Question from MoonlightVector (18:58, 31 August 2021)

[edit]

Hello, Im wondering if you can send some people to help review and fully translate https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:List_of_islands_of_Greece_by_area --MoonlightVector 18:58, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello, MoonlightVector, it's good to see you've been so active as an editor. I'm afraid your "List of islands of Greece by area" duplicates the section "Islands of Greece by size" in List of islands of Greece. There is therefore no point in continuing to work on the article. Before you start working on a draft of a new article, you should carefully check to see what already exists.--Ipigott (talk) 08:49, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
Translation Tool. MoonlightVector 12:20, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
MoonlightVector: There's no point in translating your draft as List of islands of Greece is already available in many different languages. What exactly do you need assistance with?--Ipigott (talk) 13:01, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
I said by area. MoonlightVector 13:05, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
MoonlightVector: That's why I pointed to "Islands of Greece by size". The size is based on the area. It's the same thing.--Ipigott (talk) 13:08, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
Ok then you might as well delete it. Im not working on it anymore. MoonlightVector 13:09, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Question from MoonlightVector (19:43, 31 August 2021)

[edit]

Another thing, I want you to assess this article again, Vere Bird Jr.. It has been assessed over 9 years ago and it should be time to do it again. Its not a GA anymore but probably a B or A --MoonlightVector 19:43, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

MoonlightVector: If you have concerns about the quality of Vere Bird Jr. you should bring them up on the article's talk page. Maybe you were the editor (using your ip address) who added the date of birth as October 1936. If so, you need to include a reference. Maybe you found the date in this source. I see it's url has simply been pasted in at the bottom of the reference section. It now needs to be correctly integrated into the text, perhaps immediately after the dates of birth and death at the beginning of the article. Do you need help with this?--Ipigott (talk) 09:05, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Question from Astro.gianca (19:15, 2 September 2021)

[edit]

Hi Ipigott, I hope you are fine! I made some improvement on the page I wrote on Joel Sercel, adding several additional references. Is it possible to ask for a review about the warnings added in July? Is there anything else I can improve? I would like to add a photo, however I think it wouldnìt be good with those nasty labels... Thank you for your support! --Astro.gianca (talk) 19:15, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, Astro.gianca, and thanks for keeping in touch. I've removed the tags as the article has considerably improved. Keep up the good work and let me know if you need further help.--Ipigott (talk) 20:09, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Thank you so much Ipigott! I would like to translate it into Italian and add a photo. DO you have any suggestion? Thank you again! --Astro.gianca (talk) 20:25, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

  • Thanks very much, Chrysanthemum123, and please forgive me for my misuse of pronouns. As a Brit from the early 1940s, I find it extremely difficult to adapt but I'll try to do better in the future. Many of us have been able to cope with "he/she" (or "she/he") but the "they/their/them" sequence with plural verbs for just one person is difficult to absorb. As someone familiar with Scandinavian usage, I find the Swedish solution with "hen" (instead of "han" or "hun") much easier to cope with. Pity we don't have an equivalent in English. In any case, keep up the good work and let me know if ever I can be of any further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 20:04, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Gerti Daub

[edit]

Hi there Ipigott. I had a question about the Gerti Daub article - back in August of 2020 you rated the article as "B-class" on the talk page. I confess that I did not know about article "classes" before today; the reason I bring this up is because an anonymous IP/new account has been re-adding massive amounts of unsourced/unencyclopedic material to the article, over the objections of at least myself and another editor (User:Jjj1238). Would you mind taking a look over there? Thank you. Wes sideman (talk) 12:43, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, Wes sideman, and thanks for asking for my advice. I've been looking into the editing history of this article and see that you deleted almost all the content in January 2021 and then started to re-add it. I'm afraid there's not much I can do about it.--Ipigott (talk) 13:42, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
Well, I didn't just indiscriminately "delete almost all the content" - if you actually read the content that used to be there, it was extremely un-enyclopedic and read like a film script for a dramatized version of Gerti Daub's life. Most of that material was unsourced or poorly sourced as well. There was one massive section in particular ("Behind the Curtain") that was a direct copyright violation - just Daub's own words, lifted word-for-word and pasted into the article. I'm genuinely curious if you actually looked closely at the article before you rated it "B-class". Wes sideman (talk) 13:57, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
Maybe I didn't look into the all the details of the article in sufficient detail at the time. In assessing articles, I often rely on the findings of ORES and Rater. In this case, that may have been a mistake, given your copyright claims. I suggest you continue the discussion on the article's talk page. I try to avoid involvement in potential edit wars. That said, I hope you manage to sort things out to your satisfaction. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 15:26, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Wes sideman, of course you indiscriminately deleted almost all the content of the Gerti Daub article. Anyone can see that. And to claim it was unsourced or poorly sourced is ridiculous. It is better sourced than most of the Wikipedia articles.205.154.246.89 (talk) 20:03, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Ipigott. I don’t see how Wes sideman can disagree with you and say he didn’t delete almost all the content for Gerti Daub in January, 2021. He clearly did. Nor can I understand why he wants to so badly that he will go so far as to ask you to change the B-class ratings you gave it. He says massive amounts of unsourced material is being added. That’s simply not true;it's liberally sourced. He also claims that the section “Behind the Curtain” was a “direct copyright violation” and that supports his position that you should re-examine the entry.

