Does this seem a right edit to you (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jos%C3%A9_Bosingwa&diff=980509286&oldid=978747445)? Second time i had to revert it. Unencyclopedical as it comes (could be a goof or a practical joke on his teammates, could be unintentional), seems to have no place here; if it does have, just say the word and i'll stop with my actions.

Attentively, sorry for any (possible) inconvenience --Quite A Character (talk) 05:40, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

I wouldn't include that either, and the source is questionable at best. Mattythewhite (talk) 09:48, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Map edits

I noticed you'd been editing maps like 2019–20 National League#National League South adding in extra text, that had been carefully omitted to make the maps more readable. Now they are less readable, and there's all sorts of overlapping text. I'm wondering what the objective is, and if you'll be cleaning the text up to make it readable again? Nfitz (talk) 21:38, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

I was changing club names across certain articles that for whatever reason were incorrectly displayed. Regarding the map, they are indeed less readable, although using incomplete club names isn't exactly ideal either. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:44, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
How is using the incomplete club name not ideal on the map, when there's no ambiguity? Surely using only part of the name is better than making the map completely unreadable. When are you going to fix or revert these map edits that are now displaying incorrectly? Nfitz (talk) 15:53, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
@Nfitz: I've started a discussion at WT:FOOTY to seek more ideas on how to proceed. If it becomes clear that shortening the clubs names is the best option I'm quite happy to go through them. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:39, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Édouard Mendy

Is there something wrong with it? Why you always complaining? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BPL2007 (talkcontribs) 02:45, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

It's not preferable to use the '(s)' when the footnote refers *only* to multiple appearances or a single appearance; 'Appearances' or 'Appearance' would be more accurate.
I wouldn't call it complaining, I'm just highlighting something that could be improved. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:07, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Troublesome user afoot? At least in Tomás Mejías and Juan Cámara, in spite of refs sourcing their height, changes content without one word in summary, amongst other things.

Warned for adding unsourced content. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:24, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

York City kits

Have a look at Historical Football Kits. REDMAN 2019 (talk) 11:28, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

That's great, but it should be cited in the article somewhere. Mattythewhite (talk) 11:34, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
I haven't come across football kits in infoboxs that have citations so I just put it in. (sorry about how long it took me to respond) REDMAN 2019 (talk) 12:34, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
Don't worry about that, look how long it's taken me to get back to you! You're right that they don't tend to be sourced, not least because there isn't an obvious place to put a citation. I tend to cite them through a subheading in the references section, like here. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:30, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Top scorers (again again!)

Hi Matty, the project continues, and I'm now down to the last half-dozen or so second tier play-off articles to go. All the others are now either GA or FA. Next up I have 1996 and 1994 to do, and since Soccerbase records seem to start with the 1996/97 season, I come here, cap in hand, begging for the top scorers for each team in each of those playoffs, say the top two or three in each? I owe you a couple already, but if you could help, I'd be very much obliged. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 12:32, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

@The Rambling Man:, Okay, seeing as you begged so nicely. I'll try and get them to you by the end of the weekend. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:17, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
That would be super, thanks. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 15:18, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

YAY. Cheers Matty, this is much appreciated. Hey, not far away from getting every "second division" play-off final to GA or beyond. And your help has been invaluable. What a treat. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 22:51, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Deputy Leader of the Opposition

Hi, I saw you reverted my addition of the office of ‘Deputy Leader of the Opposition’ in Angela Rayner’s article - I only added it as it’s saying she’s holding the office on her UK Parliament page: https://members.parliament.uk/member/4356/career - and that’s an official source. Could you clarify why you reverted? Ciaran.london (talk) 12:40, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

I wasn't aware of that being included on the Parliament site. If it is to be included, I would encourage that it also be included in the prose of the article with a source. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:33, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Ahh ok - I’ll re-add it now. 👌🏻 Ciaran.london (talk) 17:14, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Blank lines before stub tags

