Nuclear bomb history

Hawkeye,

Thanks for the appreciation of the Sandstone article. I'm the maintainer of a database originally intended to build up a .kml file for all the world's nuclear testing, but I've decided that I may as well spread the data around. It's in an Access database, and I've been writing Basic code to generate all the content pages (excepting, of course, the freehand content) like "Operation Sandstone" and is brethren, not only US but USSR, GB, France, China, India, Pakistan and NK. The "root" page is "Worldwide nuclear testing counts and summary", which links to the others through country-level pages down to the series (Operation) pages. I've spent the last month perfecting the VBasic code and am in the process of final application to all the pages. I redrew Crossroads through Tumbler-Snapper last night, and will plow on until all the pages are to the same level of detail. I've added references to the reflist at the bottom of the pages; placing inline refs on each line of the tables would not, I believe, be very illuminating. If you have suggestions, please, lay on.

If you'd like my humble efforts in editing your copy, I'll be glad to; just send a link or whatever is needed. My knowledge is pretty specialized (I'm a retired aerospace/software engineer and unrequited scientist of several kinds), but I may be able to add something to the effort.

SkoreKeep

If you click on the link I gave you, it will take you to the review page.
What you need to do to the nuclear tests is add a reference to the ultimate source. Otherwise, someone will eventually come along and remove it as unsourced. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:14, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Douglas MacArthur

This is a note to let the main editors of Douglas MacArthur know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on January 26, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 26, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Douglas MacArthur in 1945

Douglas MacArthur (1880–1964) was an American general who played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor, as did his father, was one of only five men to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the U.S. Army, and the only man to become a field marshal in the Philippine Army. After graduating first in his West Point class in 1903, he participated in the 1914 occupation of Veracruz and served on the Western Front during World War I, becoming the U.S. Army's youngest major general. Thereafter he held a variety of posts, including Superintendent of West Point and Chief of Staff. He retired in 1937, but was recalled to active duty during World War II. After the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, he escaped with his family and staff to Australia, where he became Supreme Commander, Southwest Pacific Area. He fulfilled a famous pledge to return to the Philippines, and officially accepted Japan's surrender on 2 September 1945. He oversaw the occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1951, implementing many reforms, and led the United Nations Command in the Korean War until President Harry Truman had him relieved of his commands in April 1951. Douglas MacArthur

Do you have a citation for the claim that his GCB was awarded by Australia, and over the objections of the British government? I have no reason to doubt either claim, but the citation given doesn't support them, it just says he was awarded the British GCB. Colonies Chris (talk) 09:49, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

I don't think the article needs an additional reference, but in articles like this, the wording sometimes carefully states the situation. Under the old Imperial Honours system the Australian government would send nominations for awards to Buckingham Palace in the United Kingdom. However the awards were still British, and the British Secretary of State for War enforced rules for quotas and eligibility. After conferring with the British, the Australian government was intending to nominate MacArthur for a KCB, George Kenney for a CB and Robert Eichelberger for a CBE for the Papuan campaign. The issue blew up when the news reached Australia that the British government was intended to confer a KCB on George Brett, a former subordinate of MacArthur, for his role as deputy ABDA commander in 1942. MacArthur considered that being given the same award would an insult, and said that he would decline any lesser award than that customarily given to four-star generals like Harold Alexander, ie the GCB, and that his subordinates would similarly decline honours. On being asked for his advice, Thomas Blamey told the government that he agreed that it was an insult, which he felt was a calculated one by the British to diminish the importance of the war in the Pacific. The Australian government then went to bat against the British, who in the end were forced to give way. As a result, MacArthur was awarded the GCB, Blamey the GBE and Kenney, Eichelberger and Edmund Herring received the KBE. See Hetherington, John (1973). Hey, about the bomb availability for Hiroshima...

http://books.google.com/books?id=JM4OD4jMsjkC&pg=PA16&dq=demonstration+only+two+bombs&hl=en&sa=X&ei=AODpUvSvF4mHogTNkIDADw&ved=0CDEQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=demonstration%20only%20two%20bombs&f=false http://books.google.com/books?id=Haf2g1mbsH8C&pg=PA86&dq=two+bombs+demonstration+Truman+and+Hiroshima+cult&hl=en&sa=X&ei=MOHpUqLQBcnzoATy-IGgAw&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=two%20bombs%20demonstration%20Truman%20and%20Hiroshima%20cult&f=false

Are these informations good enough? I was wondering because the U.S. only had two bombs by August 1945 with a few more coming later on until September and I wonder if these were good enough.XXzoonamiXX (talk) 05:24, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

No, there were three; there was also the Trinity gadget. I'm unsure how many they thought they'd have and when in May 1945. As noted in the article, the Demon Core was ready shortly after Nagasaki. Looking at the books here, we actually have four sources: Sherwin, A World Destroyed (1977), Hewlett and Anderson The New World (1962) and Compton Atomic Quest. That Teller and Strauss claimed supported a demonstration comes from US News and World Report of 15 August 1960 (which your source questions). How about bringing Chicago Pile-1 to GA instead? Hawkeye7 (talk) 09:36, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
I might look into this information deeper but besides, I was asking if these information were valid for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki article. One of them says by August 1945, the U.S. only had two bombs left. XXzoonamiXX (talk) 19:22, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
It is the sort of thing that we would not say in the article, because it would lead to a misunderstanding. In the 1940s they did not have nuclear weapons like we have today, they only had piles of bomb components. Counting bombs was therefore problematic. What we normally count is the number of cores. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:25, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Ok, point taken but we're talking about the bomb available for combat use. There is no doubt the bombs was still processing after the two bombs were used in combat but i'm talking about the bomb availability. I could say that the U.S. only had two atomic bombs after wasting the first one for the Trinity Test but the rest will not come in until last August 1945. Is that ok with you? XXzoonamiXX (talk) 02:58, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
No, we are not talking about bombs actually available for combat use. They would only be so after the 1st Special Ordnance Sq assembled them. So when we talk about bomb availability, we mean components to make them: cores, initiators, detonators and assemblies. Hawkeye7 (talk) 10:01, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
Any information regarding the cores and stuff would you like to give me in addition to the combat bombs? Otherwise, I might screw up.XXzoonamiXX (talk) 18:49, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Can you answer me please? XXzoonamiXX (talk) 18:57, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
What more do we need tyo add? We already say: Groves expected to have another atomic bomb ready for use on August 19, with three more in September and a further three in October.[187] On August 10, he sent a memorandum to Marshall in which he wrote that "the next bomb ... should be ready for delivery on the first suitable weather after 17 or 18 August."' WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Stop it...

