CydeBot incorrect deletion

[edit]

Just wanted to direct your attention to Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2015_January_16 which caused this and this, the second being incorrect. This is an edge case but it would be great if it could be fixed! ·addshore· talk to me! 19:06, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Museum hacks and museum edits

[edit]

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

If you have any questions or have any requests, please email me at james.hare@wikimediadc.org.

See you there! – James Hare

Cydebot moving categories

[edit]

Category:Level crossing accidents in the United States was recently taken to a CFD that resulted in a decision of "rename". The closing administrator listed it at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working, and the bot soon moved the contents to the new name, deleted the old name, and pasted its code and contributor list into the new name without problem. But why does it have to delete and recreate? Is there a possibility that the bot could start moving categories instead of deleting old names and creating new names? CydeBot just deleted Wikipedia:Five pillars

[edit]

As per heading, it just deleted Wikipedia:Five pillars seemingly confusing it with the category.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 21:27, 11 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ah restored, but still probably worth checking into, next time it might not be a page so widely watched.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 21:29, 11 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wanna bet that it'll be going for Jimbo's user page next? Favonian (talk) 21:29, 11 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not the first time: Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2015 January 27. Looks like the bot has problems when a category without the 'Category:' is the name of a page in a namespace other than main so has a 'xxx:' for some namespace 'xxx'. As such looks like an easy edge case to fix.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 23:30, 11 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And one more: User:Muffingg because of Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2015_January_16#Category:User:Muffingg.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 23:54, 11 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure that this user is around Wikipedia enough to give your inquiry immediate attention. However, I think if you email him at cydeweys (at) gmail.com, you will get a prompt response. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:57, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification On WP Policies Re: Notability, Etc

[edit]

Hello,

My company is interested in building a Wikipedia page. I understand the Wikipedia community's defense of having an inviolable, objective database of verified (bits of) knowledge. What I'm trying to do now is link to outside sources and create the page (I'm an officer of the company) in an authoritative manner in such a way that sheds no doubt on it's authenticity or objective mention.

Current issues are:

  • notability
  • outside links
  • conflict of interest / promotional material (per previous editorial comment)

Hope you can help,

Cydebot created a weird test category

[edit]

I just tagged Category:Test2 for CSD (C1, G1, and G2). It was created by User:Cydebot, for reasons I entirely fail to comprehend. I can't see anything obviously relevant on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working, but maybe I just don't know how to read it properly. Anyway, the bot's edit summary says you're the original author, so here's your CSD warning. --NYKevin 04:51, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

...and User:Bbb23 has rejected my CSD, telling me to report it to you. Ball's in your court, I guess. --NYKevin 05:02, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, my bad. I failed to clean up something after testing recent fixes for proper category moving. I just deleted it. --Cyde Weys 19:23, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

CfD processing

[edit]

Hi, thanks for rewriting CydeBot's CFD process to move the category page. Please tweak this to remove the CFD template after Speedy moves, e.g. Category:International association football competitions hosted by the United States moved per WP:CFDS. – Fayenatic London 23:52, 28 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out. Looking at the code, I believe it should apply to all category pages, not just speedy moves. The new code that takes advantage of the category moving functionality isn't also editing the text of the page like it used to when it was copy/pasting the category text from the old page into the new page. It looks like I need to do a separate edit now after the move completes. I'm working on it now. --Cyde Weys 13:23, 5 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting on to this. I agree that it's not only speedy moves but ordinary CFR renames too which are not being edited at the moment. – Fayenatic London 20:28, 12 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've made some fairly significant changes to how all of this stuff works now. Please keep your eye out! But it should all be working. --Cyde Weys 20:29, 19 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, good, thanks. It's still confused by 2 templates where there is a speedy and a full nomination: [1]Fayenatic London 13:32, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

CydeBot has stopped helping at CFD

[edit]

Hi, CydeBot is still running (Special:Contributions/Cydebot), but not at CFD. – Fayenatic London 18:26, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's doing tasks from WP:CFDWR but not the main WP:CFDW. – Fayenatic London 19:27, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
For info, I have just tried to enable AvicBot. (cc: Armbrust) – Fayenatic London 21:58, 9 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that didn't work either. – Fayenatic London 16:36, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks, it's good to see it working again. Fayenatic London 15:18, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm looking into it. It's hitting exceptions on some of the tasks. Looks like some issues in PyWikiBot-core. I'll probably be submitting another patch soon. --Cyde Weys 17:52, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It's also only removing part of the Cfd template, e.g. [2]. – Fayenatic London 08:25, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Urgh. So much in flux with PyWikiBot recently. I'll deal with that too. --Cyde Weys 19:26, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Giant sequoias

Wondering if it's worthwhile to estimate ages of the giant trees. This might help people learning about them to see how important conservation efforts are as these are certainly not replaceable. Thank you! 168.156.111.2 (talk) 20:09, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cydebot

[edit]

...is running just fine (well, at least, as of this post :P). Anyway, just pinging you to say I appreciate the bot and hope everything's going well for you otherwise. Cheers =) --slakrtalk / 04:25, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I concur, thank you! – Fayenatic London 16:46, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be taking a nap at the moment. Actually I'm thankful, because some tasks were listed in error. Hope it will wake up shortly.
I just noticed that there is also user:Cydebot_1 which made 3 edits in 2012. Is this a bogus account that should be blocked, or a test of yours? – Fayenatic London 15:11, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for waking it up. Working nicely now, except that it still leaves 5 lines of hidden junk after speedy renames. – Fayenatic London 15:35, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes it is still only removing one line out of 5, e.g. [3]. – Fayenatic London 14:18, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish American/-American

[edit]

Hi, I never saw the Call for Renaming, so I'm late to the discussion, but with the recent addition of the hyphen, Jewish-American short story writers is the only one in the tree to use the hyphen. What's the best thing for me to do in order to discuss whether to revert the change or to change the entire tree? Thanks, Aristophanes68 (talk) 19:58, 25 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cancel that—I found the revert button for the category and then reverted the individual articles manually. Thanks, Aristophanes68 (talk) 15:40, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