Hi Matty. I just saw you removed a blank line before the stub tag at Denzel_Dumfries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Stub_sorting#General_rules suggests two lines: "Two blank lines should be left between the first stub tag and whatever precedes it." What do you think? Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 18:45, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Is there any explanation as to why? It doesn't seem clear to me why that would be of any benefit. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:01, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
I haven't come across one. Maybe it's so that the tags aren't as easy visible to the average reader? I don't know. Robby.is.on (talk) 19:20, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Honours subsections

Hi, why are you removing the subsections in player honours, such as at Davide Frattesi? The MOS uses subsections. Nehme1499 (talk) 15:08, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Because they're redundant. The MoS also encourages us to include achievements (i.e. not honours) like performances and records, so I'm not sure how much stock I'd place in it. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:15, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
Where would you include performances and records, if not under honours? Nehme1499 (talk) 16:10, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
I personally don't think I'd include include them, as they're informal achievements rather than formal honours. But if they were included, I'd put them in a separate Achievements section. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:58, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
I mean, these are all personal preferences of yours. Isn't it better to discuss this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Players, so we could find consensus? Nehme1499 (talk) 17:09, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
Yes, although as I recall there wasn't a clear consensus for including them in the first place. And in practice, very few articles include such details. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:13, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Removal of description from page

Hello, Mr. Matty. I deleted the description from the page Hakim Ziyech because I thought that the description provided from Wikidata was enough to define it. Now, I changed the description from association football player to Moroccan footballer, because the players are commonly nowadays referred as footballers. And I had also an aim to help new people who don't know very much about football find out the nationality quickly. Have a nice weekend, sir. Zwnisthegreek 01:31, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Bob Thompson (footballer, born September 1890), who is Robert Thompson on List of York City F.C. players (1–24 appearances). I took his York City apps and book general ref (Batters) from that list, but if you could kindly add a page number to ref#35 if you get a minute, it'd be much appreciated. Reliable sources for Dennis Bergkamp

"Hello, I'm Mattythewhite. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Dennis Bergkamp, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Hi Mattythewhite, this is not serious, this is exactly what you had to remove, you could just add a source. Young children also know this, namely that Bergkamp won the 1998 FA Cup because he was Arsenal's most important player for the 1997-98 season in all competitions, including the FA Cup! He has 7 appearances (and 3 goals) from all 9 games for Arsenal in this tournament. He misses the final because he has a red card for the match with West Ham. Even now I saw that it is described in his wikipedia page :))) it also says that he won 4 FA Cup, but you removed exactly the one in 1998, where he had the most participations, compared with the other 3 FA Cup: 2002 FA Cup - 6 app. 3 goals, 2003 FA Cup - 4 app. 2 goals, 2005 FA Cup - 4 app. So add again the 1998 FA Cup to his honors! Btw he is 1.88m tall, you can also add in the individual awards that during the Premier League season 1998-99 he was a top assist provider in the Premier League with 13 assists.

Here are some sources: Excerpt from the article on the official website of Arsenal, where you can read that he won the 1998 FA Cup and received a medal for it: "And so it was that under the tutelage of Wenger, Bergkamp redefined football in England's top division. His textbook technique, physical prowess and second-nature for picking out the killer pass made him the ultimate symbol of fantasy football. Indeed when Arsenal usurped Manchester United as the country's best team in 1998, Bergkamp, too, succeeded Eric Cantona as the Premier League's brightest beacon of European excellence. That Double season Arsenal’s No 10 was outstanding and his reward at the end of the campaign was both major Player of the Year awards to go with his championship and FA Cup medals. ” https://www.arsenal.com/history/greatest-players-no-2.-dennis-bergkand https://www.arsenal.com/news/features/dennis-bergkamp

