Limited Internet access

[edit]

Hi all, I'm moving across town later today and won't have immediate access to the Internet (it's not set up yet). Should anything urgent come up (doubtful), I'll reply as soon as possible. Thanks, Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 15:39, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Hope the move goes well, Hchc2009 (talk) 15:43, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
Good to know, I'll be vandalizing your articles while you're away. It was the North Australian dreadmuch footrace, wasn't it? :P Parsecboy (talk) 20:15, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Hchc. As for Parsec, I'll be floating through lots of IPs as I drift to different wi-fi spots. I'll start socking and vandalizing your articles. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 00:54, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
I'll just protect them all, easy peasy. And once you unprotect them so your socks can vandalize, I'll get you desysopped, blocked, and banned. Check and mate, sir. Parsecboy (talk) 12:11, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Oh no, then I'll just activate my web of sleeper socks. Labyrinth13, part 2. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 16:19, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Too much?

[edit]

Slightly long title in Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2014-05-07/Featured_content but I've been trying to either have something amusing or at least a quote, and... that's the best I've come up with. It's that, or swap the images and use "Water, water everywhere" for a likely dry aqueduct, which doesn't appeal. Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:06, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

That's fine for the main article. Can I chop off the text in parenthesis for the title that goes out to all the talk pages? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 02:09, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Oh, definitely. I see that as a subtitle. Just, well, I know what FPs are going to be promoted by the 3rd with a high degree of predictability, and I suspect there will be no more FAs or FLs by Sunday, so... Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:12, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
By the way, does the WikiCup report go in FC or News and Notes? Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:14, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Normally in FC. I included a short bit in NAN this week, but perhaps you could use your notes from this week's NAN (not sure why you deleted them?) next week? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 02:23, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
I asked J Milburn to use his notes for the WikiCup newsletter, he said he'd rather I wait for it to be finished. Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:33, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Ah, that's understandable! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 02:44, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

[edit]

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Wikicup and FC

[edit]

Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2014-05-07/Featured_content I managed to find an image from the work of every single competitor who advanced. Ye may want to split the Wikicup off to its own article. Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:03, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, we'll split that off. How does "CycloneIsaac" mean that they'll work on highways? :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 23:51, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Note "surprisingly" - I've been using "unsurprisingly" a few times previous where usernames do match content. Anyway, I'm going to try to get the FC finished; It's still only half-done (and in no way publishable), and it's probably the blocker if I don't get it done tomorrow. Adam Cuerden (talk) 00:25, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
Also: Now at [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2014-05-07/WikiCup
It's all published! Thanks, Adam! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 20:17, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

So, the entire talk page has devolved into attacks on featured pictures. Great. I'm going to sleep on it, but if this continues, and the WikiCup judges don't start laying the smackdown, I'm withdrawing. The WikiCup is meant to be a friendly competition. It's become a damn hostile one. Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:26, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

What kind of smackdown are you looking for? Kicking people out for criticizing the amount of points FPs get? I think both sides are putting out legitimate, if sometimes drama-laden, thoughts that we should take into account for next year. At the moment, we're rather locked into rules that everyone agreed on at the beginning of this year's competition. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 22:16, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

How's the footer gallery look? Too much? Torn between that and giving a sample as the FP photo. Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:25, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Maybe cut it down? It's pretty large. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 23:40, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Signpost

[edit]

