Charnockite

[edit]

I think the following portion of text in the trivia section could be removed.

The photographer, who has uploaded the photo on flickr, [1] has given a succinct text explaining the rock and mineral components of the statue thus:

the green jacket is nephrite Jade (originally a 980 kg (2,160.5 lb) block from the Yukon, Canada); the red cuffs and collar are made of Thulite from Norway; the trousers are Larvikite from the western shores of Oslo Fjord in Norway; the head and hands are in porcelain; the shoes and socks are black charnockite granite from Bangalore, South India. Finally, Oscar is seated in a 35 tonne boulder of quartz from the Wicklow Mountains, Ireland. Wonderful as it is, it's pretty creepy...

It is the personal, self-published opinion of the uploader and could not be considered appropriate enough to be mentioned here. As for the rest of the article, it does look good. I confess my ignorance about geology and rocks and I don't think I am competent enough to analyze that portion. By the way, I am extremely sorry for having forgotten about that message you posted in my talkpage sometime back. I do feel bad about it as St Thomas Mount is quite near and am not able to comprehend how I had missed it altogether.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 03:58, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tell me once you had moved the article into Wikipedia mainspace. It will also be great if you indicate if you have any specific preferences about the DYK hook.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 04:00, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have found more references in published books though not as clearly mentioned as in the flicker photo caption. There is also a book on Geology of the Statue but the text is not digitized and displayed. The following are the references.

“In the park opposite this house is a statue of Oscar Wilde gloriously decoarted with semi-precious stones – blue pearl granite trousers, jacket of jade, shoes of granite –reclining on a white quartz rock and holding a green carnation to his breast ( and nicknamed by the populace as ‘the quare in the square’ or the ‘queer with the sneer’- look at his expression…”. [2].The shoes and the socks are said to be of Charncokite from India. From wiki article on Oscar Wilde - "In Merrion Square, inside the north west corner gateway, there is a statue of Oscar Wilde composed of different coloured stone, sitting on a large granite boulder. This has been nicknamed The Queer with the Leer, The Fag on the Crag or The Quare in the Square ("quare" being a dialectal Irish pronunciation of queer)" [3] Can we not combine all the three references and add a suitable text.--Nvvchar (talk) 08:02, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you can combine all the three references and add a text. There is no problem if the book is not digitized. You can add it as an offline reference and provide citations. Just tell me when your article is ready and I'll nominate it.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 11:33, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have posted the article. I suggest the following hooks for the DYK nomination, which you pl consider amd modify as necessary, to nominate it DYK page.Thanks--Nvvchar (talk) 15:13, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

---that Charnockite, St. Thomas Mount in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is a profuse exposure of quartz-feldspar-hypersthene rock, with occurrence of two pyroxene facies metamorphism?

Alt:--- that the name Charnockite, St. Thomas Mount in Chennai originated from use of rocks quarried from a central band in the St.Thomas Mount as tombstone of Job Charnock, the founder of Kolkata in 1679?

I've nominated the ALT hook that you've suggested with slight modifications. The hook is present here. Do have a look at it and tell whether it's okay or not. Thanks-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 15:26, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the nomination. The article it titled Charnockite, St. Thomas Mount and not Charnockite (there is s seperate older article on Charnockite); Hence the full title has to be bolded by removing the 'in' and introducing a comma instead. Kindly change the bolding.--Nvvchar (talk) 23:57, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No change required. One again thanks for the nomination.--Nvvchar (talk) 01:20, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You have done a fine job on the articles that you have evaluated to DYK. They deserve a better rating. I was wondering if a better infobox can be found for the this article and the above one. --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:47, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, better Infobox has been found and replaced in both articles.--Nvvchar (talk) 09:49, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bengaluru Pete

[edit]

Hi Nvvchar, I chanced upon your article Bengaluru Pete today and felt compelled to stop by your profile and thank you for writing such an informative article. It is very educational for people like me that were born in the city but never got an opportunity to live there long enough to appreciate its history. Thanks again! Would it be possible for you to create an article on A. B. Shetty who was Health Minister in C. Rajagopalachari's 1952 ministry? I am not able to find enough info on him.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 10:28, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi, Ravichander,

I find that you have completed your 100 DYKs. Congrats. I am currently concentrating on articles on North East India. Any way, writing biographical articles is definitely not my cup of tea. --Nvvchar (talk) 12:49, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, I havent completedmy 100th DYK. My current count in 98. 2 DYKs are still waiting in the queue. There are another 3 or 4 articles which I could nominate as of now.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 02:46, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nvvchar,

I just saw this, and just wanted to say thanks very much for your work on this article. I'm looking forward to reading your reworked version. :) Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 08:50, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nvv,
Yes, I'm glad to help with some of the problems with the article. :) It's quite nice to see your enthusiasm; you obviously put a lot of work into the article. The Wikipedia Manual of Style asks that authors use italics on generic an specific names. That means all dinosaur names appear in italics: Rajasaurus instead of The Rajasaurus. We also try to source our work to peer-reviewed papers instead of newspapers, when possible: local news editors often don't know enough about science to use their work extensively in a Wikipedia article. Also, don't forget the difference between a genus and a species: anything that ends in a -saurus is a genus; Tyrannosaurus is a genus. Tyrannosaurus rex is a species. Take care, Firsfron of Ronchester 17:04, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the editing.I am now more educated by the finer issues related to the Rajasaurus.--Nvvchar (talk) 00:21, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nvv,
Thanks for your note on my talk page, and all of your hard work on the article. I added a few links to the bottom of the page, and the article, which was 3,421 bytes, is now 17,121 bytes... still five times larger. It shouldn't be a problem to get this to DYK (I've suggested an alternate hook, BTW, so that it avoids the word 'species'). I want to thank you for your enthusiasm editing on this topic; while there were a few errors, it's nice to see someone take an interest in an Indian dinosaur, and hopefully this will encourage Indians in the Wikicommunity.
Regarding the picture of the sculpture: yes, please take one (or several). India apparently has a liberal law of panorama[1], meaning it should be ok to upload your photos of sculptures to Commons. A picture of the model would make the article even better. If you are interested in contributing more to English Wikipedia's dinosaur articles (since there are 28 other articles in Category:Dinosaurs of India and Madagascar), you should probably join WikiProject Dinosaurs, as the other members can get you started with links to peer-reviewed papers and other nice sources for articles. And if not, it was a pleasure working with someone willing to work with other editors in creating this article.
Again, thanks for your efforts. Best, Firsfron of Ronchester 08:08, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I would love to join WikiProject Dinosaurs, since I am most of the time working with geologists as part of my professional work in water resources projects in the country. Is there a qualifying requirement? Thanks for suggesting an alternate hook for the DYK. I will be in touch with you for any addtional requirements on the subject of Dinosaurs. Thank you once again. --Nvvchar (talk) 08:19, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There's no requirement; just be sure to read the project page so that you get an idea of how the project formats their pages. And feel free to contact any of the active members for help, additional references, etc. Firsfron of Ronchester 08:25, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

pointer -> a) is not conversion of list -> prose. There still is a list. Write in para format, without any list. --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:27, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that Phumdi has too many links and violated WP:OVERLINK. Please read WP:OVERLINK. I hve tried to eliminate as many links as I felt were irrevalnt or common English like soil, farm, fish, reptile etc. Also, I have conerted 2 small lists into prose, left the longer ones for you. :) Continue your good work. --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:47, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