You are out of control with your changing articles to Australian English. This page is not Australian in any way; there was no Australian involvement at all. If you change it back, I'll have to report you for vandalism. Magus732 (talk) 06:10, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

By the way, threatening me in an edit summary is very dumb; everyone can see what you wrote. Magus732 (talk) 06:16, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
I created the article back in 2009. It is about an action on Australian territory. I'm sorry you feel I was threatening. The English cannot be changed now even if we agreed. Hawkeye7 (talk) 06:51, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
Actually, you are wrong. Just because you wrote it, that means nothing. Also, it doesn't matter where an article's subject matter takes place; it matters who the major players are. There is no tie to Australia on that page. And it can be changed by a simple consensus vote, which would undoubtedly end up with American English being selected. So I'm asking you once more to stop changing this page. Magus732 (talk) 17:26, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
Using a misleading edit summary in your edit where you changed the variety of English used doesn't help your case. As a US operation conducted on what was Australian territory at the time, either variety of English can be used here, and it doesn't make a great deal of difference really given that only a handful of words appear to be affected (if I'd written this article I would have used US English, but there's nothing intrinsically wrong with Australian English here). I'm surprised that there's no discussion at Talk:Landing on Emirau given that a few editors are now involved. Nick-D (talk) 23:16, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
When I wrote the article on the Admiralty Islands campaign, I used a mixture of US and Australian English. This was historically accurate, but the proofreading editors wanted a choice to be made. So after a brief discussion we settled on Australian English. When I created the Landing on Emirau I conformed to that. Hawkeye7 (talk) 01:59, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Good luck! DYK and QPQ

Hi Hawkeye. Thank you for approving the DYK for Landing at ANZAC Cove, and also for your note about QPQ.

I've been copy-editing Jim Sweeney's work for several years now (with a large break in between), and these days I copyedit and nominate the articles, while he actually writes the articles. It's a fantastic thing to be able to help with that, and it's also great that he puts in the much greater effort needed to research and expand the article in the first place.

On our first collaboration in 2013 (after a long hiatus), I told Jim that I would be submitting the article for DYK because it was eligible as a GA. He said that he had given up on DYK previously after the rules kept changing. I had forgotten that he had used DYK previously.

When I first submitted Jim's 2013 work to DYK, I did a QPQ review because it seemed obvious that the rules required me to do so.

The reviewer then corrected me by saying "unnecessary QPQ done".

So I stopped doing QPQ reviews.

From your comment, I think that it's an open question as to whether new nominations require QPQ reviews or not. Personally, I've always been more comfortable with doing one review for each nomination (regardless of who created or expanded or improved the article), so from now on I will be doing that.

(I've probably reviewed several dozen DYK nominations, and only ever nominated less than two dozen, but that's a minor detail.) --Demiurge1000 (talk) 23:34, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Feeling abandoned and seeking advice

Please reply about this, either here or on my talk page. On a good note, amazing stats of the last two days inspire me to get this FAC show on the road. Before you reply to me, please see the 2014 talk threads. A lot has happened since the A-class review. I've run out of ideas and feel painted into a corner. Multiple people started to help and then just abandoned in mid-stream, most likely because this was not their priority. I have no desire to get between personalities - I just want to get this passed at FAC. I've never been through the FAC process. Can you help either with editing or with something constructive? I have the feeling posting about this once more on the MH talk page might be something folks over there are tired of reading about. — Maile (talk) 16:53, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

No worries. FAC can be scary and a bit of a gauntlet. It's also kind of depressing when others show little interest. I have an article at FAC right now but cannot drum up the reviewers. What was the sudden spurt in interest in Audie about? Anyhow, I suggest just nominating it. Military career of Audie Murphy is also very good too. You could send it to A-class or GA. (Aside: Does TNG really stand for Texas National Guard? What is the abbreviation of the NG in Tennessee?) Hawkeye7 (talk) 09:49, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. This is what I needed - feedback about whether or not I should take the leap. And I shall. The Military career of Audie Murphy is essentially what made it to A-class when it was in the main article - good idea, I'll submit that as A-class. I've been told the spike in views was due to Social Media. — Maile (talk) 11:18, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. Main Page appearance: Frank Berryman

This is a note to let the main editors of Frank Berryman know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 11, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at present, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 11, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Major General Frank Berryman

Frank Berryman (1894–1981) was an Australian Army general during the Second World War. After serving during the First World War on the Western Front with the field artillery, he spent nearly twenty years as a major. He joined the Second Australian Imperial Force in April 1940 and became chief of staff of the 6th Division, later becoming Commander, Royal Artillery, 7th Division. He commanded "Berry Force" in the Syria–Lebanon campaign before returning to Australia in 1942, where he became chief of staff of the First Army and then Deputy Chief of the General Staff. As chief of staff of New Guinea Force, he was involved with the planning and execution of the Salamaua–Lae campaign and the Huon Peninsula campaign, and in November 1943, he became commander of II Corps, which he led in the Battle of Sio. He was the Australian Army representative at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. After the war, he directed the Army's response to the 1949 Australian coal strike, became the Director General of the 1954 Royal Tour of Elizabeth II, and was Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales. In your comments dismissing the B-status review request you said "Doesn't look like it's been changed much either. Still C class" (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/Assessment/Requests&oldid=603275413). This perplexes me b/c in the span of six years the article has increased from (37,673 bytes), the size when it was assessed and then edited to meet the assessor's objections in 2008 (but not reassessed afaict!!) (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Joachim_Peiper&oldid=215536070), to (74,645 bytes) in its current state.

I'm confused b/c I don't know how you could reasonably say that Joachim Peiper "Doesn't look like it's been changed much..." since 2008, when it obviously has been changed. I think I must be failing to understand something, because your comments in dismissing the request don't seem to reflect the reality of the evolution of the article, and they certainly don't seem to provide useful insight that would help me, an editor new to the subject, make the improvements necessary to merit B-status when all I have to go on is the original 2008 assessment, which never drew a response after the article was edited to address some apparent objections of the initial reviewer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Joachim_Peiper/Comments).

Like I said, I'm confused here and fear I may have misunderstood something, especially because I just made a big effort to improve significantly the article lead (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Joachim_Peiper&oldid=603203176) - although in fairness, I only NOTED that improvement on the talk page this morning, and the section I'd started by saying I thought the lead was too short has only now been struck to show that's no longer the case. But otherwise, I don't know what I missing and want to understand.

