Zhou Guanyu won the championship.

The 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship os a motor racing championship for Formula 2 cars that was sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The championship is the first season of my F1 22 Driver Career. It is an open-wheel racing category that served as the second tier of formula racing in the FIA Global Pathway. The category was run in support of selected rounds of the 2021 Formula One World Championship. As the championship was a spec series, all teams and drivers competing in the championship ran the same car, the Dallara F2 2018. The championship was contests over twenty-four races at eight circuits. It began in March 2021 with a round in support of the Bahrain Grand Prix, and ended in December where it supported the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Izz Ford makes his racing career debut with Hitech Grand Prix, partnering Estonian Jüri Vips. He aimed to win the championship after signing with the Ferrari Driver Academy. Eventually, Izz finishes third in the standings with a win.

The following teams and drivers competed in the 2021 championship. As the championship was a spec series, all competitors raced with an identical Dallara F2 2018 chassis with a V6 turbo engine developed by Mecachrome. Teams competed with tyres supplied by Pirelli. The same eleven teams who competed during the 2020 season were retained for the next three-year cycle.

Season report

Round 1: Bahrain

[edit]

Izz Ford set the fastest time in qualifying at the Bahrain International Circuit, giving him pole position for the feature race. However, the two sprint races was cancelled due to a sandstorm.

The weather gradually improved on Sunday, and conditions were fit to race. Izz had a slow start and dropped to sixth into the first corner. The shortened feature race, only due for five laps was not feat for The Rookie as he sailed passed all his rivals by lap 2. He pulled a gap of 15 seconds until the end of lap 4 where unfortunately, he had a stop-go penalty for an infringement with his car, dropping to P18 at the flag. In the end, Christian Lundgaard won the race after starting second, and Zhou Guanyu ended third after passing MP Motorsport's Richard Verschoor with just three laps to go.

Round 2: Monaco

[edit]

Zhou Guanyu claimed pole for the Monaco round feature race, with Guilherme Samaia starting from reverse pole in sprint race 1. Meanwhile, Izz challenged Alessio Deledda (who eventually finished third) but made a failed attempt at the Nouvelle Chicane, instead dropping a position to Dan Ticktum. On lap 21, The Rookie dived on the Brit at the hairpin, damaging his front wing and causing both of them to stop for 20 seconds. Ticktum was given a five-second penalty for the incident while Izz dropped to the back in 21st place. Izz made it up to 13th despite another similar incident with teammate Jüri Vips at the hairpin. This inevitably may have caused a fuel leak in Izz's car and ran out of fuel on the last lap, forced to settle for 20th place. Izz retired from the sprint race 2 after just two laps after an engine issue. In the feature race, The Rookie managed to jump up the order quickly, passing race leader Zhou by lap 7 having started seventh. He went on to lap the whole grid and win.

Round 3: Baku

[edit]

Izz claimed his second pole position at Baku. Izz started from tenth and struggled early on, but managed to finish seventh and the fastest lap in the first sprint race after being tangled up with an incident with Lundgaard, which meant Théo Pourchaire jumped two places to sixth. Marcus Armstrong won the race, forming a DAMS 1-2 ahead of Roy Nissany.

Izz lined up fourth for the second sprint race, but again, Lundgaard tangled with Izz and The Rookie fell down to last place. Bizarrely, Verschoor and Felipe Drugovich were disqualified for parking dangerously in the tangle up. He made a sterling comeback drive, despite three safety cars, driving his Hitech car forward. However, the last safety car was brought out when Izz squeezed Ticktum at the Castle Station, which damaged the Brit's front wing. After the restart, The Rookie made a sensational four-car divebomb, en route to sixth place. However, the incident with Ticktum dropped Izz to 16th place. Zhou made a great comeback to win his first race of the year, ahead of Ralph Boschung and Bent Viscaal, who featured on the podium for the first time. Zhou took the standings lead as well.

During the feature race, Izz lost positions to Pourchaire and Zhou at the start and was once again involved in a tangle, this time with Jack Aitken. Izz encountered a tire confusion and a minor mistake while warming up the tires. As a result, when the safety car was withdrawn, The Rookie found himself 25 seconds behind the last-placed driver. With only two more retirements and no additional safety cars, Izz could only manage a 16th place finish. In the meantime, Zhou overtook long-time leader Pourchaire on lap 20, securing a double victory on the streets of Baku and extending his championship lead to 40 points.

Round 4: Silverstone

[edit]

Izz secured his third pole at Silverstone. During the first sprint race, The Rookie carried a five-place grid penalty into the race for a collision with Roy Nissany. He demonstrated excellent pace to move up to eighth. However, he sustained floor damage while running over a kerb, and he lost the final points-paying position to teammate Vips. He eventually finished in ninth place, while Drugovich won the race.

During the second sprint race, Izz collided with Dan Ticktum heading into turn 1, and dropped to sixth place. However after a few mistakes, Izz fell back to eighth place, and set his sights on concentrating for points. Meanwhile, Zhou had a slow start, dropping to tenth at the start, but was making his way through the field. Eventually, Izz's car was not showing much pace, and ended in a distant seventh. Zhou had overtaken Ticktum on the penultimate lap for the lead, hence continuing his unbelievable recovery to victory.

During the feature race, The Rookie maintained his lead at the start. Izz and Zhou tussled for the lead, but in the end Drugovich and Verschoor joined the fight. The former sustained damage battling and was forced to box for a new nose. Meanwhile Zhou sustained minor damage with Izz, and Verschoor stormed into the lead of the race. He won, with Izz second.

Scoring system

[edit]

Points were awarded to the top eight classified finishers in the Sprint races, and to the top ten classified finishers in the Feature race. The pole-sitter in the feature race also received four points, and two points were given to the driver who set the fastest lap in both the feature and sprint races if that driver finished inside the top ten. No point was awarded if the fastest lap time was achieved by a driver who was classified outside the top ten. No extra points were awarded to the pole-sitter in the sprint races as the grid for the first sprint race was set by reversing the top ten qualifiers and the grid for the second sprint race was based on the results of the first race.
