[edit]

Yes, I saw you comment on Miss Madeline's talk page and yes things have been great expect for the EPAC stuff. Will you try and straiting a little when you have a chance bat least let me know if you are for or againsted on my talk page we are spit even about this. We are still doing great, though. Well i need to return to my wikibreak. Cheers. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 02:02, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you comment on Miss Madeline's talk page about the newsletter and for the most part have being going well. The only thing that is going no so great is we (the project) are having conflicts about articles for every storm in the Eastern Pacific. I want to know if you are for and against articles for every storm in the Eastern Pacific. When i welcomed Juliancolton I wanted to welcome him back from his break, what I gave him was the closet Friendly had. I gave him a warning because of User talk:Yellow Evan#Hurricane Adolph message you sent me Also, I will be taken a short wikibreak starting this afternoon. Cheers. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 13:31, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I live on the west coast to let you know and I will go back to break after I finish the records section for my Tina sandbox and start my Virgil and Hazel Sandboxes.I thought Daniel and Kenneth are notable (which you did a good job on both) and I forgot about Odile which I am surprised it is still a stub. I will also do my third try to improve Hurricane Kathleen before I go on my wikibreak.

The day you went on wikibreak was the day this started. Here is some of the discussion.

Cheers. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 15:26, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will stop with Hernan to aviod an edit war.

Too late, sorry. This one was my fault. The article is edit protected for three days. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 18:56, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since you already know about the newsletter, this is just a formality, so I'm not spamming you with either the full or short version. But you do need this:

WikiProject Tropical cyclones, awards you this Cyclone Barnstar for your great work

You were selected as the Member of the Month in the October issue of the WikiProject Tropical cyclones newsletter.

I just thought that since you usually write the newsletter yourself, you couldn't possibly be MotM because you wouldn't give an award to yourself. Well, since you're on a wikibreak now I've stepped in and made it so you didn't have to give yourself anything. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 02:30, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back Hink! Good to see you're fully back. I don't know if you remember this, but do you remember User:Hurricanewatcher? (before that note was put on the user page) Cyclonebiskit (talk) 19:25, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 19:26, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There's always a giveaway ;) I probably should get working on that eventually...Shouldn't have gone after a project that large from the beginning. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 19:35, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think the page needs a total reworking after comparing it to the other list of (state) hurricanes articles. Mine was based off of a literal list, which was fun to type. But it's probably much better to replace all those tables with actual text. Off-season storms? there's an article for that now? Cyclonebiskit (talk) 19:44, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, that was mainly because Hurricane Ele (2002) got me a little annoyed so I suddenly couldn't edit as much. But a newly added FL is rejuvenating, and I also have to create a GA outline for Dylan620. The little fishstorms also are enjoyable since they're easy to write and quick (in relative terms) to finish. I like finishing articles quickly without sacrificing quality but with an article of that size, I don't think that possible. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 19:53, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This might be a little late, but I have to admit, I was quite happy to find that you had returned to Wikipedia. I must agree with the other WP:WPTC members in that you are a fantastic editor. The day you leave Wikipedia may be the single worst in the project's history. And even though you were too late to adopt me (I turned you down in favor of Juliancolton (talk · contribs) because I wanted you to have a relaxing vacation before returning, plus Juliancolton is also highly experienced), you can still drop a note at my talk page if you want to help in any way at all. Anyway, as a token of appreciation for your extremely good quality work, I, Dylan620, award you with this:
The Barnstar of Diligence
Your contributions are timeless. You have been a deserving administrator for a good eight months. You have written 42 featured articles, the WP:TROP record and second-highest of any Wikipedian. You are a highly sage and social part of the community. Wear this barnstar in pride, Hink, because you deserve it more than any other WP:WPTC member I know. --Dylan620 (Homeyadda yadda yaddaOoooohh!) 01:54, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pacific typhoon articles

[edit]

Since the project appears to be getting active in improving the season articles (long delayed woohoo,) I've been directing my continuing process of improving articles I've significantly contributed to GA status to season articles. Recently, this included the 1982 Pacific typhoon season, and I plan on getting the 1981 and 1983 seasons to GA this month...seems like they just need the extra info from HKO and season summaries and they're done. At some point during the process, I noticed that the 1939 Pacific typhoon season GA article was missing a season summary. I was unclear after looking at this article whether the Pacific typhoon season articles needed season summaries like the Atlantic and Pacific hurricane season articles did, since at the time the 1939 Pacific typhoon article was the only one to reach GA in that basin. FYI. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:11, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be possible...?

