Hittite

[edit]

Thanks for the response: I understand the problem of transcribing information from one language to another. You might be interested to know that at the time I tok Hittite, only published Hittite grammar available was in German, & we had to use photocopies of photcopies of a rough draft for an abandoned English version. Sadly, I loaned all of my notes & photocopies to an acquaintence many years ago, & now am forced to rely on my bad memory of what we learned. -- llywrch 18:16, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

I did some scrounging around in my books & papers on the off chance I might have scribbled down the author's name of that German Hittite grammar, but I didn't find anything. For what it's worth, I took the class in 1978; maybe that fact helps you determine whether it's Hrózny's book -- or perhaps an even older work. -- llywrch 22:35, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

Wikimedia UK/Wikimania 2006

[edit]

Hi, this is a circular to Wikipedians in Ireland to draw your attention to Wikimedia UK, where the establishment of a local Wikimedia chapter for the United Kingdom (and possibly for the Republic of Ireland) is being discussed. See the talk page, as well as the mailing list; a meetup will take place to discuss matters in London in September, for anyone who can get there. On another topic, plans are being drawn up for a UK bid for Wikimania 2006, which would be conveniently close to Ireland. On the other hand, Dublin's bid was one of the final three last year - might we bid again? --Kwekubo 04:13, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks

[edit]

Thanks for the cleanup of my translation, this is the first time I have done a full article translation. You fixed everything I was unsure of and caught one embarrasingly obvious mistake :). Translation seems to be more difficult than understanding or speaking either language, my english grammar seemed to suffer. I think I will try translating a few more. Iit good practice. If you wouldn't mind I will send you a link when and if I do, thanks. --Darkfred Talk to me 14:30, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I need your help once more. This time you would have to listen to an mp3 sample file which contains a fragment in German and tell me what it says (please, write down in German and translation). Apparently, it is an imitation by a German man who participated in this song as a backing vocalist. The band was against fascism and I would really like to know what they said there. I will add this information on currently existing articles where it was featured and it will be useful for me to upload the lyrics of this song on an external source.

This is the page: http://www.tonlist.com/ViewAlbum.aspx?AlbumID=3072 , and click on “Rúdolf” to hear the mp3 (it can’t be downloaded). It is the track number 5 and the German speech starts around 00:14. I hope you could help me. By the way, if there is anything I could be useful with, please don’t hesitate to drop me a message or e-mail. It would be a pleasure. Kind regards, Luis María Benítez 12:56, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the 'welcome'

[edit]

First of all, I'm pretty sure the character's name was 'Shara'. At least in my game it was. The translations probably vary. I just looked up 'Sharra' on Wikipedia, and Marion Zimmer Bradley has written a book called "Sharra's Exile". Maybe you got that mixed up; I'm sure that if I had read the book I would most likely have had. (She usually writes huge books, so she'd have plently of time to stick the spelling on your mind.)

Thanks again for the welcome. At first, the thoughts in my mind were "Kinda late for an automatic message... blame it on the servers, huh?" Then, I saw it was actually a real person that wrote it, and that kinda made my day, even though it's almost over.

I'm afraid I'll only get to look at the links you gave me tomorrow, since it's getting kinda late here now and I've still got some chores waiting.

My RFA

[edit]

Hi, thanks for voting for me in my RFA. I was really touched at how many people voted for me! --Angr/tɔk mi 22:50, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

No, I haven't. Do you know what they talk about there? They're probably all mostly contributors on de: anyway, where I am only mildly active. --Angr/tɔk mi 11:10, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Isn't hochnäsig the same as "arrogant"? I can believe that. I'm always amazed at how pedantically written and beamtendeutschmäßig the articles at de: sound. Maybe we should start a second Wikimeeting in Berlin, for those who work more on en: than on de: and who aren't hochnäsig. --Angr/tɔk mi 19:53, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Well, Duden defines hochnäsig as "eingebildet u. töricht u. deshalb andere unfreundlich u. geringschätzig behandelnd", which is more than just "arrogant". "Stuck-up" and "condescending" come close too, but none of them includes the meaning töricht the way hochnäsig does. But "biased" isn't right at all; I think it's possible to be hochnäsig and still stick to NPOV. Anyway, the only other Berliner I can think off the top of my head is Netzrack.N, but he seems to be active only at de:, not here. --Angr/tɔk mi 07:18, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

The monthly Berlin meetings are really good, and I can assure you, we are not hochnäsig, trust me ;) There ist a meeting today in the evening, you are welcome, today or any other time. Greetings, Berlin-Attorney 22:17, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

I'am very curios regarding your thoughts of de, one of our meetings would be a perfect place to express your thoughts, we are open for criticism. Hope to see you soon, Berlin-Attorney 15:55, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

You're a sysop!

[edit]

I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. Congratulations!. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers!

Popups tool

[edit]

Congratulations on being made an admin! I thought you might like to know of a javascript tool that may help in your editing by giving easy access to many admin features. It's described at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups. The quick version of the installation procedure for admins is to paste the following into User:Lectonar/Archive 2/monobook.js:

// [[User:Lupin/popups.js]] - please include this line

document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
             + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');

popupShortcutKeys=true; // optional: enable keyboard shortcuts
popupAdminLinks=true; // optional: enable admin links

There are more options which you can fiddle with listed at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups. Give it a try and let me know if you find any glitches or have suggestions for improvements! Lupin|talk|popups 12:12, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Zu Mutter Erde

[edit]

--Elian Talk 17:03, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.
