History

King Viramarmadeva of the Kadamba dynasty issued a copper-plate inscription in 1049 CE concerning a grant of a piece of land called Tudukapura in Kudtarika agrahara of Chhat sathi desha. This inscription suggests that Chhat sathi refers to modern Salcete, known as Sashtti in the local language.[1]

Salcete sub-district comprises two cities, eleven towns and thirty-five villages as per the 2011 Census of India. It has a population of 2,94,504.[2]

Salcete has eleven census towns: Aquem, Benaulim, Chinchinim, Curtorim, Davorlim, Navelim, Nuvem, Raia, São José de Areal, Varca, and Verna.

Salcete has thirty-five villages: Adsulim, Ambelim, Assolna, Betalbatim, Calata, Camurlim, Cana, Carmona, Cavelossim, Cavorim, Chandor, Colva, Deussua, Dicarpale, Dramapur, Duncolim, Gandaulim, Gonsua, Guirdolim, Quelossim, Loutolim, Macasana, Majorda, Mulem, Nagoa, Orlim, Paroda, Rachol, Sarzora, Seraulim, Sernabatim, Sirlim, Talaulim, Utorda, Vanelim, and Velim.

Comunidades

Salcete has nine comunidades: Benaulim, Betalbatim, Colva, Curtorim, Loutolim, Margao, Nuvem, Raia, and Verna.