So I would appreciate it if you could help me to understand the situation better so that I can contribute more effectively by understanding more clearly how these administrative processes work. Thanks for your time! JDanek007Talk 09:00, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

It's really quite straightforward. The B class assessment is a mechanical process based on a simple five-point checklist. And the problem with the article last time it was assessed (which was on 6 June 2013 - it was upgraded from Start to C) was not the degree of coverage, which I consider more than sufficient for a B class article but the fact that it was not fully referenced (point B1). It still isn't fully referenced so it is still a C. The reality is that for the article to progress, you have to either dig up references covering all the unsourced material or remove it. There are already a few {{citation required}} tags but not all the unsourced material is tagged. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:53, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Ahh, OK! That makes so much more sense now! I was misled by the prominence given to the " This article has an assessment summary page." link on the talk page, which I thought was related to the only instance the article was ever reviewed - hence why I stated 2008. I really appreciate your clarifying this for me, Hawkeye7! And just out of curiousity, is there a special place one goes to to find out when an article was last assessed by Military History project? I am, of course, feeling a little foolish still for thinking J.P. article hand't been assessed since 2008, but wasn't aware of how to determine when the last time actually was. Cheers!! JDanek007Talk 18:51, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
There's no special place I'm afraid until the article reaches GA level. An article history section with then be added to the talk page. I found out by looking at the talk page change history. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:49, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
OK, good to know. Thanks again! You've been a great help and a swell Wikipedia pal. Cheers! JDanek007Talk 20:52, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Jan to Mar 14 Military History reviews

Military history service award
By order of the Military history WikiProject coordinators, for your devoted contributions to the WikiProject's Peer, Good Article, A-Class and Featured Article reviews for the period January–March 2014, I am delighted to award you the Military history WikiProject One-Stripe award. During this period you undertook 3 reviews. Hi Hawkeye,

As promised at the WMAU meeting, I've had a bit of a look over Australia at the 2014 Winter Paralympics to assist with the GA review. I don't want to formally review it myself, as having been involved in the Paralympic collaboration I might be considered to have a COI, but hopefully these comments will be helpful.

  • In the "Team Support" quasi-section, some positions are introduced with a colon, others with a dash. This could be made more consistent, or ideally converted into prose.
  • The summary section looks a bit out of place, as it's essentially a reduplication of the lead paragraph (and not a usual feature of WP articles)
  • The article could benefit from some photographs or other images.

Other than the above, it's fairly solid and I don't think it should have any problem passing a GA review =). Lankiveil (speak to me) 11:55, 4 May 2014 (UTC).

  • We only got one photograph at the games. I hope that the APC will release some more. I did not think that the international brigade would have any interest in Australian athletes, but the outcome was disappointing even in that regard. We did the best we could, but we have to send someone (me! me! me!) to Rio. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:59, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

I started reading and I quickly came to one of those points that always bothers me in articles but are sometimes unavoidable, where it's pretty clear the year is not known so the text says "later" or "soon thereafter" and so on. In short, I started looking for a source for the timing of Tibbets' move to Miami and came across the book Seven Hours to Zero with the info and used it to source that tidbit. It seems to me the book has lots of relevant information you might want to see for this article. Since I was able to download the book (in a manner not easy to duplicate), I wanted to know if you wanted a copy. Shoot me an email and I'll forward it. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:50, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I like the Wikipedia articles to have dates as accurate as possible, in order to make it easier for kids to paraphrase the text. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:05, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. Good luck! FA congratulations again...

Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Silverplate to FA status recently. I know you know all about WP:TFAR and the "pending" list, so this is just a reminder to use them as and when suits you.
You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates similar to those used for DYK suggestions. Please consider nominating an article, or commenting on an existing nomination, and leaving some feedback on your experience. Thank you. BencherliteTalk 09:12, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Hawkeye7, why did you just promote this? The latest icon there is the slash, Vensatry makes a comment about the new hook which isn't a whole-review tick by any means, and there's nothing there to indicate that the article has been sufficiently corrected to address the issues I raised. Given that there are three dozen approved articles, why pick one that wasn't? BlueMoonset (talk) 17:35, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

  • I've been away for a few days, and missed that this was promoted and ran back on the 23rd. The question, however, still remains. I've only just now adjusted some issues with the article; it's a shame that they remained when it ran. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:38, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
My apologies. It can be hard to find seven hooks even when there are three dozen nominally available. I was looking for a non-picture, non-biographical hook. The slash referred only to the hook, and that problem seemed resolved. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:55, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

@Piotrus:, thanks for pinging me. Leclerc received II class Virtuti (Commander's Cross) (along with Jean de Lattre de Tassigny and Pierre Koenig). It was pretty easy to figure out BTW as top three classes are usually awarded per rank, that is I class for Marshals and C-i-C's, II class for divisional commanding officers, III class for other officers. I added my source to the article. //Halibutt 12:19, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I was just trying to note on this template that the reviewer can't approve his own (ALT1) hook, when you promoted it to Prep 4. Could you return it to the queue and use something else? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:18, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Done, but I don't understand. The reviewer hasn't approved his own hook. Skr15081997 nominated it and Hybernator approved it. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:23, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Hybernator suggested ALT1 in this unsigned post. Yoninah (talk) 22:30, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Hawkeye7, I'll let you pull this one back as it's an error: the most recent icon is my slash, and this nomination is far from settled. If you feel it should be approved, you're welcome to do that (and specify the approved hook) and wait for someone else to promote it, but not promote an unapproved one. If the last icon isn't a tick, you shouldn't be promoting. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:51, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Put a tick on it then. Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:03, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
I frankly think at this point it needs an experienced admin, given the extensive controversy surrounding it, to approve the nomination. The only reason I intervened when I did was that an unsupported, inaccurate hook that the nominator had objected to for those reasons had just been approved, and clearly shouldn't have been. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:18, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
I've posted a request for closure. Cannot ask for an admin closure as the tools are not required. Hawkeye7 (talk) 01:49, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

DYK hook

Hello Hawkeye. Regarding the hook for Paul Palaiologos Tagaris, rather than ALT1 which has been imported in Prep4, both the reviewer Surtsicna and I feel that ALT2: "... that Paul Palaiologos Tagaris was an Orthodox monk and impostor, who at one point claimed to be the Patriarch of Jerusalem, and even managed to be named Latin Patriarch of Constantinople by the Pope?" is better, as it is both "catchier" and summarizes the article in its essence. Regards, Constantine 09:21, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

You made it hard to find ALT2 by embedding it in the discussion. Switched the hooks. Hawkeye7 (talk) 09:42, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello Hawkeye7. I saw this DYK hook in the queue "that long hair was once banned in Singapore?" and it's slightly misleading because the article said that it was only for men but the hook does not. BencherliteTalk 23:25, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

I have specific dates in mind for these two. 11 March 2015 would have been Vannevar Bush's 125th birthday; and 6 August 2015 is the 70th anniversary of Paul Tibbets's famous mission. Hawkeye7 (talk) 01:14, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