Hi, I did include a citation: Critchley, Mark (17 February 2017). "Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke denied entry to the United States". The Independent. Retrieved 7 December 2020. In this article there is an example of the misreporting (from Sky) and also a statement that it was not because of the Trump Ban bue due to the Obama administration 2016 law. There are more citations I could include, for example "Yorke's incident was unrelated to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent executive order temporarily barring citizens from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the country." from https://www.espn.co.uk/football/manchester-united/story/3063000/dwight-yorke-denied-travel-through-us-because-of-iranian-stamp-on-passport. The original page referenced an article in the Telegraph. If the Telegraph is a reliable source then surely so is the Independent? Can you please explain how I have not included a reliable source for my two statements than the ban was due to the 2016 Obama administration law, and that misreporting took place and claimed it was due to the Trump Ban? DefundBBC (talk) 22:55, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

As far as I could see, the Independent article made no mention of the Obama law. But I've removed the passage altogether anyway as it isn't particularly notable. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:57, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
No, the Telegraph article did - "However, on this occasion Yorke appears to have been caught by a regulation introduced by the OBama administration". Thanks for removing the original statement, which was untrueDefundBBC (talk) 06:57, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

Nope, could not find anything at your "place", nor any directions in my preferences. Nevermind, the last exchange at WP:FOOTY (the most important party other than me hasn't even commented, and i kind of fear i'm going to be made to look like the bad guy again) convinced me this is not the place for me. All the best, cheers! --Quite A Character (talk) 23:38, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Ferdi Kadioglu

Hi. Why did you revert my edit on Ferdi Kadioglu, saying he isn't Turkish while his last name means something significant in Turkish? He has both Turkish and Dutch citizenships like many other players like İlkay Gündoğan, Mesut Özil who have both German and Turkish citizenships. Also there are turkish pronunciations and spellings of their names on the articles. According to the Turkish Football Federation, he isn't considered a foreign footballer. Here and here you can see. --Oltnilhn (talk) 17:36, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

I guess it could be included, but it seems a somewhat unnecessary and puts undue emphasis on ethnic descent. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:59, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Paul Casey & Omega Dubai Desert Classic

Hi Matty. With you being an admin, I am seeking some clarification on another user dogging me about a potential policy violation. Can you please tell me whether I am in violation or not? Thanks.Klaysaurus (talk) 17:04, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi, could you let me know what the situation is? Mattythewhite (talk) 17:07, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Is there a platform where I can talk in real time? Sorry I'm still new to editing on Wikipedia. Also appreciate your help. Aright this is my situation. Today was the final day of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, a golf tournament on the European Tour. I edited the following pages - Paul Casey and the 2021 European Tour just before Paul Casey hit his final putt to win the tournament ( So basically I updated the above pages maybe 2 mins before the outcome). But I only edited in the information when it was mathematically impossible for any other outcome to occur. And as you can see, my edits did not need any rectification later since they were the correct edits (they were bound to be correct since I only edited the info once the result was beyond any reasonable doubt). But wjemather accused me of violating the Wikipedia policies—Verifiability, No original research and What Wikipedia is not (a crystal ball) simply because I edited in the information before the final putt rolled in. I find it incredulous that someone would nitpick about me updating the relevant pages with the correct information just because it happens to be a couple minutes prior. Am I in any violation? Thanks Klaysaurus (talk) 17:28, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

If "they were bound to be correct" you wouldn't have needed to update your guess at the scores 6 minutes later. wjematherplease leave a message... 17:51, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

If "they were not bound to be correct", I would have needed to update everything else as well, including the winner, and the runner-up. Klaysaurus (talk) 18:03, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Opinion

Matty, how's it going?

I really need your expert opinion on this one, because this has been going on for too long... Article: Capucho. I tried to phrase it to the best of my abilities because i think it's a fact worth pointing when Celtic or Rangers do not win anything in Scotland, they are the only two teams that have won anything in what? 20 years? I do not think it's POV, and please believe me, not trying to belittle Rangers or anything, not a Celtic fan, not a fan of any team for that matter.