[edit]

I've been thinking about this for a while so to end my contemplation over this, I'll just ask. Would you be willing to be my mentor for adminship and the requirements that are needed to become one? There are several things which I still have to learn but I'm not sure how go about them but with your help, I think it can get done :) Cyclonebiskit (talk) 00:59, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I thought you would say that, but you are a really great editor/admin, and learning from ones greater than oneself is (IMO) one of the best ways to learn.
This coaching/teaching wouldn't be the main block behind an adminship on my part, but the basis on how to be one, knowing the tools, policies, do's and don'ts, etc...
Answers to the questions:
  • 1. It depends on what you mean by contributions. In terms of a literal edit or article, I think would be the more in-depth view at the more minor storms in the seasons. In a non-edit sense, helping others and answering issues is a more prominent thing than an edit.
  • 2. Almost came clean on this one. One 3RR mishap with Hurricane Hernan (2008). I made 6 reverts within an hour and a half. There is also the everlasting controversy with Evan. I was with him from the start, so I don't really want to see him fall like he is now. He is trying, although it's not that noticeable, his writing has improved in the article mainspace, no the talk pages. Other than that, I don't think I've gotten any warnings other than the occasional off-topic conversations on talk pages.
  • 3. With an extra admin having access to the tools, it allows for quicker responses (not that they are quick to begin with) and an extra eye on catching vandals. My main reasoning with the tools is not to have them for the sake of having them, but to have the ability to use them when someone needs them to be used or a user is in need of a block.

Cyclonebiskit (talk) 03:36, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most admins take that path? Seems kinda strange that you go for it just for that "power". I'll put my thoughts on Evan there later today. Article I am most proud of...I would say at the moment, Tropical Storm Karina (2008). But once I see how the 2005 Pacific hurricane season plays out, it could shift to that article. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 13:02, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although the 2006 PHS is good it needs at least in my opinion needs a little work. I think 2006 Pacific hurricane season#Unclassified storm should be rewritten since it is a copy of List of storms in the 2006 Pacific hurricane season#Other Storms. Cheers. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home , User:Yellow Evan/Sandbox 05:30, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The section might need to be edited, then it probably will pass GA. Cheers. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home , User:Yellow Evan/Sandbox 15:45, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Having all the images on the right seems a bit dull to me. As with other season articles, it seems that they are alternated right, left, right, etc... In all honesty it's a great looking article (I have yet to read it) :) Cyclonebiskit (talk) 05:01, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since you've given me great advice on writing, I just thought I'd let you know that I just created that article today. The article's B-Class rating gives me my single best article so far; if it passes FLC, I'll have authored my own piece of featured content. Since your great at featured (insert either article, list, picture, portal, topic, or sound here) candidate reviews, I was hoping you could look over the timeline, and place your opinion on the nomination page. I look forward to seeing your review. Come to think of it, I look forward to seeing everyone's review, since I'm trying to gather reviewers. :-) --Dylan620 (Homeyadda yadda yaddaOoooohh!) 00:11, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

??

