Formatting help

[edit]

{{helpme}}

I would like some help on formatting my article. I have no idea how to make a new section or how to include the reference links! Thanks, AFisch99 (talk) 13:32, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • You make a new section by putting two equals signs around a title, such as;
==History==
You can also make subsections, e.g. ===Early history=== etc.
  • For references, you put the details in-between <ref> and </ref>, immediately after the fact. You then need a {{reflist}}, and they're numbered, linked and displayed automatically. For example,
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>

== References ==
{{reflist}}
To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref.

Please ask again if you need more help.  Chzz  ►  13:54, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I just added an example reference to User:AFisch99/Purl stitches - take a look. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  14:01, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I need to know how to make a personal sandbox page and also how to find the User:AFisch99/Purl stitches page. Thanks, AFisch99 (talk) 18:35, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To create a sandbox, just go here and create the page, User:AFisch99/Sandbox. Also, User:AFisch99/Purl_stitches can be accessed by adding "/Purl stitches" after the end of your User page's URL. The same can be done with your sandbox. It might also help if you add [[User:AFisch99/Purl_stitches]] and [[User:AFisch99/Sandbox]] to your userpage, for easy access (this creates a wikilink to the page in question). Hope this helps, and feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions. - SudoGhost (talk) 18:49, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Instructor

[edit]

Hello, AFisch99, my name is Riley Huntley and I will be your instructor. As an instructor, I have a certain requirement of policies, methods and programs to teach you but before we get started on that I have a few questions.

  1. How would you like to communicate? Through IRC or talk pages?
  2. What are you most interested in learning?
  3. Would you also like to learn about New Page Patrolling? The Feedback Dashboard? Creating articles?

I hope to hear from you soon! -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 18:56, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  1. As for communication, I don't really know what IRC is, but talk pages sounds fine :)
  2. Interested in learning...well, I might need to do a bit more research first, but I want to learn the basic tools and methods and such.
  3. Actually, all of those other things sound good to learn. Thanks! AFisch99 (talk) 19:27, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When would you like to start training? You can read about IRC here. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 04:04, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Whenever! :) AFisch99 (talk) 20:36, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to look at; User:Riley_Huntley/CVUA/Tasks. Those are just somethings you may be expected to know and would be great if you could learn. I don't expect you to know much of it so if you have any questions, feel free to ask!. Here are some suggestions; try and stay away from editing your userpage, many bad things can happen (ie. Some users will bite/pick on you just because of your userboxes). Counter-vandalism is a great place to get started, you learn several policies and get to meet a lot of people. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 22:49, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism reverts

[edit]

Hi. I realise the diffs are a bit complicated now since some were oversighted. I'm just curious why you are reverting yourself as a vandal. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:48, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, sorry, that was a bit complicated. I wasn't reverting myself, I has just put one vandalism template on there and undid that to put one on there with Twinkle. I'm new at this, so I forgot to use it at first. Sorry for the confusion! AFisch99 (talk) 12:42, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, wait. I see what you mean! That was just a mistake of mine. Whoops! AFisch99 (talk) 12:43, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Wikipedia:9front requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer. Please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. — Dmitrij D. Did I move this page incorrectly? Sorry if I did! AFisch99 (talk) 00:02, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I understand this now. This is the one I accidentally made a Wikipedia-related page. Whoops. I'm new at this, so I'm still making some mistakes. AFisch99 (talk) 13:38, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Transliteration from Spanish to English of a last name

[edit]

Hello AFisch99,

I would like you to help me in transliterating my last name. You see, my last name is written in English with an s ("Valensi"), rather than with a c. That last name was derived from the city of Valencia (my dad's anscestors were Jews who where expelled from Valencia in 1492), and it means "someone from Valencia". Should it be spelled in English with an s or with a c? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.229.163.172 (talk) 16:40, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'll try my best to help! I just have one question so far. "Valensi" is the name in Spanish, correct? AFisch99 (talk) 20:55, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"Valensi" is how I write my name in English, so I suppose that it's written in the same way in any variation of the latin alphabet. In addition, the name comes from Spanish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.229.182.195 (talk) 14:14, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I don't think it matters! I'm not sure which way it would be, but frankly I think you could just keep writing it the way you have it. If you have any more questions, I'll try to direct them to someone else for you. AFisch99 (talk) 14:50, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help?