Do you think it's POV, and it should be rephrased? I'll accommodate gladly. But we cannot have none of the other IP removing refs i add again and again (both mentioning in detail what a rocky season it was for both club and player), and that last summary (telling me "Big Jock Knew" amongst other things) really hit home, i am being accused of having a purpose other than that of improving the article(s). Seeing where they're coming from, i have already toned down the language.

Attentively, thanks in advance --2001:8A0:7667:5801:5833:F0B7:92B0:5B0B (talk) 13:39, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

I can see both sides, although I don't really have a strong feeling about it either way. The IP's attitude is concerning, however, and their edit summaries would suggest they're not coming at this with a NPOV. I'd suggest you raise it at WT:FOOTY. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:21, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Insults/reversion continue. I have now reached a full compromise in wording and left their version, keeping just the refs. Could you put it in your watchlist please? If not, no problem at all. --2001:8A0:7667:5801:A4C0:42C6:5B16:C0F5 (talk) 19:31, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Joshua King

Hi Matty. Just saying there is no way Joshua King is 180cm tall he is much taller than that. If you see clips that he played for Everton he’s about 6 ft 2. His original Bournemouth profile had listed him as 189cm tall but it was removed once he left for Everton. I think his profile in PL official site is incorrect. They had Calvert-Lewin listed as 176cm tall not so long ago and since they have updated the stats. So they have the same problem with King’s profile. Thanks. User:Haklam1218 18:55, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

It might well be that he is taller than what the Premier League list, my thinking was that the Premier League website, in theory, should be a better quality source for player heights. The profiles on Everton's website don't list heights which isn't helpful. I wouldn't be opposed to you changing the height back, although I wonder if it might be worth raising at WT:FOOTY for more opinions. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 19:07, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
This is the source from the official AFC Bournemouth website where they listed him as 189cm tall. https://www.afcb.co.uk/teams/first-team/joshua-king/ Pre-1 February 2021 before he moved to Everton, the height section had this web page as reference. Unfortunately Bournemouth had now removed the page as King had left. User:Haklam121819:20, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Leading scorers: the early years

Hi Matty, hope you're well? I'm heading both back in time a bit and down into the lower leagues now as I try to keep slogging through all the play-off final articles. The top scorer details are very hard to come by pre-mid-1990s as you noted, so I was hoping you'd be willing and able to help me for about the fiftieth time? I'm currently looking at 1992 Football League Third Division play-off Final but with a view to doing all those around that time in all the leagues too! But if you could get me started with Stockport and Posh for 91/92, that'd be brilliant. Cheers, and thanks as always for your help. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 21:27, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

As he made 6 edits yesterday to remove the Blyth statistics from Lee Clark (footballer) I think that the time has come to institute a block. As he’s only ever made edits on or about Clark, I think the ban should be permanent. He’s clearly on a mission to improve Clark’s CV. Daemonickangaroo2018 (talk) 09:55, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

Well there are, see e.g. Ghazi Ayadi (which is where I noticed the issue). I have no issue with you changing the parameter but only if a bot is run at the same time to fix any breakages. You cannot change the parameter and leave broken links. GiantSnowman 20:43, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

A bot has recently been run across the site to change all instances of |accessdate= with |access-date=. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:45, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
Either it hasn't reached it yet or it missed it, for whatever reason. Why don't you put a bot request through just for this template and then once that's been approved/started we can change the template? GiantSnowman 20:55, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
I wonder if there might be a way of it accepting both parameters? Mattythewhite (talk) 20:58, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
That would work, because editors will use both - and both have been acceptable in templates previously? GiantSnowman 21:02, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I recently saw that you reverted one of my recent edits on David Moyes for vandalism and I think a mistake was made. What happened was I saw an IP add an unsourced nickname for David Moyes. Then, I found a source for it and published it. Then, for some reason, you immediately reverted it with the reason of vandalism being given without any explanation. Could you please explain why you reverted it? Thank you! NoahDavid771 (talk) 20:04, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

Edit: I see in the edit history that the nickname was unencyclopedic, but I'm not sure why I was warned for vandalism when all I did was cite a source.

