Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 06:32, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Roman army - apparent duplication

[edit]

Thanks for spotting this. It's not quite a duplication, but nevertheless, it's confusing, unnecessary and unhelpful. I've searched the article history to see how this arose. Way back, around 2010, an editor seems to have thought it a good idea to provide an initial, more or less generalised "overview" of historical trends in the army's development, following generally accepted date parameters. The same editor (and others) expanded these periods as subtopics, below. Then someone else seems to have noticed that the time periods in the summary were the same as those further down; and quite naturally, they altered the "Historical overview" format to suit. So what started out as an attempt to provide a brief summary under the heading of "Historical trends" or somesuch has evolved into something else. It's hard to believe that nobody noticed this before now - but they didn't (I certainly didn't). PS I'll post this at the article talk-page.