Is there any chance we could get the Signpost advertised a bit more? We've been getting a bit under a thousand viewers to each FC article, according to stats.grok.se, and that's awfully low for the amount of work that FC takes. Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:42, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Any suggestions? I've tweeted/Facebooked about FC twice this week and do so on most weeks, but the current pagination (subpages of a Wikipedia namespace page, with no URL indication of what's in the article and the default page title being like Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2014-05-14/Featured content, not "On the rocks") means that we are ranked very low on Google, etc. We also rarely get linked to by outside news organizations, even when we're one of the first ones on a story (eg Wiki-PR...), which is something that rankles me. I've previously thought about moving it all to an external site, but I fear that we would lose our core readers—a Wikizine-style death. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 23:40, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
Any chance we could get it added to the welcome message template, and maybe a brief Watchlist message once every three months or so? I mean, we are meant to be the important news about Wikipedia, so it makes sense for Wikipedia to direct people to us. Adam Cuerden (talk) 11:48, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Indeed. And it is an open question why the denizens on main-page talk have such an objection to linking to the SP from the MP (when you look at all the detritus they do link to from the MP). Ed is still internetless. I'm sweating on his coming online when I'm awake: we need to organise exactly when publication is going to be in relation to the main story this time. Tony (talk) 13:39, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, we've run a few controversial stories, so that disqualifies us in their eyes. Never mind the mistakes at DYK that occur far more often. As for the welcome message, that's a very good idea. I'll boldly try adding it when I'm online next! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 15:59, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
(Talk-page stalker) Giving you a data-point of one. I regularly click on Portal:Featured content which can be reached from any page by clicking "Featured content" in the navigation box near the top left corner. I do it precisely to learn about newly featured content. The Signpost overview is much more appetizing, of course, and I will use that from now on. I didn't know it existed. Sure, I've often browsed through and read The Signpost, but not that regularly or systematically, and I'm afraid I was usually drawn toward the more dramatic bits. So: Why not prominently add a link to Portal:Featured content? That way it would be two clicks away from every page! ---Sluzzelin talk 15:34, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
That's ... absolutely brilliant. I think I can code it so that it automatically links to the newest edition each week, too. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 15:59, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Excellent! By the way, this week's FC is done. Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:16, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Something for the Signpost

[edit]

I've prepared some material in recognition of User:Casliber's achievment of 100 featured articles – Wikipedia's second FA centurion. The text is here; you may need to cut it a bit if you're short of space. Can I ask you to pick it up – I've forgottem how to transfer it directly to Signpost. Brianboulton (talk) 23:32, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Let's see... I don't think we should put this into the Featured Content report as it's too late: Grus already appeared in it this week. Instead, let's make this a standalone, and link to it from the FC report.
There are two things that the interview needs, in my opinion: 1. A link to a list of the 100 featured articles. Ideally, I'd say make a two- or three-column table and list them all in the report (We can grab them from Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations, though we'd need to reverse the order, which is a pain). 2. Images, but I can do that once the page is live and the list is ready. I'll use them to highlight a few more featured articles. Adam Cuerden (talk) 05:32, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
It is intended as a standalone – see what I did for Wehwalt's FE century a few months ago. I don't think we need prepare a table – a link to Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations should be enough, the reverse order doesn't matter. A few images would be nice – but bear in mind that this is our second centurion, and we don't want to make more of an issue of this than of the former. Brianboulton (talk) 09:05, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, it's Wednesday, and Ed's been having connection issues, so, @Brianboulton:, if you're willing, I'd say we make up a page for it, and work up the aesthetics there. I'm not quite sure about the coloured text, but we can play around with it a bit and try to get it as near-as-possible to ready before Ed gets on, so that it can go out right away. Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:38, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
The coloured text is unimportant – that's how Cas replied, but it doesn't have to stay. I'm not really competent on production issues, but I'd say, keep it simple, get it out as soon as we can. Brianboulton (talk) 08:48, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2014-05-28/Centurion. It could use some copyediting, I think. Adam Cuerden (talk) 11:03, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Adam Cuerden, thank you very much for your help. I should be online later tonight and will give this a once-over then. Brianboulton, thanks! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 17:44, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
I more-or-less copied the format for Wehwalt's centurion run, so it should be within house style. Think I'll go back and add a list of his FAs to Wehwalt old article while I'm at it, given the increased attention it'll get. Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:16, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Adam. It looks pretty good to me, although I may tweak the title. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 00:16, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