Shkodran Mustafi - FA Cups

Hi Matty - I note you deleted two FA cups from the honours section of this post when an independent source was provided for this input. Please could you explain this edit?Shef1234 (talk) 11:01, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

The report does indeed state that "he won the FA Cup twice", but is vague on the details and doesn't specify whether he actually received medals for these wins. IMO we need something more concrete before restoring this content. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:42, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks Matty. I have two other possible sources that confirm this interpretation: Source 1 and Source 2. The second one is probably the clearest. The is also footage of him collecting his medal at both finals. Suggest possibly using a combination of sources? Thanks. Shef1234 (talk) 09:31, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

Maradona ancestry

Hi, I noticed you have accepted a version on Maradona claiming the man was of Italian ancestry contradicting literally every single reliable source from his home country, namely Argentina. I don't know why I cannot edit this article directly and it seems to require approval but I would appreciate if you restored the correct version which has reliable (Argentine) sources on his family genealogy and thus ancestry. This is a question of universal consensus and not even a matter of debate in Argentina. For many years there have been editors periodically pushing the view that Maradona was Italian (for reasons which are beyond me) and this issue seems to reappear periodically so it would be great if we remained aware of such blatant errors on the English language version of Wiki. Thanks. Historian734 (talk) 19:35, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

The article is subject to pending changes protection, which is why changes need to be accepted before being visible. I would recommend you raise this topic this at the article talk page, as we're not getting anywhere with the current back and forth. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:55, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

@Enemyriderhood: Hello. :-) I'm not Mattythewhite but I had a look at the article. Two sources currently in the article, 11v11 and Soccerbase, give his birth place as Dewsbury, so I put that in. A central policy of Wikipedia, Wikipedia:Verifiability, states: "Wikipedia does not publish original research. Its content is determined by previously published information rather than the beliefs or experiences of editors". Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 17:32, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

User: JimmyCrow

I am having repeated issues with User talk:JimmyCrow, whom I have warned three separate times about arbitrarily changing date and language formats on Sergiño Dest’s page. The most recent time I posted a warning on his talk page, he simply copied the warning and posted the identical thing on my talk page immediately after again vandalizing Dest’s page. I have reason to believe that he has also used several sock puppet IPs to do the same thing. Something must be done about this user. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Anwegmann (talk) 03:20, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

It's a BBC article confirming Manchester City won the FA Cup. How more reliable can you get. "The ref doesn't even mention his name" - since when does an match report list the entire playing squad of the team throughout the tournament. Every other Man City player who was in that squad has that reference for winning the 19-20 FA Cup. --Calcium17 (talk) 14:51, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

The source might make it clear that Man City won the 2018/19 FA Cup, but it doesn't establish that Fernandinho did. You might call it a lack of common sense, I call it abiding by the sourcing standards that should be expected of an encyclopaedia. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:54, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

My edit to Andre wisdom

Hi Matty,

I’m sorry I’ve only just come across your response to my edit - I only made login to amend the part mentioning Andre’s family.

I am the ‘source’ as you put it. Whilst we like to keep our daughter, and her sister private - it was upsetting when Andre was attacked and his daughters were not acknowledged in any way publicly.

We don’t want their names to be public, more so to respect their privacy. But it should be known that Andre has two beautiful and smart little girls.

