NUCB International College (NIC, JP: Kokusai Koutou Gakkou), located at 4-4 Sagamine, Komenoki-cho, Nisshin City, Aichi Prefecture, is a private co-educational high school with a full boarding system.

The school implements leadership education using the Harvard-style case method. It follows a September admission system with English as the official language.

NIC is the only boarding school in central Japan accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology (MEXT) to offer two qualifications: the Japanese high school certificate (as an "Article 1" school) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). All students have the opportunity to be awarded the Bilingual IBDP Diploma.

It is affiliated with Nagoya International Junior and Senior High School (IBDP school), which operates as a day school.

Overview

[edit]

As part of Aichi's Startup project and after a hiatus of 27 years, NIC received official approval from Aichi Prefecture on April 1, 2022, to be established as an “Article 1” school contribution to cultivate the next generation of global talents.

Small classes of 25 students enable personalised supervision by multinational faculty members with master's or doctoral degrees in their respective fields.

The school fully embraces the Case Method education practiced in global leadership education and features classrooms designed with reference to the MBA programme offered by its affiliated business graduate school.

The school recruits international students, Japanese nationals who have lived overseas for extended periods, and students from domestic schools. The selection process involves an interview and the CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test). While student interactions are in English, parent interactions can be conducted in Japanese, French, or Chinese.

Programmes

[edit]

In the first year (Pre-IB Programme), students intensively study the curriculum outlined by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). In the second and third years  they study subjects specified by the IBDP to work toward both international and domestic high school graduation qualifications (Dual Diploma). Apart from general subjects, learning approaches are incorporated to enhance research skills, analytical abilities, and self-management skills.

As part of NIC’s early leadership education, the school also offer a Summer School (July) and the Bridging Programme (April to June), a preparatory programme for prospective students aiming to start their studies in September.

Pre-IB Programme (Grade 10)

[edit]

The Pre-IB Programme in Grade 10 leads to the International Programme in Grade 11 -12. It serves as preparation for the academically challenging International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

The approaches to teaching and learning for the IBDP are introduced to the students at this level along with fundamental academic skill and knowledge development so that students are able to commence the IB with a degree of confidence. This year also simultaneously covers the subject requirements for the Japanese national curriculum to enable students to graduate  with  both the IB and Japanese high school diploma upon the completion of their studies.

IBDP (Grade 11-12)

[edit]

The IBDP is a highly academic two-year high school programme of study for students aged 16-19, covering Grade 11 and 12.

The subject selections for the programme have been carefully considered maximising the university and career pathway options for the students. One subject from each subject group must be selected except for Group 4, from which two subjects may be selected instead of a Group 6 subject. All non-group listed subjects, such as Physical Education and Health, are compulsory for graduation in two diplomas.

Case Method Education

[edit]

NIC affiliated business graduate school (NUCB Business School) has introduced the case method education, a leadership education method developed through years of MBA education, as an inquiry-based learning approach in all subject instruction. The institution operates the Japan Case Center (Director: Professor Shinichi Takeuchi) and has partnership relationships with international case development organizations such as Harvard, IVEY, IMD, INSEAD, and CEIBS.

The case Method is a unique and highly effective approach which actively engages students in group discussions and teamwork. It places an emphasis on involving students actively in solving problems by studying examples of situations that have occured or may occur in society in future. For leadership education, the Case Method has proven to be one of the best teaching and learning methods.

NUCB International House

[edit]

The school operates a co-educational international boarding house (NUCB International House). It employs a residential management system with a House manager, House Supervisors, and House Mentors responsible for students' living and educational guidance.

Each floor has three differently themed living areas. With large windows providing plenty of light and beautiful, modern furniture, these spaces are designed to make students feel comfortable and relaxed. The living area is furnished with sofas, tables and desks and can be used for group works. Common areas also include washrooms, a dining hall, a study room (library), laundry facilities and a prayer room.

The residence features separate floors for male and female students. The dormitory rooms are separated into two floors for men and women, with security gates at the entrance to each floor.

Dormitory rooms are arranged in a radial pattern on the outside of the circular building, offering a panoramic view of the naturally rich campus. Each bedroom is designed to be shared with 4 students and is furnished with beds, beddings, study desk, storage space, individual safety box and a shower room.

The International House at NUCB International College received the 2023 Good Design Award from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion.

Sport Facilities

[edit]

In addition to the gymnasium, the campus (200 acres) is equipped with sport facilities that allow for activities such as hard/soft tennis (7 Omni-courts), golf (165 yards practice range), archery, Japanese archery “kyudo” (short-range and long-range), table tennis, soccer, track and field, and baseball.

International diversity

[edit]

The students come from a wide range of nationalities, including Japan, the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Australia, Thailand, China, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Poland, Indonesia, Mongolia, Taiwan and Russia.

Extra-curricular & School Life

[edit]

To enrich and enhance the school experience, students engage in various extracurricular activities and in joint events with our affiliated school and university, including school festivals, sports competitions and art week. Additionally, all students are involved in planning and organising events at the boarding house. House activities include monthly off-campus excursions to nearby attractive spots, such as recreational facilities and tourist destinations where students can learn about history and culture.

Selected students can also experience summer schools at the world’s top partner universities and engage in fruitful exchanges with students from other schools abroad.
