I'm a retired university professor (Dept. of Biology, University of Michigan) who studied the biochemistry of insect-plant and insesct-microbial interactions. When I retired, I turned in my grades, turned in the key to my lab, and began a new life. I've always had an interest in military history, especially military organizational history (the Jefferson-Federalist debate about the role of a professional army vis-a-vis a citizen army) and to a lesser extent America's 18th and 19th century wars.

Also upon retiring I returned to a boyhood interest in military insignia and military heraldry. I now have a collection of the Distinctive Unit Insignia of (nearly) all Army units, both National Guard and Regular Army), with lineages that go back to 1900 or earlier. I also began trying to learn how to photograph DUIs. It's hard, because of all the reflections and highlights, but I finally got pretty good at it, and with the help of a little enhancement of the photos, I now have photographs of lots of DUIs that are (in my opinion) better than any I have seen anywhere on the web. I intend to upload them to the Wikipedia Commons for my use in Wikipedia articles about historic Army units, and also, of course, for use by others who need them.