Kind regards Annie Arw1804 (talk) 19:43, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your message. Content on Wikipedia, especially that on the biography of a living person, must be verifiable, i.e. that readers can check that the information comes from a reliable source. Content needs to be based on reliable, published sources, per WP:RS; we cannot include content for which no published source exists, per WP:OR. Unless there is a source which we can include as a reference, this content can't be included. I've done a brief Google search and haven't been able to find anything, but if you could provide a link to a reliable source I'd be happy to restore it. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 20:37, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

Seems to me an open-and-shut case of trying to enhance a player's bio, with wording like "remarkable", a "3-1 rout" (what the hell? Really?!), etc, etc. The international career "improvements" ended with ten lines full of matches where Mr. Oliveira DID NOT PLAY (!); for daring to revert this nonsense i was myself reverted, then warned in my talkpage. What's your intake on this (please note: i am now trying to salvage something from their "additions" - i.e. another one, they stated player was loaned to Paços Ferreira then bought outright by that club and later re-purchased by Porto. How many refs did the IP add to back that up? ZERO! I had to take care of that)? I think my last version was more accurate and concise, and if you happen to agree with me please revert back to that version. In the meantime, i am trying to show some respect to the IP and keep some of their sourced info, with the due adjustments.

P.S. My oh my, found out about this last week or so: the person who stalked me like crazy for months, has been blocked TEN times since they started working in the project (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Hippo43&diff=1006911097&oldid=1006863658), and i'm the one who (according to them, their own words) is full of myself! OK then...

Attentively, keep up the good work --85.243.89.253 (talk) 23:47, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Reinstated some, with sources. If you think more needs to be removed just say so, i'll accommodate. Doubt: since it's now established/sourced only one season at Paços was on loan, how do we separate the statistical chart below duly? --85.243.89.253 (talk) 01:21, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

I've separated the two Porto spells in the table. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:32, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Great teamwork, thanks! But one thing still missing, methinks: at Paços, the 2013/14 season is a loan, and the following campaign a permanent spell (subsequently, he was re-bought by Porto). --85.243.89.253 (talk) 01:48, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Please use common sense redux

"Hello, I'm Mattythewhite. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Darlington Nagbe, but you didn't provide a reliable source. The heading as you reverted ignores Nagby's two years with Atlanta and his season in Columbus. As for citations, I linked to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_Cup_2018, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Campeones_Cup where you can see Nagby on the game roster. Your revision makes no sense at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonathan m peterson (talkcontribs) 21:25, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Please see WP:CIRC; we can't use other Wikipedia articles as sources. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:29, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

sorry, but that's just stupid. his rostering for the game is sourced in the linked page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_Cup_2018 - https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/12/08/2018-mls-cup-lineups-larrys-mabiala-returns-portland-timbers, if this page needs a direct citation for every fact, then you need to delete his participation in the league from 2017 on as well as participation in those cups in the bottom. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonathan m peterson (talkcontribs) 21:37, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Whether you think that's "stupid" is immaterial, it's just the way it is. Why not just cite the MLS link? Mattythewhite (talk) 21:50, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

You are wrong. The citation rule you are referring to is:"citation needed "for any material challenged or likely to be challenged, and for all quotations, anywhere in article space." No one is challenging the facts, or likely to since they're clear public record. I, and 70K other people, sat in the stands and watched those two games. You're being pendantic and incorrectly using the citation rule for unknown reasons. As for why NOT cite the link - the SAME EXACT FACTS appear elsewhere in THIS article uncited. I simply updated the intro to current day instead of ignoring the last 3 years of Nagby's career, details of which appear uncited lower in the article. If you'd like I can chew through the Nagby article and point out the several hundred facts that are also uncited. Birth date? Place of Birth? Height? Should I continue? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonathan m peterson (talkcontribs) 16:26, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Except I did challenge the material, by reverting your addition. Wouldn't it be easier if you just added a reference, like anyone else would? Or are you entitled to play by different rules? Mattythewhite (talk) 16:50, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Bruno N'Gotty

Hello. If you're sure that the correct spelling is Ngotty – I'm not suggesting you're wrong: I don't know – you might want to consider using a better source. Many apparently reliable sources: the LFP, UEFA, the Premier League, ENFA... use the apostrophe, and many others are inconsistent. I'm not convinced that the French equivalent of something like companycheck.co.uk would be decisive, even if it was considered WP:RS for name spelling anyway, which is doubtful, and not a violation of WP:BLPPRIMARY. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:25, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