[edit]

It appears my adopter has retired. I didn't receive any notice of this...which doesn't bother me too much because I haven't been active very much recently myself, but now I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone know? Thanks, AFisch99 (talk) 13:39, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AFisch99. Have you considered requesting another adopter from the list of adopters? They are very helpful, you might well find one available. WormTT(talk) 13:44, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'll do that soon, then. I just wasn't sure if there was a special process or anything... AFisch99 (talk) 13:47, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fall Events from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in its events:

  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best October copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC).
  • Voting is in progress for the September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not.
  • NEW!! In the week from Sunday 21 October to Saturday 27 October, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} belonging to selected project(s). For the first blitz, we'll start with WikiProject Olympics and WikiProject Albums and add more Projects to the blitz as we clear them. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
  • November 2012 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in 2011 and to complete all requests placed before the end of October. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in 2011", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

Hi. Sorry your request for a check languished for so long. I saw it, but was stuck in a long copy edit, only just finished. I've had look for you this afternoon and I think your edits were fine and you were justified in removing the tag. Two comments: semicolons should be used to separate list items at most very sparingly (in fact semicolons should be used sparingly, period, as they draw attention to themselves rather strongly). The only times to use them in lists is when the list items are themselves complicated by the use of descriptive phrases and clauses, and in a list of lists like the one in the 2nd paragraph of Japonism#Artists and movements, where you'll see I've restored commas to the inner lists but used semicolons to separate them. The second comment is easier: the article needs to be consistent one way or the other about whether ukiyo-e is italicised or not. I haven't taken a view on that; would you like to?

I've done a quick pass thourgh the article and made some other edits. Please take a look and let me know if there are any you'd like to discuss. I'll keep your talk page watchlisted for a few days just in case. Kind regards, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 14:25, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Everything looks great to me! I just have one question, which I'm afraid sounds pretty silly. What exactly is "taking a view" on something? AFisch99 (talk) 14:43, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Taking a view

[edit]

Hi. This is really strange! I can see your reply on Japonism, but when I click edit to reply to your question, yours doesn't show in the edit window. I've never seen this before. Well, by "take a view" I meant make a decision between two probably equally good alternatives. I was inviting you to resolve the issue in favour of your own opinion. --Stfg (talk) 14:57, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, okay! Thanks, I'll do that. AFisch99 (talk) 14:58, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November.

End of Year Events from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in its events:

  • The December 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best December copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC).
  • Voting is in progress for the November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not.
  • From Sunday 16 December to Saturday 22 December, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} from January 2012. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
  • January 2013 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in January, February, and March 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2012. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in January, February, and March 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

Coodinator election: Nominations are open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January to 30 June 2013. Nominations close on December 15 at 23:59 UTC, after which voting will run until the end of December. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

WikiProject Wikify: Current Backlog Reduction Plan

[edit]

Hey, I noticed you marked yourself as a member of WikiProject Wikify and you are currently listed as active. I was wondering if you would be able to assist with our current backlog reduction plan. While traditional drives are more structured month-long sprints by WikiProject Wikify members, there is currently lacking activity within the project and in order to significantly reduce the incredible backlog, members are encouraged to review all articles marked with the Underlinked Template Message to analyze the worthiness of the template message on the given article. Articles that have nothing to link or are have had wikilinks sufficiently added should have the template removed to clear the backlog and make it easier for editors to find articles in genuine need of wikification. This can be done by any editor; however, all editors should consider joining if they haven't done so already. Thank you!
