Sunday January 14: Wikipedia Day NYC 2018

You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day NYC 2018, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 16th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with keynotes, plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

And there will be cake.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

10:00am - 6:30 pm at Ace Hotel, 20 West 29th Street in Manhattan

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 18:41, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You previously discussed the issue of two articles at Key West, Florida and Key West. I have proposed a merger of the two articles at Talk:Key West if you care to participate. —  AjaxSmack  17:21, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work

[edit]

Nice work at List of mayors of Ocean City, New Jersey, my favorite topic for a list. You missed the big debate at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Mayors of Wildwood, New Jersey. When done don't forget to add "Category:Lists of mayors of places in New Jersey" and you might want to add Mayor of Ocean City, New Jersey as a "position" at Wikidata like I did for Mayor of Absecon, New Jersey then you can see how it connects to the mayors. --RAN (talk) 02:56, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • You can remove the link to Wikidata later from your list, they are being debated now at WP:MoS on the talk page as to whether we should link to them from mayor lists. --RAN (talk) 04:19, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) for the help! I'm working on all sorts of Ocean City related articles, but I hope to get the mayor page published one of these days. Maybe the Ocean City library has some info I can find. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:17, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I sent emails to 10 cities at the reference desk for the library and so far only two have responded. I also asked them to contact the mayor's office for me to see if they had a copy. One sent me the full list which I posted as PD-ineligible, List of Mayors of Wildwood, New Jersey. Mayor of Perth Amboy, New Jersey told me they had no such list, and was glad I was compiling one. All the others in Category:Lists of mayors of places in New Jersey that are partial lists, never responded. I think you can post your list now, and add in the missing information later. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Mayors of Wildwood, New Jersey had strong support for the lists. Do you have a free newspapers.com account through Wikipedia? --RAN (talk) 16:25, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a newspapers.com account now. I stopped editing for a while. I'm glad I missed the AFD about the mayors lists though! I'll see what I can find today before I publish. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:28, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Did you read the debate on linking to Wikidata at WP:MoS? I also have added three mayors from Ocean City to wikidata here. I do not think there is enough information for a full article, just mini biographies on the mayor page like you started. Get a free account at Familysearch too, the LDS website for genealogy. You can find the births and deaths of the mayors ... and your own family. --RAN (talk) 16:29, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Cape May County, New Jersey, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Delta (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Mayors of Ocean City, New Jersey

[edit]

I made the list sortable to match the dozen other lists, I hope that is ok. It required using a template on the dates to make them sort chronologically. --RAN (talk) 00:07, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ):, absolutely that is OK! The article is out in the open now, so I'm happy to see others edit. I'm going to try and get a picture of the current mayor (and eventually get others in Category:Lists of mayors of places in New Jersey). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:15, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter

[edit]

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

  • United States Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
  • Germany FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
  • India Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
  • United States Ceranthor, India Numerounovedant, Minnesota Carbrera, Netherlands Farang Rak Tham and Romania Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hey Andrew, thanks for messaging me about haunted locations in Atlantic County. I love helping people with anything paranormal.

Here's what I got off the top of my head:

  • Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City
  • Jonathan Pitney House in Absecon
  • Abbott House in Mays Landing

And of course, Leeds Point in the Pine Barrens, home of the Jersey Devil.

Ford Piquette Avenue Plant FAC

[edit]

I nominated the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant article for FA status here: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Ford Piquette Avenue Plant/archive1. I saw on the Wikipedia:Mentoring for FAC page that you have an interest in history, so I believe the subject of this article may interest you. This building played a huge yet mostly unknown role in the early years of the automotive industry in the United States. Any input that you would be willing to provide on its review page would be helpful, but what will help the most is confirming whether it meets the FA criteria. Thanks in advance. Jersey townships

[edit]

Hi, Is there a reason you deleted/merged all those articles about towns in New Jersey? Union Township for example used to exist and is well sourced. Why is that now a redirect to another town? Sir Joseph (talk) 22:34, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sir Joseph: - in cases where two areas have the same history, it is more useful for them to be one article. With regards to Union Township, I merged any information that wasn't already in Lyndhurst (which became the rump municipality after the boroughs were split off in the late 1800s). Any additional sources about Union Township should be used to build up Lyndhurst's article, specifically the history section. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:38, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Importance

[edit]

