Thanks

[edit]

Just wanted to say thank you to your personally for the respons on the Reference Desk. To be honest: this is the first Talk page I'm editing so I hope I'm doing it right. Could you please explain a little further how you stopped your 'dreaming problem'? Thank you for the help!

Exceptional Newcomer Award for Cosmic girl

Cosmic girl, I present you with this Exceptional Newcomer award because of your thirst for knowledge and because of the way you pose questions and encourage thinking and polite discourse. The butterfly reflects your inner beauty, may the fluttering of her wings bring you peace if ever you experience a time of trouble. Johntex\talk 05:26, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

THANK YOU!!! :D ...I'm gonna cry. =P--Cosmic girl 17:18, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe this will encourage you to stop being lazy and write some articles! JK =P —Keenan Pepper 03:51, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did you really have to say that? didn't your mom teach you to be nice to foreign wikipedians? that was rude Pepper...I hope it never happens again... and also, I hope I never talk to you again...nor meet you in person, ever!.jk!!!! :D u rock! :), I like your sense of humour. --Cosmic girl 02:01, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've got a job for you :P

[edit]

I think far too many people are hung up about "mainspace edits" and I don't really mind that you haven't bothered yet. Your thirst for knowledge is impressive and refreshing (shouldn't drinks be refreshing, not thirsts? Hmmm....) - probably because I have spent far too long trying to persuade teenagers that they should listen to me in class and learn more stuff about my fascinating subject (!) and then getting ground down when they decided they had other things they'd rather do, even the ones who do remember to bring their own pens and pencils to school - so I think you fit on Wikipedia just fine. Anyhow, there aren't so many Wikipedians in Peru, and that means you are an even more special Wikipedian. I just wondered whether you had a digital camera. There are lots of places in Peru we have no photographs for (see Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Peru to have a look at some of the articles that have been identified as needing a photo). It is really hard to find copyright-free images of Peru and if you could take some of the photos we are missing then it would be appreciated a lot. You wouldn't even have to edit the articles if you wanted to keep up your amazing 0% record ;-) Just give me a message and I could do that for you. It would be great if you could help out in that way! Many thanks, TheGrappler 19:27, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

great! I'd LOVE to do it, I promisse I'll have one or more pics uploaded by sunday :). and I'll take them myself since I love photography.--Cosmic girl 20:33, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That would be really cool :-) Could you upload them to the Commons: rather than Wikipedia itself, so other language Wikipedias can use them? Also it would be good if you could release them under a Creative Commons license, so if anybody used them in a book they wouldn't have to print out the whole Wikipedia:Text of the GFDL... TheGrappler 14:43, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ok!, how do I do that?--Cosmic girl 16:25, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just click on the Commons: link, then click "Upload file" (it's on the left under "Participate"). You can get a username on Commons if you want, but that's optional. I look forward to seeing your pictures! —Keenan Pepper 16:31, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you do need to create an account, but you can just do that and use your Wikipedia name. It's not hard! Then you need to click on "Upload file" on the bottom left. When you pick a license, say "Own work, copyleft: Multi-license with GFDL and Creative Commons CC-BY-SA-2.5 and older versions (2.0 and 1.0)" to give your photos out under a relatively free license. Give the images a sensible file name that describes what they show. In the summary, say that you took them, and describe (in English and Spanish, if you like!) what they show and when you took the photo (give a date). After you've done that you should edit the page and put on a category: look through Commons:Category:Peru and find a subcategory that describes the photo, then put the photo into that category by typing: [[Category:Buildings in Peru]] (for example). If you are really stuck you can email the photos and their descriptions to me and I'll put them on for you (my email is here_if_you_need_me and is at hotmail.com). Look forward to seeing your pictures! TheGrappler 20:46, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok guys , I'm sorry it took so long but I've been busy these days... I've uploaded a couple of pics..my name at the commons is cosmic peruvian...I didn't know how to put them in the category...sorry... :S I hope I haven't messed things up.:|--Cosmic girl 02:16, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