[edit]

To improve articles, I need to know the stubs, starts, and C class EPAC storm articles, because it is hard to decide which one I should improve. There are still possibilities like Hurricane Tico (1983) or Hurricane Liza (1976) or Tropical Storm Norma (1970). Also, how would you rate the Timeline of the 2008 PHS and the 2008 PHS if current class did not exist? I would like to let you know Hurricane Fausto (2002) has not been reviewed for GA and I nominated it weeks ago. Cheers.Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home , User:Yellow Evan/Sandbox

1994 Pacific typhoon season

[edit]

I've been working on this article the last week or two, completing one of the only tasks where Chacor and I worked together before his departure (no sniping or anything!) How do you determine the US equivalent for foreign currencies, let alone how much the damage would be worth nowadays? We have a few damage estimates in the article that are not converted into US dollars, and I'm not sure it will be able to pass GA without the issue being resolved. Chiming in on your oppose, here. WP:VG has had a longstanding policy of not requiring citations for straight plot summaries in general. There are multiple reasons for this, including that the game itself is considered an acceptable primary source, that mainstream coverage of the plot of video games is often incorrect or more generally incomplete, and that citing such sources which contain the entire plot, for example game guides or walkthroughs fall afoul of our sourcing policies. [edit]

While you're removing the names from the top, can you remove the italics too? If you guys want it, it can be easily added to the code. Formatting shouldn't be done within the parameters. Potapych (talk) 03:18, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For example, 2008 Atlantic hurricane season has Ike italicized (and Arthur and Paloma). I don't like text formatting within the parameters because it means we can't change the template to give everything the same format without screwy results. (I say this about references in templates too - you never know if we'll want to change something to an input for an expression. It's also really hard to read.) [edit]

Hi Hink.

Can i ask why you removed the list of names from the SPac article? - i would ask u on IRC but i can not get on for some reason Jason Rees (talk) 02:22, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

fair enough but i thought that we included names that could off been used within the season (ie 2006/2007 AHS) Jason Rees (talk) 17:10, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The names section seems a bit pointless if you just have the four or so listed there. However, the names list is a bit long in that basin. I suggested earlier on a talk page that we list just the remaining names from the previous list, and the complete next list. (There are four lists in the Southwest Pacific - A, B, C, & D). This way the section would have some context, and it probably wouldn't carry over any retired names or names that have been removed (which might cause some confusion). This is basically just an active working list which all the other basin pages have. Potapych (talk) 03:20, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2006 Pacific hurricane season

[edit]

Hi,Hurricane, I'm pleased that your article got promoted. Can I ask that you still deal with the outstanding points which I left yesterday? They weren't highly significant, but I spent a fair while on them and I'd like to feel my time wasn't wasted. Brianboulton (talk) 00:42, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Class

[edit]

There's nothing wrong with a discussion of the class of an article, but the class of Ike and Kyle had been switched a few times since their creation (Ike's got longwinded and drug me into the debate.) In retrospect, I do like the compromise which was reached regarding class of an article in the absense of a TCR (C class at most,) but believe we occasionally get overzealous as a project in downgrading articles. It seems people are generally allergic to assigning C class for some reason. Some projects still don't use it. Do you think it is a lack of differentiation between C class and Start/B class, or some other reason? Thegreatdr (talk) 13:07, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My take on the project articles has been similar to Yellow Evan's. I like the idea of being able to improve all of the articles single-handedly from Start/Stub class to FA. The problem is that none of us has enough time in the day to do this. Once I realized this wasn't possible, I tried to elevate many of the stubs to start, then the start articles to B class. But this didn't solve the Stub/Start dilemna we have in the project because people are constantly creating tiny new articles. Ultimately, I've fallen into a role of improving articles I created/upgraded to B class to GA, since FA can take a significant amount of time per article, particularly for non-storm articles. It has taken a year to get about 40 GA articles passed...so it will apparently be another year or two before I accomplish this action, especially if I keep tackling extra season articles. WPAC season

[edit]

Hink, a trop met noticed the problem with the table listing the WPAC hurricane season as only running from April to January, when it actually runs year-'round. The text is correct, but the table is not. Can you please change it to run 12 months? Also if you go to the reference attributing the season length (the HRD FAQ) it says the WPAC season runs the entire year.

Thanks,

There are still several that you haven't answered. Would you mind also answering "How do you choose an article to bring to FLC?" and "What motivated you to work on your first Featured list?" If you don't want to answer the rest, that's fine. Thanks, Scorpion0422 00:55, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

International Best Track

[edit]

I saw that link and I tried it out with one of the more troubled track maps. Would this be preferable to the JTWC ones? Do you think it would be okay to change some of the information in the article to reflect this, since we don't have a definite category for this storm from anywhere else?