American Biographies

Can you point to the part of MOSNUM that says that biographies about US citizens should use DMY. All I see is that articles on Modern US military sometimes use MDY. Nothing about biographies. If that was the case then all the other biographies would use DMY, but they do not. Only a very slim handful do. Better to rectify this situation by unifying all the dates to MDY in the biography articles since the articles are not military articles. JOJ Hutton 19:43, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Articles on the modern (20th and 21st century) US military normally use DMY. Consistency between articles of a similar category is not sought, as categories overlap. Changing the date format of an article is absolutely prohibited. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:51, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
Changing date formats IS NOT absolutely prohibited, especially when they are using the incorrect date format. They can be corrected if need be. That said, biographies are not Modern military articles. They are just that, biographies. Articles on certain military units and battles are military specific. Biographies are not. JOJ Hutton 21:49, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
Military articles are all those which fall under Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history and include Military personnel, including both leaders and common soldiers, as well as other people involved in military affairs. Per WP:DATERET: The date format chosen by the first major contributor in the early stages of an article should continue to be used, unless there is reason to change it based on strong national ties to the topic or consensus on article talk. And WP:STRONGNAT says articles on the modern US military use day before month, in accordance with military usage. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:05, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
I'm well aware of the wording of the guideline, but I think its very important to remember that biographies are not military specific. They carry the weight of many aspects of a persons life. Simply because some biographies fall under the wide umbrella of the military project does not automatically infer that they are "modern US military" articles. These few, final holdout, articles should be changed to reflect the citizenship of the subjects entire life and not one aspect of it, per WP:STRONGNAT.--JOJ Hutton 18:12, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
  1. If you want to change a particular page, you need to seek consensus on its talk page.
  2. If you want to change WP:STRONGNAT, you will need to seek consensus at the Village Pump.
  3. If you want to change the format used in the United States away from DMY, you need to talk to the Pentagon.
Which military biographies have you written btw? Hawkeye7 (talk) 10:30, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Mustang wine

Hi. I am new to DYK. Do you know why Did you know nominations/Mustang wine has been removed from its talkpage? Where may I follow the process now please?Zigzig20s (talk) 03:12, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Nothing is wrong. I promoted it into a prep area, but an admin has moved in into Queue 2 to replace another hook that was pulled. Hawkeye7 (talk) 04:59, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Is the rest of the process hidden from view?Zigzig20s (talk) 05:49, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
No. You can watch it all happen at Template:Did you know/Queue. The hook is currently in Queue 2. You will receive a notification message when it runs. Hawkeye7 (talk) 07:43, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Need a favor

DYK - looks to me like you picked the lead hook in Prep 4, the one about Ben Essing. If my calculations are correct, that set will hit the main page on June 20, 8:35 a.m. New York time, which would be 7:35 a.m. Texas time. Wouldn't that be a more logical place for the Audie Murphy hook (hopefully, the lead) in the special holding area for June 20? The next set would be evening in Texas. This is assuming rotation schedules aren't changed before then. — Maile (talk) 21:11, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 June newsletter

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to Florida 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. Good luck! Help with article.

Hi Hawkeye, I had recently created an article about a Paralympic athlete called Mac Marcoux. I wasn't planning on writing much about it, but after finding extensive amount of references about the athlete, I decided that the article has to have a better fate than an untouched stub in the abyss of unread Wikipedia articles. I figured you had lots of experience improving articles to GA and FA including some paralympic athletes. I'm more worried about the broad in coverage aspect. Can you read over it and see if any information is missing? Also, can you grade it too? (at the talk page). Thanks, TheQ Editor (Talk) 00:45, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

I've given it a copy edit like I did for the Australian Paralympians. Added a little bit of extra information about La Molina. Coverage is fine. Added some more links. Also some categories and changed the infobox to Canadian red (revert this if you don't like). Tidied up the references by adding the required publisher tag. Graded it as a B and added two more projects. Also approved the DYK nomination. You can nominate it for GA now. Well done! Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:21, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Heike Friedrich (wheelchair basketball) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. The article Heike Friedrich (wheelchair basketball) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Heike Friedrich (wheelchair basketball) for things which need to be addressed. Prep

Thanks for DYK prep. I suggest to spread the two for 15 August in two sets, to avoid two of my hooks in the same set, two date-related in the same, and (too) many singers in a row. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:33, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

This was not overlooked, but one is about a statue and the other is about a singer. With the change to a 12-hour cycle it will run from 09:34 to 21:34 in Germany, so I did not regard the use of a second set as being much of an option. When more hooks become available I may separate them. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:41, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I see that you've blanked the redirect Unity of command. I've reverted the blanking to restore the redirect for now. If this was done for a particular purpose, feel free to revert it but with an adequate reason in the edit summary. Thanks. KJ Discuss? 23:40, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

But you have no idea what that purpose was. Neither do I. Here is what links to it:
None of these wants to link to the redirect article. So we have to either remove the redirect, or edit all the articles to remove the link. What was your reason for reverting the change? Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:52, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
  2. Scotland Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
  3. Nepal Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
  4. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
  6. Florida 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
  7. Colorado Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
  8. Canada Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Herm Matty.007 (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), United States WikiRedactor (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), Portugal Prism (submissions) and Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hello — Thanks for your extensive work on the Richard Hamming article. There might be a rough edge still to polish, though. Could you take a second look at your edit here? It leaves this sentence: “His wife Wanda soon followed, … working fior Bethe and the day, including and Edward Teller.” I'm not exactly sure how many of the physicists in the previous text you wanted to include in the revised sentence, so I haven't tried to complete this myself.  Unician   01:36, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for that! I'm still working on the article. Hawkeye7 (talk) 03:03, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi mate, just verifying entries in the monthly contest... You assessed this one as B on 31 July and then C the day after -- can you let me know if it was a typo the day before, or change of mind afterwards, or what, 'cos Lineagegeek would like to claim 3 points for climbing from nil assessment to C but that only makes sense to me if the B-Class assessment in between was finger trouble or something... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 11:02, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

It was. As Lineagegeek pointed out, I assessed two of his articles at once and got the assessments the wrong way around. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:07, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Great, tks. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 13:23, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Hawkeye7, You made a mistake and wrongfully killed this DYK without notice. The artist is plainly notable. WP:GNG. You even promoted it, and then undid it. Please see mmy comments and reopen the discussion. 11:12, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

The artist does plainly pass WP:GNG and WP:ARTIST, but the article is up for deletion. It would be most helpful if you expressed your opinion on the deletion page, where you will see my comments on the matter. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:20, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Done that. I've done all I can do. But killing the nomination for a DYK is still wrong. This should be a WP:Snow decision on the notability "issue". 7&6=thirteen () 11:32, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