Hey, is there a reason you made these top? Back when you and I were more active in the good old days, top importance was originally suppose to be 1% of WPTC article as a means of controlling the "I think the storm is important so it must be top" rationale, so is there a specific reason you're ducking that? It's not the end of the world; I'm just curious. Also, why Gafilo over say like Leon-Eline, given its extensive impact on Mozambique? YE Pacific Hurricane 20:49, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So I did the math suggests we have 2518 (soon to be 2519) articles (counting list class, without is it 2498), so yeah, you're additions actually keep us in line. As for Leon-Eline, I've always viewed it as the most important SWIO system, given that AFAIK it's long term effects on Mozambique were greater than Gafilo's on Madagascar. Re:2003-04 SWIO

[edit]

Passed 2003-04 SWIO. I should point out that I'm pretty sure the tables are decently up to date. I did largely keep the WPAC up to check last year, and quite frankly, the only people that add sufficient content to past articles, especially in the SWIO are the ones that have historically kept the tables up to date. I wouldn't be shocked if there were some errors here and there though. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:59, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

[edit]

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

Good luck! 1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

hurricane/tropical storm pattern for Atlantic Hurricane List 4

[edit]

Hi Hurricanehink. Have you ever noticed that every twelve years since 1982, the Atlantic hurricane season has an El Niño? In 1982/early 1983 there was a strong El Niño; 1982 had six storms. In 1994-95, there was another El Niño, however in 1994 there were several memorable storms (Alberto and Gordon). In 2006, there was yet again an El Niño. But that time, there were nine named storms.

Once again for 2018-19, the forecasters are calling for yet another El Niňo. We don't know the strength of the El Niňo just yet. However, we do see that the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season will have less storms than normal. That's according to NOAA and other predictors.

Angela Maureen (talk) 13:50, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@September 1988: - I hadn't noticed that. I do know that El Niño tends to happen every 2-3 years, so it's a coincidence that it's happened every 12 years. Remember that the atmosphere has no memory, but there are certainly patterns and cycles. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:19, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
  • Hel, Poland Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
  • Scotland Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
  • Other contestants who qualified for the final round were Marshall Islands Nova Crystallis, Republic of Texas Iazyges, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack and United States Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Your featured topic, Wikipedia:Featured topic candidates/Off-season Atlantic hurricanes/archive1, has become incomplete. That's because Tropical Storm Alberto (2018) hasn't reached at least GA status three months after the storm dissipated. If it's not nominated shortly, than I will nominate the topic for delisting. Armbrust The Homunculus 10:49, 28 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Armbrust:, you are correct that Alberto needs to become a GA. For previous featured topics, the standard was that the article had to be improved to a GA within three months of the first official report from the responsible Regional Specialized Meteorological Center. Alberto's tropical cyclone report was issued on October 18, only 11 days ago. I believe we have three months from then, which is January 18. Now that you reminded me, I'll do my best to improve the storm to GA status by then, along with cyclones Sagar, Mekunu, and Luban for the good topic of Arabian Peninsula tropical cyclones. I know other users are diligent in their efforts to improve hurricanes Lane, Walaka, and Willa within three months of their reports being released. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:58, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. Another exotic retention period, which isn't documented anywhere. Armbrust The Homunculus 15:36, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's more of a matter of being able to improve the articles to GA. Tropical cyclone editors generally wait until the official report is released, when some information is released for the first time. Sometimes, insurance reports are still coming in after three months, or people die months after the storm from injuries. It's not like a movie or an album, which can be improved within three months. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:33, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Armbrust: I believe that these retention periods have been documented before by a former director of it and in this FTRC.Jason Rees (talk) 00:57, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup!

[edit]

Hello and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Cat 2 list

[edit]

Hey, I just got this list done. I figured we really needed one of these. What are your thoughts on it? NoahTalk 02:04, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dang, I thought people would be chomping at the bit to discuss an FLC, but it appears to be a ghost town. NoahTalk 19:49, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
FLCs don’t usually get too much attention. I hope my comments aren’t unreasonable - it should be easy to address them. Let me know if you have any issues. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 19:57, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sunday January 13: Wikipedia Day 2019 in NYC

You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day 2019, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 18th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event features keynote presentations, panels, lightning talks, and, of course, open space sessions.

And there will be cake.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

9:30AM - 6:00PM at Ace Hotel, 20 West 29th Street in Manhattan

We especially encourage folks to add your 3-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Wikimedia New York City Team 20:34, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

(You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future notifications for NYC-area events by adding or removing your name from this list.)