If you look at the revision for 03:33 14 October 2014, you will see that I was the one who contributed the “Behind the Curtain” part to the Daub entry. Please note that there was no copyright violation as I have Gerti Daub Hollmann’s express, written permission to use “Behind the Curtain.” If you doubt this, you can contact Ms. Hollmann at her website: http://gertihollmann.de and she will assure you I did not violate any copyrights. Rwgutmann (talk) 09:43, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Rwgutmann: Thanks for these clarifications. Under the present circumstances, I will not be reassessing the article. As I said earlier, I think it would be better to comment on the article's talk page where other interested editors might like to intervene.--Ipigott (talk) 09:47, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
Rwgutmann Are you the same user as Fixitrightnow, this IP, and this IP? Wes sideman (talk) 12:47, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
I guess you are. You're also (probably) Richard Gutmann, who wrote this letter about Gerti Daub. I'm sorry to see that you've been blocked. If you'd like to discuss potential changes to the article, I am listening. Wes sideman (talk) 13:57, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Question from Blaze The Wolf (19:51, 15 September 2021)

[edit]

Hello! So I'm definitely not a new user, however I decided to check out what the new user main page looked like and I noticed that it said you were my mentor. I'm just curious as to what exactly makes you a mentor and what the system uses to choose who's a mentor to who. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 19:51, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, Blaze: Thanks for your query. I've been actively editing since 2006 and in recent years have done quite a bit of mentoring, especially in connection with new contributors to wp:Women in Red. Maybe that's why I received an invitation to participate in the first experimental phase of this kind of mentoring on the English Wikipedia. I thought it would be interesting to volunteer as we certainly have a major problem in retaining new contributors, most of whom edit very little, if at all, after registering. You can see from the editing history of this page that I've been faced with quite a mixed bag of questions, with only a few newcomers seriously interested in editing. That said, apparently our efforts have paid dividends. I see you joined Wikipedia almost a year ago and that much of your editing has been in connection with the Teahouse. If you would like to become more active in creative editing, i.e. adding extensive new content to existing articles or creating new ones, please let me know. I might be able to help you along. As a high school student, there must be lots of areas you could usefully address on Wikipedia. Hope this helps.--Ipigott (talk) 09:03, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
@Ipigott: You are MOSTLY correct in me being a high school student that I have a lot of areas I could address on Wikipedia. I actually have a few classes I've hated so I"ve pretty much forgotten what I learned in those classes. I've actually received help in adding new content to an article (the article being SnowRunner) from PMC and am now currently working on adding content to another article (that article being Slime Rancher which I've already done some copyedits on). However I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer me in doing so. Thanks! Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 13:09, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Blaze The Wolf: Yes, I see you added a chunk to Slime Rancher but you failed to give a source. Maybe you could add one now? It's really important to show where information comes from. Let me know if you run into any problems. (You don't need to ping me when you add comments to my talk page - I'm alerted automatically.)--Ipigott (talk) 13:19, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Oop I forgot about you automatically getting notifs from me replying on your talk page. What chunk are you referring to exactly? All I've really done so far is change up some of the wording that's already on the page. I've also added the development section but I've left it blank for now while I'm working on finding sources for info I'm going to put in it. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 13:22, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Blaze The Wolf: It's this piece: "Some of the types of slimes available in game include, docile (not feral), harmful, non-farmable, and feral. Most slimes also have a Gordo version of themselves. These are found across the Far Far Range. Players can shoot food items at them until they explode, to gain normal versions of the Gordo slime's species. When exploded they also produce crates containing random loot as well as either a teleporter or "slime key" which allow access to new areas or fast-travel between known areas." You need to include a reference.