A-Class bot

Hi Hawkeye, PM seemed to set the bot in motion on Talk:Les Holden a few days ago but nothing's happened -- was something missed? Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 14:40, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

An error on the nominations page was preventing the MilHistBot from finding the talk page. I have corrected it, and it the page has been promoted. I'll see if I can get the Bot to handle errors like that. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:24, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Okay, the Bot is now smarter and can handle that situation. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:35, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
  • Hey Hawkeye, I think the bot's fantastic, so I hope you don't mind if I make a few minor suggestions. It would probably be a good idea to blue-link its talk page, even if it's just a redirect to yours; it probably shouldn't mark its edits as a minor—strictly speaking, they're not 'minor' edits, and some people have their preferences set to omit bot edits marked as minor from their watchlists; and it's probably worth filling in the tasks parameter in the infobox on its userpage so that passers-by have some idea what it does. But like I say, I think it's fantastic—it saves so much time that coords can now spend elsewhere! All the best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:13, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
  • Tks for taking care of the Holden situation, mate. I agree with Harry, the bot is great, one of the best things anyone's done for the project. Of course no good deed goes unpunished and I have to admit I've been wondering how you'd feel about taking on automating the FAC closing instructions, since we haven't had a really reliable script since the demise of Gimmebot. Note that someone did volunteer in July to try and push this through but nothing seems to have happened since then. My point here is to sound you out on whether you might be interested and if so to perhaps just head off any other (slow-moving) attempts. Of course I can't offer anything like leave to run more than one solo FAC at a time (!) but I'm sure you'd gain the eternal gratitude of the FAC community... ;-) Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 01:14, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
    • I was the one who volunteered, but I was never able to get in contact with the developer, and without the password, could not run the GimmeBot. I'll have another look at it. Hawkeye7 (talk) 03:15, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

FA bot tasks

I saw your comment at WT:FAC about getting a replacement FAC bot up and running. Might you be interested in taking over some or all of the tasks of UcuchaBot? The code is here - it's all gibberish to me but you might understand it! I have a particular interest in the TFA-related tasks listed on the bot's user page (tasks 1 and 4) but bot tasks 2 and 3 might fit in nicely with your FAC work anyway. Yours, BencherliteTalk 23:15, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Just butting in: Bench, Ucucha has been active lately commenting on an open FAC so might be best in the first instance to ask him if he can fix this issue -- though Hawkeye as a backup is a good idea too... ;-) Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 23:29, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
I asked him by email a few weeks ago and the gist of the reply was that, in this post-Toolserver world, he needs to find a new server. But the bot has been inactive for months and getting a back-up is now more of a priority. Boring jobs like adding |maindate= to {{Article history}} or notifying FAC nominators of a TFA selection are currently being split between me and Brianboulton/Tim riley, and all three of us have better things to do! WP:FANMP is now very out of date and I'm just glad that I don't rely on it personally... BencherliteTalk 23:34, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

This is excellent news, well done Hawkeye7! One of my favourite articles for some reason (I do like to quote from it).
Do bear in mind, though, that the Table of Contents currently has two Explosions, whereas the Trinity test itself only really involved one. I tried to think of an appropriate level 2 heading to replace the first one, but couldn't quite think of an appropriate one. This should probably be fixed.
As a new GA, is this eligible for DYK? All manner of fascinating hooks could be found. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 17:17, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

MilHistBot

I think getting a working bot for FAC (and hopefully all of the FA sub-forums) is a great thing. You should be commended for getting it going this far. However, I have a slightly uncomfortable feeling with the bot that's doing the automated tasks for the FA process bearing the name of a prominent WikiProject. People could misconstrue things very easily. I was wondering if you could set up a second bot account under a different name, say FAbot, so that editors don't assume MILHIST is now running the FA process, or that the project has some sort of favoritism. I'm not saying that it is/does, but I think it might just be a good idea to prevent misunderstandings ahead of time. Imzadi 1979  18:40, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

DYK Stats Question

Not sure if you recall, but you reviewed the article I started and DYK'ed about a month ago. But it made it to the front page and got about 15,421 views in the time it was up there. Should it be added to the statistics page as it mentions on the template if its necessary? Or is there a whole different process to that. Apologies as I am confused and new as to how the DYK process works. --Acetotyce (talk) 00:23, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

I am sorry your article got caught up in this mess. If we can get the images sorted out and kept, I'd prefer that, but the image review never actually finished, so...

You may not know this, but there was a badly mis-documented image as part of TFA on the main page a few weeks ago, so I'm a bit concerned about getting these things right, since the checks don't happen outside of FAC, from what I can tell. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:27, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Hawkeye, two things. There is a grammatical problem with the hook--it needs to say "...was featured". I hope this can be fixed. Second, though, I'm having doubts as to whether it's appropriate to run this on the front page, image and all, and I'm going to ask Crisco about it. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:50, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

I didn't think that the sentence was ungrammatical (although it was a bit long) and the painting is a WP:Featured Picture. Hawkeye7 (talk) 02:58, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Ask Cris if he can promote the next prep area. Hawkeye7 (talk) 03:01, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Well, "September Morn featured on cigar bands" is certainly not common parlance. I saw that Crisco intended to pull the image (there's a note on his talk page). I'll ping him, Crisco 1492, about this prep area thing. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:08, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Brian Brushwood DYK

Hi Hawkeye7, I notice you've moved the Brian Brushwood DYK nom to the prep area, but I wanted to point out that I had approved ALT1, not the original hook. Could you fix this? -Thibbs (talk) 11:27, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Hmmm. The original was not struck, and I read it to mean the opposite. Switched to ALT1 hook. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:47, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate it. Sorry for not overstriking. I've only done a few DYK approvals so it's good to know that the proper way to flag this for clerks/admins is to overstrike all but the approved hook. Shamefully this isn't the first time I've failed to properly express my wishes as an approving editor. In another case I had approved some poor guy's request to run the DYK on a certain date but it ended up getting scooped up some night I wasn't watching and run about a week ahead of schedule. Can you share any insights on how I should have flagged that approval for the reviewing admin? Should I have put the date-related instructions in bold next to my approval tick? Or should I have manually moved the approved nom to the special holding area? -Thibbs (talk) 11:53, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

No personal attacks (your comments at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case)

Please stop. If you continue to make personal attacks on other people, you will be blocked for disruption. Comment on content, not on other contributors or people. Thank you.

