MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear DaGizza,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 02:46, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

[edit]

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Invitation to the April Wikification Drive

[edit]
[edit]

Hi, I'm following up on a comment you made on Wikipedia_talk:Hinduism-related_topics_notice_board/Archive_3#Naming_Conventions in 2007...

If you get a chance can you give your opinion about a reverting a name change in the following article Talk:Kripalu_Maharaj#Revert_name_change. The article was originally called "Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj" but 2 days ago a user changed it to "Kripalu Maharaj". Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj is the name by which the subject of the article is overwhelmingly known as, and I have given many reasons and proof of that, and reasons why the name should be reverted back to Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj. "Kripalu Maharaj" sounds completely wrong to anyone who knows the subject, and anyway there are other people with similar names.

Anyway, since you previously vaguely commented on the issue, maybe you can leave a comment on the talk page for the article.

Thanks. Lotusjuice (talk) 22:21, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Moving Burma to Myanmar - ongoing poll

[edit]

This is to let you know that an ongoing poll is taking place to move Burma to Myanmar. I know this happened just recently but no administrator would close these frequent rm's down, so here we go again. This note is going out to wikipedia members who have participated in Burma/Myanmar name changing polls in the past. It does not include banned members nor those with only ip addresses. Thank you. About the deletion of a page

[edit]

Hello

My email address is runnerbloodprince@yahoo.com if you want to respond. I'm not sending this message from my PC.

I wanted to ask you about Yaron Lichtenstein's page deletion. I am a former boxer (3 years at a professional club) and had a little training in Ninjutsu. I went to several Krav-Maga schools in my country, and no one was satisfactory. The single one which I actually think is good is Yaron Lichtenstein's Bukan school. Yaron is also proven legally (legal translations from Hebrew to English) the Grand Master of Krav Maga, in documents signed by Imi at Hebrew notary.

I don't think a 9 dan Grand Master in a really known martial art is not noteworthy on Wikipedia, the biggest encyclopedia on the internet.

Looking forward to your response, Alex — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.83.42.165 (talk) 11:15, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alex,
Just to let you see, this was how the article looked like before deletion:
The first problem was that it was written in Spanish on the English Wikipedia so most readers will have no idea what the article is about and also if this topic deserves an article. The second thing was that there were no sources supporting anything mentioned. I think you write the article out again in English and at least direct the reader to a few websites that describe Yaron's notability in the Krav Maga martial arts. In further time you can focus on reliable sources. Then I think it should be accepted and not deleted again. Thanks. GizzaTalk © 01:20, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just to give you a heads up I intend to file a WP:DRV on this article, I believe the premise of the original AfD was floored and consensus at WT:MMA is that this sort of approach is the way to resolve the issues. Mtking (edits) 03:23, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletions for allowing moves

[edit]

DaGizza,

Thank you for speedy deleting All the World's Mornings - However, after you delete to make way for a move, it's important that you actually do the move requested. If I had been away, this page could have been a redlink for days, and it clearly shouldn't be. This was discussed at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion/Archive 47#Speedy delete for pages blocking a move. I'm wondering if the link that's attached to the speedy delete notice isn't working? Ego White Tray (talk) 03:52, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2012 in UFC

[edit]

I just wanted to say, 2012 in UFC is different from the page that was deleted. The old page had information on all events. This one just mentions those events that are deleted from wikipedia. So basically you removed information that is nowhere else on wikipedia. Would it be possible for you to restore the latest version of the page to my namespace? Thanks in advance. Also, I can't seem to find the deletion discussion anywhere... There's no link on my talk page. Do you know where it is? Oskar Liljeblad (talk) 06:36, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'll invite you to save yourself a bit of embarrassment and recommend that you revisit the article above. I realize that you're not around here too often, but if you take a look at the article's content, you should clearly see the blatant vandalism. It's not enough to have a list at the end of the article that appears to represent citations, when the article's content merely equates to vandalism. Please note that the article is based on a current juvenile meme based off of the Five-Year Engagement movie and replicated here. When an article is flagged as blatant vandalism, please make sure to take a more thorough look at the content. Notability and citations have nothing to do with this article. Dear DaGizza, Greetings. My understanding is that you have deleted the Wikipedia article I published earlier today in regard to the subject Katherine Lorenz. The reason given was: (G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement of http://www.linkedin.com/in/katherinelorenz). I would respectfully ask that you consider undeleting the Katherine Lorenz article after making the necessary edit/deletion of the Unambiguous copyright infringement of http://www.linkedin.com/in/katherinelorenz). I was not aware that use of an external link to an individual's LinkedIn page represented copyright infringement, and I apologize. Otherwise, the article is very well researched, sourced, and based on reliable sources from a number of credible news gathering organizations ranging from The Wall Street Journal and Forbes to the Houston Business Journal and Huffington Post. Other third-party sources, including the Environmental Defense Fund, National Academy of Sciences, and the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation are used. Thank you and I look forward to your guidance on how to proceed. Kindly, Katebackstage (talk) 03:35, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation

[edit]

There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us. Please sign up on the editathon project page if you can participate either online or in person with other Wikipedians. Hope to see you there!