Guy why did you undo my edit. He won the ePremier League and I cited the source which I think is sufficient. It may sound trivial but it's worthwhile noting! Would it stay if I make an account? 223.16.201.51 (talk) 10:04, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

It's nothing to do with you being an unregistered user, I just don't see it as a notable honour. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:42, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

Why the short description changes

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Miroslav_Klose&curid=201840&diff=1016010785&oldid=1015947902, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bastian_Schweinsteiger&diff=1016006511&oldid=1012616005 and probably others? I can see using your version for reasons of WP:COMMONALITY, but it may also act as a red flag to those who do not like the term. Walter Görlitz (talk) 23:37, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

It's to achieve commonality, as you allude to, and to maintain consistency with the descriptions at Wikidata. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:43, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Can you please pitch in in this article (maybe it won't be needed, maybe the other person will give up)? I know this has been done several times in the past (in said page, mind you, not all over WP), but can't remember exactly who did it and when... Honours where the player did not appear once in the league/cup and did not have a single bench presence keep getting added, getting a bit tiresome.

Attentively, thanks in advance --85.243.89.253 (talk) 21:17, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

  • They continue, claiming Masip was (verbatim) in the "...Champions League Squad for 2014-15. He was also in the squad for the final". I checked the pertinent WP article, Claudio Bravo is shown on the bench. I leave it to your hands, don't want this to escalate because of me and my proverbial lack of patience :) --85.243.89.253 (talk) 21:40, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Copa del Rey stuff removed for reasons that escape me, but believe me i will re-add those (with sources of course!). No need to reply if you don't want, cheers. --85.243.89.253 (talk) 22:08, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

I removed them because he didn't participate in the finals. Otherwise, I've added sources for the rest and added another honour. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:09, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Just the fact he played in that 8-1 against SD Huesca grants him a medal, i'm on it now. Technical question now: even if a team wins by, let's say, 31-0 (it has happened!), we are not to write, ever, stuff like "rout" (not encyclopedical, perhaps?)? --85.243.89.253 (talk) 22:51, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

I believe we've discussed before, but do we know that playing in an earlier round *necessarily* entitles a player to a medal?
I would just stick to neutral wording like win, victory etc. The scoreline speaks for itself. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:55, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

1 - at least in Portugal/Spain, yes (heck, some players have even taken the field in the last minute of the last league game (for example) to be eligible. On a very related note, in Miklós Fehér's article there is a newspaper article (Público) that explains that the player, sadly died months before, was eligible for a 2004 Taça de Portugal Final winners' medal because he played in two previous rounds); 2 - very well put, sir! --85.243.89.253 (talk) 22:58, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

"Bonus track": what i really fail to see as an honour is a play-off promotion (in Spain, as in England, a team can be promoted after finishing SIXTH in the regular season! How's that an accolade?), but out of respect for your work i won't even contest it (you did the same at Vicente Guaita back in the day, maybe there is a logic to it that i'm missing). --85.243.89.253 (talk) 23:04, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

I would say it's notable because it's a) a competition in and of itself that the player won (where the team finished the regular season is neither here nor there) and b) it's a promotion. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:11, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Well, not "missing the logic" anymore ;) Thanks for explaining, got it. --85.243.89.253 (talk) 23:37, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Finished my stuff there. Question: following the logic in honours, shouldn't the "UEFA Champions League winning players" category be removed (or does cat apply to an entire squad of a given season even if the honour does not necessarily)? Mind you, i did not remove anything, wait for your input. --85.243.89.253 (talk) 23:57, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Done, thanks for the teamwork! Let's see if the other user now respects this, hopefully so. --85.243.89.253 (talk) 00:10, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

Greek anon

Hello. I just went to give a final warning at User talk:82.102.50.120 for yet again removing a reference from a page and found you already did so a couple of days ago. In which case, do you think it's time they had another rest from editing? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:12, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Blocked for one month. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:10, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Honours...