Baseless accusations of vandalism, point disruptions, are personal attacks. Most of the rest of your comments were simply wrong. Please, if you feel so strongly about it, start a discussion on an appropriate noticeboard. Start your own arbcom case for all I care. Perhaps next time include the aspect that you are the editor that promoted that hook, evidence of your carelessness (you are quite often the promotor of these problematic hooks, actually). It might explain to the arbs why you make such a heated statement which turns out to be mostly hot air, sadly. Fram (talk) 09:21, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Without being familiar with the background here, this warning seems rather over the top - Hawkeye's criticisms are strong, but are a critique of your contributions rather than you as a person. HJ Mitchell's criticisms are much stronger, but you haven't threatened him with being blocked... Nick-D (talk) 10:02, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
It's the standard NPA warning. "Accusations about personal behavior that lack evidence. Serious accusations require serious evidence. Evidence often takes the form of diffs and links presented on wiki." is one of the definitions of PAs given. Accusing people of vandalizing the main page (I removed a hook from the DYK section; even if I had been wrong in doing so, it would never have been vandalism which has a completely different definition) and of abuse of admin privileges for issuing a warning, is not done. HJMitchell has gotten his warning last week already[71]... Fram (talk) 12:09, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Looks like just more intimidation tactics to me. Just ignore it, Hawkeye. Fram, perhaps you might like to go away and think about why you rub so many good editors up the wrong way and whether that's actually likely to accomplish what you want. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:58, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
No. What I want is people who take DYK seriously. If people don't like to be confronted with what they do wrong, there is a simple solution: improve your quality. The other option, letting error after error be presented on the main page, is not acceptable. If that rubs people the wrong way, going as far as calling the removal of a hook that was not supported by its article "vandalism", warranting an immediate desysop, then I don't think the problem lies with me but with those people who seem to have their priorities wrong. If "good editors" get so worked up when a problem gets detected, then they should increase the quality of their DYK work or stay away from DYK (or help in other ways, but not reviewing or promoting hooks or creating queues). Fram (talk) 17:26, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

FACBot

Hi mate, just looking at the FACBot -- tks so much for getting this up and running. Couple of things, related to steps and timestamp... As I said at WT:FAC a while back, and Graham agreed, the coordinators transclude the FAC nomination page into the Featured Log (or the Archived Nominations) when we promote (or archive) the review. The bot should then take the date/time the template was transcluded to the log (or it could simply take the date/time the coordinator put the FACClosed template onto the FAC page -- if we're doing our job properly these will always be the same day, usually within a short time of each other). The FACBot won’t need to add the FAC page to the Featured Log or Archived Nominations page as it will already be there courtesy of the coords. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 23:38, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

I noticed that the archiving code was still there and have removed it. It wouldn't have had any effect if the nominations were archived. Are we talking about the date/time to be used on the nomination page, or the talk page? Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:54, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Heh, on re-reading I probably could have clarified that... I'm talking primarily about the timestamp used at the top of the nomination page, i.e. "The article was promoted by <coordinator hh:mm, dd Mmm yyyy> (UTC)". This hasn't exactly been consistent over the years. Sometimes it seems to have been the timestamp of when the review page was removed from WP:FAC and transcluded to the Featured Log or Archived Nominations, and sometimes it's been when the bot went through and did its housekeeping chores, often a few days later. I've always considered the closing time of a FAC (especially for the purposes of people making their next nom after a promotion, or the two-week waiting period after an archived nom commencing) to be when the coordinator puts the FACClosed template onto the review page, so to me it makes sense to use that time in "The article was promoted..." (or "not promoted"). The version of the article linked in Article History should be from that moment too, so the date in Article History should be the same as the date at the top of nomination page. Does that seem to work? Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 13:31, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Graham, pls weigh in if you'd like... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 13:35, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
The diff immediately after the date was also inconsistent. I've chosen to follow your version. The Bot is complaining about Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Little Athletics/archive1, which was closed in September, but which it cannot find on the September archive page. Do you want the Bot to notify you when this happens? Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:01, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi mate, sorry I hadn't responded to this last. I guess it'd be good to be notified about such things. I just wanted to say that the FACBot is looking good, I only see two relatively minor things now: 1) I believe the standard order for Article History on the talk page is ascending chronological, but looking at my own 1SQN, which was just promoted/closed, the FAC entry is above the ACR entry (and of course the GA bot hadn't updated Article History with the relevant GAN either, but I can do that); 2) it'd be great if FACBot could remove the relevant article from the GA list when promoting to FA. Again, Graham, if there's anything you wanted to add... Tks/cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 23:37, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
P.S. Hawkeye, on another subject, did you have the Duffield GAN watchlisted? Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 23:59, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

FACBot and article history

I've noticed something odd about the bot- it lists correct archive date for unsuccessful FAC's, but is faulty with promotion dates of successful ones. For example, it listed ...And Justice For All (album) as promoted on October 20 when it became FA on October 5, and listed William H. Seward that became FA as October 8 as one that was promoted on October 20. Why is that? Snuggums (talk / edits) 03:30, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

This has been corrected. Per the above, the delegates wanted the promotion date used. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:01, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Capitalization

As a preliminary, I see a lot of overcapitalization in USAF unit articles, so my tendency is to reduce it. I don't have an MOS reference for this, so if you have one, I'd appreciate it.

1st Foo Wing (no doubt this is a proper noun and should be capitalized)
The wing did blah. (no doubt in my mind this is a common noun and should not be capitalized, but I've changed a lot of them from "The Wing did blah.")
The 1st wing did blah. (my opinion is that when the title of the wing is not mentioned, it should be treated as a common noun, but who knows? I love consistency, so if you've got an argument that it should be "The 1st Wing did blah.", I'm open to suggestions for prospective edits. --Lineagegeek (talk) 22:22, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
Per MOS:MILTERMS The general rule is that wherever a military term is an accepted proper name, as indicated by consistent capitalization in sources, it should be capitalized. So "the wing" or "a wing" but once you use the ordinal it becomes "4th Wing". Hawkeye7 (talk) 02:01, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

DYK nom

Greetings. You recently passed my DYK nomination for Guatemalan Revolution. Although I had nominated a picture as well, this picture does not appear in the prep area, but there were no comments about it either. I'm new to this process; could you tell me what happened? Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 20:55, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

One hook in seven has an image on the front page, but more than one in seven has an image, so some images are passed over in favour of others. There's usually one or two of these per prep area. Now, the rules say "The first item "hook" should be modified to include (pictured) (or perhaps (pictured, flag of Zdxyrastan) or whatever) in the appropriate place to make the connection to the image". Not doing that increases the odds of the hook being included without the image. But we are flexible. If you have your heart set on the image appearing as well, I can pull the hook from the prep area. And you can correct the hook. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:30, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
I suspected something like that. I do in fact like the image, and would like to make the changes as you described; but I would imagine that the review process after the change would not take long, as the text/information would not actually have changed? Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 22:13, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
The nomination has been moved back from the Prep Area. You need to fix the hooks. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:08, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I've fixed the hook; I used Alt1, per the reviewer's suggestion. Could you take a look? Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 21:58, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Scotland Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

A full list of our prize-winners follows:

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have participated this year. We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. Bot issue

G'day Hawkeye, Milhist bot seems to be doing something strange here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Angevin kings of England. I tried to fix it, but had no luck. Can you please take a look? Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 19:39, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, logged on this morning to find ten notifications (what have I done?!) and eight or nine were MilHistBot re. that ACR... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 21:45, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

FAR bot?