uhhhh... did u find them?.--Cosmic girl 00:13, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They look great, but you forgot to put a copyright license on them. If you took them, you can choose whatever license you want, but I suggest CC-by-sa-2.5. —Keenan Pepper 01:01, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, yeah I took them... can you help me with the license thing? please explain me what to do, I have no clue. --Cosmic girl 02:24, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I will categorize them for you if you want :-) Add the following text to your images to release their copyrights: {{Cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}{{GFDL-self}}
Many thanks! TheGrappler 02:44, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They are very nice pictures though :-) Would you be able to help me a little by explaining more fully what they are of and where they are taken? So maybe at Image:Pileta plaza.JPG, you could say what city it is in, and where in the city it is; and at Image:Museo cervesur.JPG, you could say the name of the museum? Also, it would be good if you could put the date when you took them (if you can't remember, the month would be a good start). Did you take any of these looking at the list of Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Peru? I just wondered, if you did, could you tell me which ones so I can put them into the right article? :-) Many thanks again! TheGrappler 02:50, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RD question

[edit]

I think your question was accidentally deleted by someone trying to make some insult about Arkansas.

When are you traveling to the US? As far as places to visit, you should check out Florida, Arkansas is really nice too (I went to college there). Colorado is good for skiing, but not much else, IMO.

Anyways, I hope you have a great time visiting the US. Let me know if you happen to swing by my area. XM 23:03, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, cool! I definitely will:),but... where do u live?, lol, what does IMO stand for? :P...--Cosmic girl 02:06, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In My Opinion. A common variant is IMHO, In My Humble Opinion. —Keenan Pepper 03:11, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But I'm not humble, so I leave the H out. :) Oh, and I live in Fayetteville, Arkansas XM 16:15, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photos

[edit]

Hey :-)

Thanks for the photos... you still need to put some image tags on them though, they're up for deletion at the moment due to lack of copyright and source info :-/ TheGrappler 18:15, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OMG!!! please tell me what do I have to do before they delete them! how do I find them and how do I edit them? and what do I write?.--Cosmic girl 23:06, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here's your user talk page on Commons. Someone has left you messages about all three photos. For each one, you should go to the image page, click "edit", and replace the {{no license...}} tag with something like {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}}. Cc-by-sa-2.5 means you allow anyone to use the photos as long as they give you credit for taking them and share them under the same license. —Keenan Pepper 23:26, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ok... I wrote that copyright...but I dunno if I did it right, can u please chek and tell me? thanks a lot Keenan!!!! :D --Cosmic girl 02:33, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have to put the braces ({{...}}) around it just so. I fixed it for you. In the future, you can just select a license from the menu when you upload the file (i.e. make sure it's not "none selected", because then it will be deleted). —Keenan Pepper 03:11, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot Keenan. --Cosmic girl 23:36, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

[edit]

If you would like to see Arkansas sometime when you're in the US, you're welcome to come visit me. I'm sure we could have a lot of fun...we could both show each other some beautiful things.

Anyways, I read your userpage and notice you have a very skeptical/rational mind, I appericate that, as sadly it is an uncommon trait in people.

FYI, I strongly oppose censorship & religion, and support capitalism & such. Baron Von Westfall 13:39, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ok cool :), I don't think I'll be able though, cause I'll b far from the center of the US...I'll be in one of the extremes, and I won't say which...for identification avoidance purposes...lol, I'm kinda paranoid lately...but I've got my reasons...--Cosmic girl 14:32, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have fun in Vermont :) Baron Von Westfall 19:28, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not gonna be in vermont! ... ok...I will... but shhh...--Cosmic girl 22:19, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So what's so special about you that you've managed to attract the attention of multiple stalkers? By the way, I know exactly how you feel, as I freqently have to deal with stalkers--nearly every girl that meets me ends up trying to stalk me. Sometimes, I feel like a lone gazelle on an island filled with cheetahs Baron Von Westfall 12:39, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