--Ipigott (talk) 13:25, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Sorry to interrupt but...Yay!!! You found my good friend, Ian, Blaze The Wolf. When I first came to Wikipedia which was actually around the same time as you, I started out on the Cherokee Wikipedia where I made minor edits to existing articles. I shifted over to the English Wikipedia to edit articles on the Cherokee people here. I found WiR sometime right after that and immediately set out in creating articles for Cherokee women as per our Indigenous women event in August of every year. That directly led me to Ian and SusunW. I can't express what these two have meant to me as an editor here, much less how much I love them as people. There are very few that I would trust more to offer advice and assist new editors or those with experience that are just seeking to add to their own knowledge about Wikipedia than Ian. I appreciate your presence at the Teahouse, @Blaze The Wolf, and also your willingness to ask questions and take advice into consideration when it is given. Thank you for being here and contributing to this great adventure! I'll slip off into wiki-world now. 😊 💗 --ARoseWolf 13:30, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Ah ok. That wasn't something I added but it was merely something that was already there and I simply just changed up the wording. However I could try and find a source for this. I'm actually wondering if some of that came from the Slime Rancher Wiki on Fandom as I noticed that it uses the word "docile" however from my experience playing the game, it's never used the word docile (although it has used feral). Obviously my experience playing the game won't work as a reference per WP:OR, although I'm fairly sure there's a policy/essay somewhere that basically says, if something is obvious and can easily be observed, it doesn't need a reference (for example you don't need to provide a source for a human having 5 fingers. I made use of this policy/essay in SnowRunner) Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 13:32, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Blaze The Wolf: You might find it useful to look at When and why to cite sources and the other information about sources on the same page. Whenever I add content, I always include my source unless there is already a reference in the same paragraph which covers the facts. Good to hear from you ARoseWolf. Small world! Two wolves in close collaboration! Sounds like a great combination.--Ipigott (talk) 13:42, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
We do tend to run in packs! 🐺 Aaaahhhhhoooooo! lol --ARoseWolf 13:48, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Yep. lol it's kinda funny how many wolves I've run into on the internet. Anyways, I will go ahead and take a look at that and I will also try and find a source for that section. Although I might be able to use the game's "tutorial" as it basically gives you information about new things related to the game's mechanics as you discover them. Technically it's part of what's referred to as the "Slimepedia" in game, however it's a specific section that I would consider the tutorial. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 14:03, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Right now I"m actually trying to find the essay/policy that basically says that not everything requires a source. I know it has a link to a diff where someone put [citation needed] next to a statement of humans having five fingers, however I can't seem to remember what it's called. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 14:12, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Blaze The Wolf: There are several essays on excessive referencing. Maybe you were looking for Wikipedia:Citation_overkill. It's nevertheless important to make sure readers can verify the source of added content as it frequently happens that new contributors simply add their own feelings or interpretations. Reference to good secondary sources is preferable to citing primary sources. If you are particularly interested in video games, you should read Wikipedia:Writing articles on video game genres. Hope this helps.--Ipigott (talk) 15:11, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
I found it. It's WP:BLUESKY. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 15:14, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Blaze The Wolf: I certainly agree that there's no need to cite the obvious but rules and tactics in video games are hardly common knowledge. You should look carefully at some of the background articles I have suggested above. You might also be inspired to create your own article on a game or possibly on people associated with the genre. See, for example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Video games which lists some of the women involved. You could start with a draft in your user space.--Ipigott (talk) 15:27, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
I do agree with what you're saying. THere is actually a specific subject sort of related to video games that I've been wanting to create an article on, however I haven't gotten close to started because I'm afraid I'll get started and then find that there aren't enough sources available to establish its notability. That subject is an electronic music group called Hyper Potions. An article with that name did exist at one point however it simply just redirected to a specific section of Sonic Mania which they made 2 songs for. It no longer exists because of a RfD I did. Question from Kaybeesquared

[edit]

Hello - advice welcome Sam Mort article has had major deletion https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sam_Mort&oldid=1044657457 and all the details including reliable sourced verifiable statements of Mort's key actions in Afghanistan (and then her statements which differed from UK and USA military and embassy staff) during Fall of Kabul (2021) has now been deleted entirely, and replaced with a recommendation to look at Mort's entries on Twitter.

