History

[edit]

Early Life

[edit]

Matoro started out his life as an outcast on the world of Metru Nui. There, he made a living selling small rahi as pets. When Metru Nui was destroyed by Makuta Teridax, Matoro was brought to the island of Mata Nui by the Toa Metru. He was appointed translator for Turaga Nuju, and became the only being on the island to know Nuju's language of clicks and whistles. When Matoro was returned to Metru Nui, he was confronted by his friend Jaller, who believed he had information on the whereabouts of the Toa Nuva, who were MIA. In fact, he did, but he was forbidden from sharing this with Jaller. Matoro soon left the city with Jaller and several others to rescue the Toa. In a dark tunnel, Matoro felt a hand holding his, but could not identify the source. Frightened, he quickly withdrew, not realizing he was being tested by the Mask of Life, the artifact the Toa had been sent to recover. Matoro and his friends were captured by a mythical ruler named Karzahni, but escaped via a Toa Canister. Entirely by chance, his group wound up on the island Voya Nui, where the Toa were being held.

Matoro as a Toa

[edit]

Matoro's canister was struck by lightning from a red star. This transformed him and his team into Toa. with Jaller assuming the lead, they battled the deadly Piraka and their Matoran slaves. The team split up, with Matoro and Hewkii following the Matoran Kazi to see the hero Axonn. Matoro then regrouped with the others to enter the tunnels to the Mask of Life. While the Toa retrieved the Mask, the Matoran freed the Toa Nuva from the Piraka. Matoro was revealed as the destined bearer of the Mask, and retrieved it from the guardian Vezon. However, it got knocked out of his hand during a battle, and it plunged into the sea. Matoro and the Toa followed the Mask under the water through a structure called the Cord. The Cord was damaged by a giant eel, and Matoro and the Toa spilled into the sea. They were mutated by the Mask into water-breathing Toa Mahri. After several battles with the evil Barraki and the mighty Hydraxon, and the burden of bearing the secret that Makuta Teridax was in their midst, Matoro retrieved the Mask. After destryoing the Cord and sending Voya Nui back to its original location, Matoro followed it and wound up in the core of the universe. There, he donned the Mask, and revived the rapidly dying Great Spirit Mata Nui, who would kill the universe with his death. As he returned to life, Matoran everywhere rejoiced, though Matoro was killed by the effort. He is considered the greatest hero in history by the Matoran.[2]

Matoro in alternate universes

[edit]

In "The Kingdom" alternate universe, where the Great Spirit died, Matoro is considered a failure. When Makuta broke into the Kingdom, Matoro sacrificed his life to destroy the villain. He became a hero in the universe where he had failed.

Equipment

[edit]

As a Matoran, Matoro had a light blue, powerless Kanohi Akaku and sometimes carried a Kolhii stick. As a Toa Inika, he had a white Kanohi Iden, the mask of spirit, an ice sword and a zamor sphere launcher. As a Toa Mahri, he had a silver Kanohi Tryna, the mask of reanimation (and the Mask of Life), a cuttter blade and a Cordak blaster.