there's nothing particularly special about me, I guess... it's just that people from my university also use wikipedia and there's this ex guy friend from my class who is literally OBSESSED with wikipedia...and I think he used to like me, and he grew to hate me at some point, because I only considered him a friend...and he knows me quite well because I used to tell him a lot about me (because I'm quite naive) and if he ever read my profile, he'd immediately identify me, from my userboxes and specially for my desrcription of myself, that's why I erased it. and also, some other people could find out stuff about me from some of the questions I ask, specially those in the language section...:( cause they relate to 2 crushes I had.(and still have a crush on 1). one of them from my university also, and sort of a friend too... and his nickname is so original that I bet he's the only one who has it...it's so original that I'm scared to even mention it here, I'd be glad that if u know it, u don't write it.--Cosmic girl 13:59, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's me. It's okay that you have a crush on me. Most girls do, so I'm used to it. Oh, and who can't be obsessed with Wikipedia? It's a one-stop shop that's able to satisfy my eternally inquisitive mind with its endless information & knowledge. Baron Von Westfall 14:50, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

haha ok.--Cosmic girl 14:54, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Stalker avoidance"

[edit]

I notice you removed some information from your user page "for stalker avoidance purposes", but it is still publicly accessible in the history (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Cosmic_girl&oldid=63445710). Do you want me to delete the old versions so they can't be accessed? —Keenan Pepper 19:44, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

U r awesome,I don't think I can ever thank you enough...I'd be really grateful if you do it since I don't know how...(surprise), but can you tell me how to erase info. from there? just so I know...:P. thank u again! XD.--Cosmic girl 22:24, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, even if you knew how, you couldn't do it, because you have to be an administrator. =P I deleted your page and restored only the most recent version, so now would-be stalkers have no access to your information. You're welcome! —Keenan Pepper 22:30, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added something to your userpage, I hope u don't mind...since u said u encouraged users to add stuff.--Cosmic girl 22:43, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

oh and also...I wish they where 'would-be stalkers'..., it's a shame they are 'actual stalkers',...actually...from my university.--Cosmic girl 22:47, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your computer

[edit]

Yes, I like my userpage too. That's why I went through the trouble to get the code to work. About your computer:

  1. Which version of Windows and MSN Messenger are you using? The most recent won't work with Windows 98.
  2. Have you tried scanning for virusses and if so how?
  3. Is anything else not working as it should?
  4. What was the last thing you installed or updated before you noticed things go wrong? --Mgm|(talk) 21:27, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanx 4 answering here. =), ok 1- the versions that won't work are any that have the MSN today window, so basically all new ones, and I'm currently using a really old one which doesn't even have a display picture nor a number of version. and I have windows XP so I don't think windows is the problem. 2- yeah, I've scanned it and do so periodically. 3- hmmm let's c... it's somewhat slow sometimes and I have virus problems that screw my files every once in a while but so far I've been able to fix that. 4-I don't remember =(...maybe I've downloaded songs...just that...and I installed 'audacity' a program to edit songs. --Cosmic girl 21:36, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I have a popup blocker! but I don't know what is it and how do deactivate it... the weird thing is that this is only happening in my user, not with my sister's. I'll leave u a note. thank you for helping me! XD!!!! --Cosmic girl 20:38, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

no, not really! :S ... but i know that this only happens when im logged in my user and not in any other... so MSN works in other users... I do't have a problem now, cause i'll just use another user until i format the pc. thanx a lot btw!!! XD!! .--Cosmic girl 22:37, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Having the soundcard itself is not enough. To make the computer recognize it and have it work properly you need a driver. Unfortunately, I don't know which ones you need. If you know which one you have, your best guess is ask the manufacturer. - Mgm|(talk) 21:45, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what you mean by driver...:( I mean, I have a soundcard and all... it was all fine, I have the hardware... but, where do I get the driver? buy it? download it? did it get errased when I formated it?.--Cosmic girl 21:51, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think I got it, thank u 4 the information about the drivers! :D --Cosmic girl 17:17, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vermont/IBM

[edit]

I'm glad I was able to help. After all, that's part of the reason why I edit the Wikipedia.

I understand the need to appease parents with a career choice. And I probably know better than you may think where you're coming from with your parents and computers. My father wouldn't buy me one when I was a kid because "he'll learn about computers later when he needs to use them".

As for getting a job with IBM and your janitor comment... You're not far off from spelling out how I'm getting my foot in the door. My degrees don't have anything to do with computers and technology. But I'm working at IBM because that's exactly what I do want, something to do with computers and tech. I don't have a high level job there. I work in the clean room. It's a basic manufacturing position that anyone with a high school diploma could get, and many of my coworkers have just a diploma. I didn't even start as a regular employee. I was hired as a temporary employee or "Long Term Supplemental" as IBM refers to it. After showing diligence and a desire to move up, I was converted to a regular employee which now offers me a chance to start taking classes, find a mentor within the company to help me, etc. etc. Am I saying that this is typical or that it's a sure thing that you could do the same, no. I'm just saying it's possible.

