Siew Chien Ng (Chinese: 黃秀娟; Jyutping: Wong4 Sau3 Gyun1) is a Hong Kong-based clinician-scientist and gastroenterologist. Originally from Malaysia, she currently serves as a professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where she is involved in research related to the gut microbiome and its impact on human health. Ng also holds the position of Assistant Dean (Development) at CUHK's Faculty of Medicine and has been recognized for her contributions to the field of gastroenterology.

Biography

Ng completed her secondary education at Penang Chinese Girls' High School in Malaysia. She then pursued medical studies in the United Kingdom, obtaining her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from St Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2000. She later earned a PhD from Imperial College London in 2009, specializing in gastroenterology, and completed her specialist training in gastroenterology and internal medicine during her time in London.

Career

Ng began her academic career at CUHK in 2010 as a junior faculty member, focusing on research in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD. Under the mentorship of Professor, she quickly advanced in her academic career, becoming an assistant professor in 2012, an associate professor in 2014, and a full professor in 2016. In 2018, she was appointed Assistant Dean (Development) of CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine.

Ng holds various roles at CUHK, including Director of the Microbiota I-Center (MagIC), Associate Director of the Centre for Gut Microbiota Research, and professor at the Institute of Digestive Disease. She is also involved with the State Key Laboratory of Digestive Disease and serves as an honorary consultant at Prince of Wales Hospital. Her research has focused on microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics, particularly in relation to diseases such as colorectal cancer, autism, and metabolic syndrome. In 2023, Ng was named a New Cornerstone Investigator under the New Cornerstone Investigator Program, an independent fund initiated by Tencent. This honor recognized her contributions to biological and biomedical sciences, making her the first female clinician-scientist in mainland China to receive this recognition since the program’s inception. Ng is a fellow of several professional organizations, including the American Gastroenterology Association, the Royal College of Physicians of London, Edinburgh, and Hong Kong. She has also held academic positions at The National University of Malaysia, Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University, and the University of Melbourne.

Research Interests

Ng's research focuses on several areas within gastroenterology, including: The epidemiology, genetics, pathogenesis, and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The role of gut microbiota in health and disease Faecal microbiota transplantation and microbial therapeutics.

Personal Life

Ng is married to Graham Wong, a lawyer based in Hong Kong. They have two children.