...again the honours! Can you please pitch in/revert at Sergi Roberto? Again, matches where player did not even make the bench reinstated, with the official website clearly inflating their players' accolades.

Perhaps when (if!) you revert you won't be called a vandal like i did, or perhaps not... Attentively --85.243.89.253 (talk) 15:57, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Need an admin.

Hi Mattythewhite, I need your help with something, and you’re the only admin I can find. There is a user called Groton Herald making disruptive edits to Groton, Massachusetts in an attempt to make the town look better. They’re removing parts of the article they find disagreeable, such as the town’s segregated past. And the name, Groton Herald? Pure COI. If you could help me out, that would be great. Thanks, HelenDegenerate (talk) 23:00, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

League record by opponent pages

Hello. Last season, when the Nat North was abandoned with a few games left, we both added notes to the opponents left unplayed. What were you thinking of doing this season, with pretty well all opponents unplayed at least once and some not faced at all? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:41, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

As the season has been declared null and void, I suppose the results (as well as appearances, goals etc on other articles) should be removed, perhaps with an explanatory note? Mattythewhite (talk) 15:48, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
It's interesting. Our 2019–20 Northern Premier League article and similar include league table, results grids, top scorers for those null-and-voided seasons. The NPL website and Isthmian League wbsite retain their archive of results, top scorers etc for that season. The Southern League has full stats club by club, e.g. Nuneaton's results and apps/goals.
Currently at least, the National League website still has full details for this season. And Soccerway hasn't yet expunged them. Which pushes me towards leaving them all in, results, apps, goals, with notes where appropriate. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:39, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Matty, this user (which you have already warned twice) has clearly shown what he thinks about wiki-interaction and guidelines: my message summarily reverted without one inch of reply (as was yours regarding Jordi Alba and the same topic some weeks ago), false honours reinstated.

You have been briefed, cheers --85.243.89.253 (talk) 20:23, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

  • Reverted again, and called a vandal again! Are you going to assist here or should i take my query elsewhere (regarding Federico Fazio, i'm not going to contest you on your edit, but i really thought that when a player played several matches as a CD/DM he would definitely be considered an utility player)? --85.243.89.253 (talk) 13:02, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
    • I agree that they probably should be removed, as the player wasn't involved in those matches, although really we need to replace the source, as the current one does included the contentious honours. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:23, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

But for now they get their way, including calling other people vandals? Okeydokey, i leave article in peace regarding that aspect. --85.243.89.253 (talk) 18:40, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

That's not what I said, at all. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:08, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Apologies if i seem to infer that in my reply, not my intention at all! It's just the current version is now that wrong user's, the one who calls other users "vandals". And also of course i'm not the one to tell you how to do your job, no sir. I was just telling you how i was going to do mine (stop edit-warring in that part of Mr. Roberto's article, sick and tired of that since the other party involved refuses to listen and/or interact) --85.243.89.253 (talk) 20:36, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Table code

Hi Matty. This is a trivial issue. I'm just bringing it your attention because of the relatively large diff here: if we want consecutive cells in tables bolded, "!!" should be used not "||". "||" works but "!!" is more correct. See Help:Table. I actually went around changing "!!" to "||" for a while before I heard about this. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 11:08, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

@Robby.is.on: Is there any specific guidance at H:TABLE? Mattythewhite (talk) 21:43, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
H:TABLE states: Consecutive table header cells may be added on same line separated by double marks (!!); or start on new lines, each with its own single mark (!). Also, all examples of bolded cells are written with "!!".
Beyond that, I remember there was a very convincing argument why "!!" was better that I am unable to recall. I just scanned my User Talk messages until 2018 but couldn't find the conversation where I learnt about it. Robby.is.on (talk) 08:44, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