Hey Hawkeye, would it be possible to get a bot to close FARs like it does FACs? Nikkimaria (talk) 16:55, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Yes. I will get onto it. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:59, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Cheers. Nikkimaria (talk) 22:51, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
How do you close a FAR? What is the procedure? Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:55, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
For all reviews: add {{FARClosed}} at the bottom with the appropriate result; move the transcluded review from WP:FAR to the correct section at Wikipedia:Featured article review/archive; add {{FAR top}} and {{Fa bottom}} (substed and with correct result) to the review page; update the ArticleHistory.
For delisted reviews only: remove the star from the article; remove the article from WP:FA and add to corresponding section in WP:FFA (updating total counts); blank all WikiProject assessments.
The first step ({{FARClosed}}) is the official decision; I'm not sure how much of the rest could/should be handled by bot. Nikkimaria (talk) 07:42, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

The steps Gimmebot used to follow are outlined at User:Maralia/FA bot#FAR closing. The only significant differences from FAC processing are that FAR doesn't keep separate archive logs for kept vs removed FARs (they are all logged to Wikipedia:Featured article review/archive, in Kept or Removed subsections), and that FA quality assessments are to be removed if the article loses FA. Otherwise, the steps are identical: add archive tags to the FAR page, remove the article star if appropriate, remove the FAR template, and update articlehistory.

My $0.02: I think the FAR delegates need to continue both adding the FARClosed tag and moving the FAR from WP:FAR to the log. The FARClosed tag is meant to be a status notification for the nominator and reviewers; it's not an ideal signifier for the bot to take action because FARClosed remains on many closed FARs, too, so the move to the log is probably (as with at FAC) the best thing for the bot to key off. Adding removed articles at WP:FFA should probably remain a human task, too, since 'adding to the corresponding section' involves a judgment call on the topic (if memory serves, Gimmebot did not do this either, although it did update links to renamed pages there). Maralia (talk) 04:12, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Milhistbot glitch?

G'day Hawk. I see Milhistbot has re-added WikiProject Military history/Assessment/No. 77 Squadron RAAF to the ACRs, even though it removed it yesterday on promotion. It's also removed German-Partisan negotiations, but hasn't done the other jobs like adding to the Showcase and updating the ACM tally. What's going on there? Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 00:50, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Fixed. The Bot has now passed both articles correctly. Hawkeye7 (talk) 04:57, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Robert Risson

Hi Hawkeye7,

Thanks for adding info to the article Robert Risson, it's nice to have someone with more military history knowledge than I fix it up. I think I did reasonably well finding what I could, but you've certainly filled it out. I have two questions, if I may. The first relates to the infobox, the additions you made make it much larger (vertically), do you think we could compress some of the info or move it into the article? I am deferring to your wisdom here, but thought at the very least we could either remove the honours listed in the titles pre/post nominals, or compress the honours to abbreviations as a hlist; I was also wondering if the extensive list of 'Commands held' would be better presented as a table, with dates added, in the 'Military career'. I don't know if these ideas would go against MOS, so will leave it with you, and not make any change without prior consensus. The second question is: how far do you think this is from GA status? You have improved a large number of articles to GA, so I figure you'd know far better than I, and I'd rather not waste time nominating something that doesn't have a hope of getting passed (I do recognise that the MMTB bit would need to be filled out a bit).

Thanks again for helping improve the article, and for your time and consideration regarding the above, ColonialGrid (talk) 12:20, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

I was very impressed with article. Well done! Although it turned out that I had information on Risson here (and kept finding more and more up to the point where I had to stop and go to work), I did not know anything about him before. It was quite a delight to read the article and find out more. How long have you been writing Wikipedia articles? As to the Infobox, I think it is fine as it is; it is not too long. I recommend taking the article to GA, or to our A Class review. I have re-graded it a B-class article. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:32, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! That's really nice and gratifying to hear (especially from an expert in milhist!). Risson really is an interesting character, I know him more from the tramway aspect, so I was also rather surprised to find out so much about him (beyond saving Melbourne's trams). I've been editing sporadically since the mid 2000s, but did most of my editing during 12/13, I haven't edited much at all in the last year (one or two little things), and Risson and Hector Hercules Bell are the first full articles I've written; the rest was rather minor. I figured that being on break from uni I should keep my mind working by writing some articles. Fair call on the infobox length. I will nominate it in the next couple of days, I think the MMTB stuff should be expanded a bit first. Thanks for the additions and support (and the re-grade). I hope our editing paths cross again in the future. ColonialGrid (talk) 02:45, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi

Take a look at Template:Did you know nominations/Pettakere cave. I think the reviewer is reviewing the article like it is a GA nom instead of a DYK nom. The article is definitely ready for DYK per my own expertise from numerous DYKs in the last few year. But frankly I can not be bothered with responding to the user anymore in this particular DYK. I have been nothing but polite to the user and only get "harsh words" thrown back.. I will leave it up to someone else to finish the review. I have done what I can, and more. I have no problem with a review overall itself, but the tone of this reviewer. --BabbaQ (talk) 00:41, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

comment in FAC Smyth report?