Potapych (talk) 18:41, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it was 1-min. We don't know anything about Tracy except it's category and the speed of the wind gusts. 2-3 on the SSHS is about right for a category 4 storm in Australia. The 110 speed would make it a 5 (which it could be, but nothing on BoM's website suggests that). Potapych (talk) 21:10, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Subtropical Storm One

[edit]

Hello this isn't really supposed to be an article it's just a disambiguation page and it's not even really supposed to be a disambiguation page but it's just there for convenience but it's just like another disambiguation page and if you said

None of those storms were officially "named"; some had that as a mere designation, and some were not even classified until after the fact.

Than why do you think someone would even make an articles of Subtropical Storm One? --12george1 (talk) 03:05, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I read your comment on Evan's talk page that you have stopped writing the newsletter; if it's OK, I would like to help. Also, I, myself, have a few projects; for starters, I am working on a disambiguation page for tropical cyclones named Virginia. After that, I plan on doing all EPac season timelines from 1995-2002. I'll do 1996 first as to help Evan out with his goal. Cheers, Dylan620 Contribs Sign! 17:20, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What did you mean by dabs? BTW, the timelines are just to give me a good start. Plus, I find them rather cool to work on, and I can get a few FL's from working on timelines. I'll work on storm/season articles eventually, but judging from my not-so-smooth experience with Tropical Storm Odile (2008), I think I should build up my writing skills first. --Dylan620 Contribs Sign! 17:40, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Doing timelines and dabs is just what I'm in the mood to do, at the moment. I'll get to work on storm articles once I'm done with the 1996 EPac season timeline and the Virginia dab. --Dylan620 Contribs Sign! 18:43, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that, on the 2008 season. The anon has done a lot of seemingly random changes. As there are no edit histories, I thought they were all just silliness. I hope I haven't reverted too many corrections. Bevo74 (talk) 22:32, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Linda (1997)

[edit]

I'll take a look tomorrow at this. A problem I have to deal with in the TC rainfall climatology on the western side of North America is trying to separate out the monsoon surge-induced precipitation that moves well to the east of the tropical cyclone up the Mexico coast into the Southwest from the storm related effects for systems which move north to northwest offshore Mexico. Unless the precipitation pattern is merged, I'd leave out the monsoon surge. Give me a day to look at this. Thegreatdr (talk) 05:29, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think that looks okay? I think this article has put the storm at every single category, so I'd like to see if the basic facts are agreeable before it moves forward. Potapych (talk) 04:37, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Consider staying in a limited capacity

[edit]

One of the gripes people have with wikipedia is that it appears a bunch of kids wrote it. Granted, many do, and you were one of them, but you're also one of the most talented of the bunch. There don't seem to be many of us on wikipedia beyond 21 (I've got 15 1/2 years on you.) The skirmishes which occurred concerning the importance of the Ike article where one of the former editors called me at work turned out to be someone my age, if you can believe it. You'd have thought otherwise. Trust me, it is possible to live a life AND edit wikipedia, even if it's just minutes a day, or an hour a week. One of the things you learn with age is how to balance time more effectively. Writing more effectively also comes with time. If I didn't know how to balance time or improve writing style over the years, I certainly wouldn't be on here much. I doubt wikipedia will lose its importance over the coming years as the articles increase in value and scope. Losing someone with your writing skill, especially one who knows the system, would be a significant loss. Just a thought. You're free to do what you want, of course. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:12, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For me, wikipedia is both an outlet and outreach. The outreach couples wikipedia with my work-related research, and management has approved the time I wiki on shift, as long as it is work/research related. If it's interfering with your life, then yeah, leaving is the best option. As far as I can tell, wikipedia should be here for a while longer, and one or two of us will probably still be around. One aspect I like about editing articles on here is that I discover something new, even when researching general articles like weather, weather forecasting, and now quantitative precipitation forecasting. Just because you have a degree or are considered an expert doesn't mean you know everything. =) Thegreatdr (talk) 21:42, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