As the editor who did this is a major blogger on the region, I am not contacting him directly to dispute this as yet, but seeking your advice as the rater of the article prior to this change.

Can you advise if it makes sense to reinstate some of the points that you would have considered previously relevant in rating the content. Thank you.

Kaybeesquared (talk) 20:29, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

@Kaybeesquared: Hey Kaybee! I know I'm not Ipigott (i'm watching their talk page) however I think it would be fine if you reverted that users edit as usually if someone removes sourced information. They appear to have a reason, however they said "according to their CV" and since I have no clue what a CV is, I'm wondering if they're talking about a source that is published by the articles subject. However I think first you should probably ask Salampax about their edit just to clarify what they were talking about. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 20:41, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Blaze The Wolf but the edits related to her CV ( curriculum vitae ) are additions on her life prior to Afghanistan. In themselves they are fine, adding 'citation required' would be all that's needed. I will await rater's advice on the big deletion though. Thanks again for suggestion. Kaybeesquared (talk) 20:54, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

@Kaybeesquared: No problem! I deal with massive removals a lot and usually they're just vandals making themselves known. However this actually has an explanation (even if I don't entirely understand it) so as I said I think it would be a good idea to ask the user about their removal and try and get a clarification on their removal. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry | Discord: Blaze Wolf#0001 (talk) 21:02, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Kaybeesquared: Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Salampax has contributed very little to Wikipedia and obviously is not aware of the importance of good secondary sources. A CV is seldom a basis for developing a biography. The passages removed were well sourced and should be retained. On the other hand, the passage beginning "Mort was interviewed on China Global Television Network in Europe..." which was deleted by Amigao should in my opinion not be re-inserted. Before restoring Salapax's deletions, I suggest you leave an explanation on the article's talk page, possibly with a link to this discussion. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 08:15, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks so much, that was my feeling too overall..but I didn't want to proceed and get in an argument.Your help is much appreciated. Kaybeesquared (talk) 08:18, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

Jerichau-Baumann's mermaid paintings

[edit]

Hi Ipigott. Only very few paintings by Danish women painters have articles on Wikipedia, so I decided to create an article about Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann's 1873 mermaid painting of a mermaid with additional information about her earlier mermaid paintings. However, it turned out to be very hard to keep track of the different paintinge. Many sources seem to mix the different paintings up, throw in incorrect dates. or to match them with the wrong pictures. If you have the time and interest, I would therefore very much appreciate it if you would give my article Mermaid (Jerichau-Baumann) an extra critical look. Or if you can find additional information ot have anything to add (especially the description section should probably be improved). One of my sources (the first one cited) states that there are "at least four paintings, two in Danish museums and two in private collections abroad". Here are some of the things I am uncertain about:

