Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you recently removed maintenance templates from Melissa O'Neil. When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Please see Help:Maintenance template removal for further information on when maintenance templates should or should not be removed. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as your removal of this template has been reverted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. I have put back the tags about needing more sources / unreliable source, as these still apply. I have left your other changes in. Tacyarg (talk) 07:24, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, to say in Melissa O'Neil that "O'Neil deflects or pushes back" is synthesis or original research; see WP:SYNTH or WP:OR. To include this in the article, it would need a source explicitly saying that. I will post a Welcome below with some links about editing Wikipedia, which you may find useful. In particular, the WP:TEAHOUSE is a good place to ask questions and get support. Tacyarg (talk) 20:20, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's not explicitly against policy if ethnicity is what made a person notable. It is fully within policy. Fermentedgrapes (talk) 20:36, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Her ethnicity has absolutely nothing at all to do with her notability. She isn't even fully Chinese as she's half white. Please stop. Policy is extremely clear on the matter. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 20:44, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you seriously going to be racist about this? Fermentedgrapes (talk) 20:44, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity

[edit]

Hello. Please read MOS:ETHNICITY. You'll see that it's explicitly against policy to list someone like Melissa O'Neill as Chinese Canadian rather than just Canadian. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 17:48, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Stop icon You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you make disruptive edits to Wikipedia contrary to the Manual of Style. Just stop ignoring it. It's been explained to you why it's against manual of style. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 20:46, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Its been explained to you why this is not against manual of style. Her ethnicity is notable and you failing to understand "why" does not mean it's okay to haphazardly remove justifiable references. Also, why did you remove categorical tags related to ethnicity? It seems you have a problem with her being Asian because you're making the claim that her being half white makes her less Asian. You are the one who is being racist and disruptive. Stop defending racism and stop threatening me. Fermentedgrapes (talk) 21:02, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing Melissa O'Neil for long-term edit warring to restore contentious information to a BLP.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please review Wikipedia's guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Ponyobons mots 21:06, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please see my message to user JDDJS above. The user is sanctioning me from editing the page because they have a bruised ego. Fermentedgrapes (talk) 21:09, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Continued personal attacks will result in you being blocked from editing altogether instead of from a single article.-- Ponyobons mots 21:11, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sharing information with someone about why their actions can be interpreted as racist and why her ethnicity is notable is an opportunity for education. It is not a personal attack.
Threatening me with a block over this and raising flares is not okay. Fermentedgrapes (talk) 21:19, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"You are the one who is being racist". "The user is sanctioning me from editing the page because they have a bruised ego". You cannot talk about other editors this way. Asking others to edit on your behalf, as you did with C.Fred is also unacceptable.-- Ponyobons mots 21:23, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did not ask C.Fred to edit on my behalf. C.Fred had a question about citations and I provided it for them.
JDDJS removed Melissa O'Neil's Chinese ethnicity in several places including the first line of her page and disregarded it as "not notable" yet she is the first of her ethnicity to win Canadian Idol, star in a police television show and be the romantic lead of that show. Then they claim that she is not Asian enough because she is "half". This is racism and a disregard for representation. It is also a failure to see why "ethnicity" in this case IS notable and should be included on the first line of her page. There are plenty of Canadians who have won Canadian Idol and plenty who have starred in police procedurals as romantic leads. There are not many people who are Chinese or Chinese Canadian who have achieved this.
Failure to see this does not mean that I am wrong and I should not be falsely accused of edit warring. Fermentedgrapes (talk) 21:34, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We have policies and guidelines as to if and when ethnicity should be included in the lead of an article, if at all. Edit warring to restore disputed content to a BLP, which is pretty much all you've done with this account, is a sure-fire way to get blocked. The onus is on you to get consensus for the edit you wish to restore through talk page discussion. The article talk page is still available to you - so use it.-- Ponyobons mots 21:43, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Asking others to edit on your behalf, as you did with C.Fred is also unacceptable."
Wouldn't using the Talk Page be the same thing? Fermentedgrapes (talk) 21:46, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No. You use the talk page to discuss the changes you would like seen made to the article, then see if there is WP:CONSENSUS for the changes. You don't ask others to make edits for you, you discuss the inclusion of the disputed content. See WP:DR.-- Ponyobons mots 21:51, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why are the other person's actions not considered edit warring? Fermentedgrapes (talk) 22:26, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not an admin; I don't have the ability to sanction you. I didn't even request the semiblock. All I did was warn you about the inevitable results of your continued disregard of policy. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 21:14, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your warning contributed to the semi-block. There was zero reason to do that. Fermentedgrapes (talk) 21:19, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I have explained to you, I did not disregard policy. Fermentedgrapes (talk) 21:24, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you actually read MOS:ETHNICITY and still actually believe that you were following policy, then I question if editing Wikipedia is for you. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 21:27, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, ethnicity is relevant to the subject's notability and this fully aligns with policy. Fermentedgrapes (talk) 21:39, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You have an extremely fundamental misunderstanding of MOS:ETHNICITY. Barack Obama starts with American politician, not African American despite him being the first African American president. Margaret Cho doesn't begin with Korean American, despite being one of the first Asian to have a lead on a sitcom. Ethnicity can be mentioned in the first paragraph, but with EXTREMELY few exceptions, it doesn't belong in the first sentence. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 21:53, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is it really necessary to attack and insult my reading comprehension? It's right here: "The opening paragraph should usually provide context for that which made the person notable ... Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless relevant to the subject's notability."
Interesting that you did not mention Barack Obama as not being fully African as he is half white. Yet for Melissa O'Neil, you're so quick to dismiss the Asian part by saying that "She isn't even fully Chinese as she's half white." Why is that? And why did you remove several Categories on her page that are related to ethnicity? Fermentedgrapes (talk) 22:26, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The categories that I removed were redundant. She should not be in Category:Actresses of Chinese descent when she's already in Category:Canadian actresses of Chinese descent JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 00:33, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
