comments you may have." For what is worth, Riana seems to have had an internal conflict in the past month - she told me that more or less she considers Wikipedia as a time-sucker activity, and that it's controlled by vandals, annoying nerds, and assholes who think they're saving the world.
Perhaps most of these statements are true... see this explanation from the Penny Arcade website. Baby-sitting the net (e.g. "reverting vandalism" hours a day) is not fun... ZaknafeinDoUrden (talk) 21:43, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