  • 1861 paintings: Exhibited in Paris, sold to Wanda Zahrtmann and in 2020 sold by Bruun Rasmussen with useful information in their cataloque - no loose ends"
  • 1862: Exhibited in London. Not sold - what happened to it? And is it the painting seen here or is this really just a mirrored version of the 1873 painting with manipulated colours?
  • The painting given to Hans Christian Andersen in 1868 - at least one source mentions that it is from 1863 but can that date be trusted? It is unfortunately not included in Kunstindeks Danmark's list of works in public collections.
  • 1873 painting: Sold to Carl Jacobsen in 1877 - no loose ends!
  • One of the sources mentions(and shows) a painting which belonged to Sophie Lerche. If it is not identical with the 1862 painting exhibited in London, I then seem to count at least five paintings. And who was she/when did she own it? Furthermore, the dates for some of the images available on Wikipedia Commons seem to be wrong. In particular, one of the paintings is claimed to be from 1847 (and the cource is now a dead link) but the painting seems to be identical with the 1861 painting recently sold by Bruun Rasmussen (but with a different frame?). That she should have painted a mermaid already in 1847 sounds very unlikely and the text in the Bruun Rasmussen cataloque written by a reliable art historian states that the 1861 painting was most likely her first mermaid painting. Sorry if this all seems very confusing and again don't hesistate to just ignore these questions if you haven't got the time or interest to kooj into it.Ramblersen2 (talk) 19:59, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
  • Ramblersen2: You've put together a really interesting article here. I'll try to help with your queries over the next day or two but I'm not too confident I will be able to find useful answers.--Ipigott (talk) 06:10, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Ramblersen2: Not too sure if this is useful but in this listing from 1883 there are records of Havfrue paintings in 1862, 1873 and 1877. The 1862 painting was said to be owned by Countess V. Danneskjold-Samsøe. A painting from 1863 is mentioned here.--Ipigott (talk) 12:57, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Good find, it is indeed very useful information. Thanks!Ramblersen2 (talk) 14:21, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Ramblersen2: There's quite a bit more from Brunn-Rasmussen here.--Ipigott (talk) 14:30, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Thnka but that is the text published in the Bruun Rasmussen cataloque that I have already used. But your link is better since the reader won't have to find it far down in the link.Ramblersen2 (talk) 14:41, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Looks to me as if there's quite a bit of useful info which could be included in the article. See also this which associates the works with the Coat of arms of Warsaw.--Ipigott (talk) 14:46, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
I believe that the 1877 paintings mentioned in the 1883 must be a mistake. It mentions that it belongs to Carl Jacobsen. I therefore assumse that they are unaware that it was the 1873 painting that he purchased in 1877. Ramblersen2 (talk) 15:16, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
You are certainly correct. I don't think there's anything more I can contribute to the article's improvement.--Ipigott (talk) 15:19, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Question from Staylish star yogi official on User:Staylish star yogi official (07:45, 1 October 2021)

Staylish_star_yogi_official --Staylish star yogi official (talk) 07:45, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, Staylish star yogi official, and welcome to Wikipedia. On your talk page, you will find some suggestions on how to gain experience in editing. Please let me know if you run into any problems.--Ipigott (talk) 07:50, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

So I decided to reward myself for finishing the Americas, Oceania and 1/2 of Africa and at the same time work on the WIG editathon. Kinda keeping in the focus, I picked a woman whose nationality was stolen. It was interesting to see that you, Rosiestep and I worked on creating her in 2015. I think I am done with reverifying, translating and adding to the text, but if you have time before I nominate it, could you give it a copyedit? In particular I want to be sure her nationality situation is clear, even though I cannot state that she was stateless, because I am unsure if she ever legally repatriated to Mexico. The legal conflicts indicate that she had no nationality, but again, as I find no secondary source that says that, I didn't draw a conclusion. If you don't have time, not a problem. SusunW (talk) 20:31, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

SusunW: Interesting biography, well presented. Very little to copy edit on this. My only problem is italics. I remember not too long ago we looked into whether or not organizations in foreign languages should be in italics. It was quite clear that they should not but if you use language templates, they come out italicized. Similarly, I only italicize the English translations of publications if they have been published in English under that title. If not, I do not use italics but I see the templates you have used in e.g. Autobiography introduce italics under the trans parameter. This is probably not important but I remember one of my articles on a Danish organization was seriously criticized for use of such inappropriate italics. I spent quite some time going through all my other articles on organizations, getting rid of all the italics on their Danish names. Up to you to deal with it if you consider it important. Looks ready for nomination.--Ipigott (talk) 11:45, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, very much appreciate your input and help, Ian. I've missed our collaborations while I've been doing all these law articles. Yes, it's confusing indeed. I was always taught to italicize foreign words and titles. I never italicized a translated title until someone pointed out to me in a review that if it was a translated work, it would be italicized and I should. I have also been told numerous times to put the English name/title first and then the actual foreign name in parenthesis, but that seems totally weird, especially if the title isn't known in English. As you say, the templates operate in the exact opposite of what critiques I've been given. If you input a citation, the original title always comes first and then the translated name. Honestly, I think the rules on here are convoluted. I am sure someone will tell me to change it however I write it. ;) SusunW (talk) 12:53, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
SusunW I agree. It would help if a group of experienced editors, perhaps including seasoned librarians, got together on this and tried to sort it out once and for all. The current section on Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Text_formatting#Italic_type is not at all clear and possibly in certain cases incorrect. But getting anything like this improved is always a nightmare. Some of the templates seem to be designed to create mistakes! I've missed our collaboration too. Perhaps you can take a break from nationality for a few weeks and write more biographies.--Ipigott (talk) 13:33, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Yes, changing guidelines on here is impossible. People are entrenched in what they believe to be is "right". Nevermind that right is multi-faceted. I may have told you my student from Mexico who worked on his PhD in York was totally frustrated. Not only did English spelling differ from the American English he had learned in school and studying with me, but the punctuation was exactly the opposite in many cases. For example, AE uses "Quotes 'within' a quote", but BE uses 'Quotes "within" a quote'. Our rules seem to be a total jumble at times and the templates operate independently, IMO. I may try to get in another woman this month. I truly enjoy writing them more than writing legalize, but if I don't get back to nationality, I'll never finish. How do i edit the templates --UserA1A2A3A4A5 (talk) 04:27, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, UserA1A2A3A4A5, and welcome to Wikipedia. From your subsequent edits, it looks as if you have been able to substitute Becky Lynch for Charlotte Flair on WWE SmackDown Women's Championship and I see you have also edited the Charlotte Flair page. Your edits are no doubt justified but it is important to include references to reliable sources when you introduce such changes. It may also be useful to raise such problems on the articles' talk pages. On your own talk page, you will see there are now a number of suggestions on how you can learn more about editing on Wikipedia. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 10:01, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Okay,and also how do I add a photo UserA1A2A3A4A5 (talk) 03:08, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