As far as being a non-U.S. citizen goes, IBM tries its very best to look beyond that, from what I've seen. One woman in my department came from Bosnia or Serbia (can't remember which) and she's a regular employee just like me. She also recently became a naturalized citizen. There are also people that I work near who are from Eastern Europe or the former Soviet states, the Bahamas, the Middle East, and Asia judging by all of their accents. I'm not very outgoing so I haven't really asked them about it, I'm just kind of quiet, so I apologize if that all comes off with less confidence than you'd hope.

If you'd like me to ask some questions of my manager as to how foreign nationals could get interviews or anything like that, let me know. I don't have a problem with asking questions of him.

And if you'd like more info about Vermont itself, let me know. Dismas|(talk) 09:11, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, are you coming to Vermont soon? You said you'd be living in Bolton, so do you know people here already? Or are you coming on some sort of vacation? I live about 30 minutes from Bolton. Meeting would be great! I'll just have to be careful explaining that we'd be meeting a woman from the internet... She may be suspicious since she and I met on the net.  :-)
I don't really have a 'high tech position'. Remember, people coming in with just a high school diploma could do my job. It's just a simple job in the cleanroom manufacturing the wafers.
As far as the nanotech goes, yeah we research it but I'm certain that's done at one of the other facilities. Dismas|(talk) 13:58, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand what you mean about your average internet surfer.... You should be able to contact me via the "E-mail this user" link on the left. And I don't know anything about visas except what they are. As far as different types and such, that's a mystery to me.
December, huh? Dress warm!  :-) Dismas|(talk) 14:31, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi dismas, did u get my email?! :P.--Cosmic girl 17:09, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you posted on the Ref Desk and it reminded me... I got your email, did you ever get my response? I sent it and then I hadn't heard from you since. Dismas|(talk) 08:03, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

no I didn't get it =(. --Cosmic girl 15:23, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Astrology

[edit]

Hi Cosmic Girl. I know very little about Vedic astrology except that it's very different from western astrology, both in terms of what you put in (even the zodiac and the "planets" are different) and what you get out (Vedic astrology seems to be mostly concerned with how many children and cattle you will have!). Needless to say I was trained in the western (more psychological) approach, but that was 35 years ago and I haven't done a chart for at least 10 years. (It's very time consuming!) I can probably put you in touch with a good (qualified) astrologer in your area. Most astrologers these days hold counselling sessions rather than simply write you a report, but you can certainly get a written report if that's what you want. It'll cost around £200, but you can also get a good computer generated report for around £40, and I often get those for people as presents. If you just want an answer to a specific question, I can probably help. If it's personal, your date, place, and time of birth would be useful. You can email me by going to my user or talk page, and clicking on "Email this user". Don't expect a quick response as I'm out quite a lot over the next few days.--Shantavira|feed me 19:22, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message. The email link should be in the lower side-bar on my talk page between "logs" and "upload file", but I know different people see things differently depending on their setup. I didn't want to put my email address on your user page in case spammers pick it up, although Gmail is pretty good at filtering out the spammers. Anyway, since you now know it's a Gmail address you can probably guess the rest!
I think the "philosophy of astrology" probably boils down to "As Above, So Below". It's a symbolic language. Every astrologer has their own idea about "how it works", or else, like me, the question doesn't really bother them. Nobody really knows how gravity or electricity work, but that hasn't prevented us using them.--Shantavira|feed me 11:04, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cosmic girl!

I have put together a survey for female editors of Wikipedia (and related projects) in order to explore, in greater detail, women's experiences and roles within the Wikimedia movement. It'd be wonderful if you could participate!

It's an independent survey, done by me, as a fellow volunteer Wikimedian. It is not being done on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope you'll participate!

Just click this link to participate in this survey, via Google!

Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me or stop by my user talk page. Also, feel free to share this any other female Wikimedians you may know.