Hello Hawkeye7, I am curious, what did you mean by "I can read!" in your latest FAC response? If the criticized points were coming across too harshly, I am sorry - it certainly wasn't intentional. It's often unclear in reviews, if a nominator (in general) just overlooked a problem or needs more information to solve it. So I tend to be more detailed than necessary at times and often repeat information and guidelines, that are probably already known and redundant for more experienced nominators. Just wanted to clear that up, if necessary - good luck with your nomination. GermanJoe (talk) 13:42, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

Oh. I didn't mean it like that. I just meant that there is no need to translate. I seem to have gotten distracted and not finished what I was writing. My bad. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:23, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

  • We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
  • In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
  • The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Timeline of the Manhattan Project

Hi Hawkeye,

Congratulations on getting another article related to the Manhattan Project up on the main page! You've done some impressive work in this area. I noticed that all of the articles about the operations of the Manhattan Project are either at good or featured status, and that the main timeline is at featured list status. Considering that there are no other articles about events in the timeline, what would you think of nominating the timeline article as the head article of a good topic, with the operations articles as the rest of the topic? Neelix (talk) 23:18, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

The current state of the Manhattan Project articles is here. The Smyth Report is current at FAC, and the Trinity nuclear test is slated to follow it so Trinity can run on its 70th anniversary in July 2015. Six articles are currently at GAN, but none of these are currently listed with the main group. Word to the wise

I'm not really doing reviews right now. But I ran the Dup Detector on two aricles in one nomination, and there was only one problem. Thought you might like a head start in taking care of it: Here. If you can't hook that up, it's US Army source and prose that existed before you edited. — Maile (talk) 21:31, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

Yes, it was originally a copy of the US Army source before I expanded it. However the article still contains the disclaimer: This article incorporates public domain material from the United States Army document "Trinity Site History: A copy of the brochure given to site visitors". Permission request

Do I have your permission to write an article on Operation Paperclip: The Secret Intelligence Program that brought Nazi Scientists to America? I just read your review of it in the Military History newsletter and thought it sounded really interesting and there appears to be a plethora of reliable source reviews of it that I can use to make the article. I just didn't know if you were planning on writing such an article yourself or not. I don't want to scoop something out from under you. SilverserenC 04:06, 25 December 2014 (UTC)

An article on the book? Sure, go right ahead. I had no intention of writing one. Hawkeye7 (talk) 04:39, 25 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bronze Star Medal, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Stars and Stripes. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Help bringing Battle of Malvern Hill to FA

Howdy Hawkeye7,

I left a message on Drmies talk page regarding help to bring Battle of Malvern Hill to featured article status and the response I got (from him and Nikkimaria) was to come to the MilHist wikiproject. You're a coordinator with incredible experience in the field of military history on Wikipedia. I'm already a member of MilHist in the area of the American Civil War and I've created several articles on the topic. However, this is my first FA. I've gotten Benjamin Hardin Helm to GA and are looking forward to get two more articles to GA. However, the criteria for FA is extremely more complicated and intricate than GA. Therefore, for my first FA, I'd like an experienced person to help me spruce up the prose, etc. You seem to be uber-qualified (Damn, do you live on the featured article and good article pages) and I'd really like it if you can help me. I've started the expansion here: User:Ceradon/Malvern Hill. Thank you in advance. Cheers, --ceradon (talkcontribs) 06:37, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

Two questions concerning milhistbot

I have a pair of questions for you concerning milhistbot: could the bot also track the nominators of successful A-class articles and list those contributors to help us track editors eligible for our various A-Class Medals, and if so could the bot also track FA/GA nominations in the same way? TomStar81 (Talk) 04:19, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

The Bot works out who the nominators are, and updates the A-class medal tracking accordingly. When it gets to three, it scrubs that and creates an appropriate A-class medal nomination (oak leaves, swords or diamonds). It could track FACs and GAs too, but there are no medals for these. Hawkeye7 (talk) 04:33, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
I know, how about tracking ACR/PR/FAC reviewers for the content review awards (if you haven't anything better to do)...?! ;-) Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 05:03, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
Seriously, tracking ACR/PR/FLC/FAC/GA reviewers for the awards is the most time-consuming job we currently have (now that ACRs and the Announcements page are sorted thanks to Milhistbot). ;-) Regards, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 05:10, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
That's exactly what I was going to ask: can we track the entire milhist related PR/GAN/ACR/FAC/FPC material so we can rest assured that our members get the recognition they deserve, becuase quite frankly, doing by hand (like I'm doing now) is a royal pain in my fingers. And eyes. And back. And other associated body parts that get heavily taxed during such extended times on Wikipedia. But not the ears, because I've got an outstanding hour and change collection of classical music conducted by the Philadelphia Symphony that I listen to for such occasions, and it makes these tedious works just so much easier :) TomStar81 (Talk) 06:38, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, we can do that. Hawkeye7 (talk) 07:13, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Nice work, but why change the reference format when WP:Retain should apply? FWiW Bzuk (talk) 08:19, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

As to maintaining reference formats, there is no directive that citation or bibliographical templates are the "standard", neither being sanctioned nor accepted as such. "fixing the references" as was noted, is not necessary nor mandated; this change merely represents your chosen use of a style guide. Over the last 10 years, the Wiki editors who created the templates, left in many "bugs" including that of second authors, that interfere with the output of the standard formatting that a reader would see. Most of the problems stem from simply the computer dictum of "garbage in, garbage out". The vast majority of wikipedia editors are not trained reference librarians or editors, subsequently, the templates were created as an aid, but many editors are not even aware that a wide range of templates are being employed, nearly all of them written in the APA (American Psychological Association) or simplified variant of it. The APA style guide is widely used in research papers at academic institutions for the Sciences, but the usual style guide for the Humanities and in most publishing, is the MLA (Modern Language Association)/Chicago style for bibliographic notations. Since the vast majority of what I edit is in the Humanities, i.e. history, I tend to use that style guide whenever possible. The Wiki templates do not accommodate the MLA formatting, and although they can be modified to output in MLA, most editors would not be able to make those changes. What can be done is to "scratch catalog" the "tracings" which markup does allow and will format properly. Now, just to assuage your notion that you are dealing with a Luddite, I have been using templates for cataloguing for over 30 years, with the introduction of automation in libraries, where I worked as a reference librarian and later, author and editor for publishing houses. The typical MARc record template, however, was "bullet-proof" and has been in use for decades. Whenever an article has a hodgepodge of referencing problems, it is often easier to institute a consistent style. Using templates may seem like the simple choice, but, in reality, it is often the one issue that is the hardest to correct to output properly. Understanding the MLA and Harvard citation style guides is not for the neophyte or casual editor, so templates will have to suffice. The cataloguing/referencing issue may already be a moot point as I see that the article has been already reverted to a previous version. I would be happy to continue this dialogue, if you choose. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 08:26, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
I wasn't changing the reference format; I was expanding the article and making sure that everything was referenced. The article has more than doubled in size. I retained the language variant as US English per WP:ENGVAR and WP:RETAIN, the date format as MDY per WP:DATERET and the layout per WP:MOSFILM. I thought everything looked the same as before. I am not an editor or a librarian; I am a historian, so I don't use MLA or APA. I use the templates But if it bugs you, you can reformat the references. I never thought you were a neo-Luddite, although I was surprised that "film" is preferred over "movie", as movies are no longer shot on film. I hope we can work together to get the article through GA. Regards. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:21, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