UserA1A2A3A4A5There are lots of quite complex rules about adding images unless they are photographs you have taken yourself. See Wikipedia:Images. Let me know if you run into any problems.--Ipigott (talk) 06:50, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Change article title

[edit]

Hi Ipigott, I sincerely appreciate you for all your efforts.I am very grateful. I would like to change the title of the biography Benneth Nwankwoas the Reviewer suggested. Instead of being a biography, it will be an article. Please how will I change the title? Olugold (talk) 18:10, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Olugold: I really do not understand your question. Biographies are articles -- so no change is necessary. Which reviewer are you referring to? I cannot see any comments on the talk page.--Ipigott (talk) 19:24, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Ipigott: From one of the links on the previous Reviewer's response (Theroadislong), I read about biographies. For instance, instead of the title to be 'Benneth Nwankwo' it will be Benneth Nwankwo Media(BN Media) or Benneth Nwankwo Photography. If I write on any of these, then it is not really a biography.

So my question is how to change the initial title from Benneth Nwankwo to Benneth Nwankwo Media (BN Media). Since according to the link in Reviewer's response (Theroadislong), Benneth Nwankwo might not be notable enough for a biography on Wikipedia.

Hope you understand my question. Olugold (talk) 20:15, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Olugold: The article has now been accepted on notability grounds as a biography. There had been a lot of confusion about the article since 2015 when it was first refused on notability grounds and then protected against further creation. The reviewer, who is not an administrator, was relying on several previous refusals as well as on its protection when making a suggestion in regard to changing the title. But in the meantime, a highly experienced administrator has lifted the protection and encouraged me to improve the article, then move it to article space. As you probably realize yourself, the achievements of Nwankwo have developed considerably since 2015. In my opinion, that is the main reason why the biography is acceptable as it is, without any need to change the name. I would not have spent several hours a day over the past few days trying to get the article accepted if I had not been convinced it met Wikipedia requirements for notability. It has now been in mainspace for a couple of days and has not been the subject of any further reviews. I therefore strongly urge you not to consider changing the title but rather to continue to make any useful additions to the article as Nwankwo's career evolves. I have noticed that you are preparing another biography which you hope to submit to African Ciné Month. Your current draft contains 112 words of running text - so you will have to expand it quite a bit if you want to submit it. You also need to make sure it is backed by good secondary sources. I've moved it to Draft:Luchy Donalds with your preferred spelling. By comparison, Benneth Nwankwo now has 289 words of running text. Let me know if you need further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 10:15, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
Ipigott: I am sincerely grateful for your efforts and guidance in this regards. I am not aware that the article has been submitted before in 2015.

I will continue making improvement on Benneth Nwankwo article as you suggested and kindly disregard the change of article name since it has been moved to mainspace. Thank you for moving drafts to Luchy Donald's. I'll take your advice on expansion and backing with reliable sources. I will definitely contact you for further assistance. Thanks once again.Olugold (talk) 11:34, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

I am so sorry Ipigott. As at the time I sent the above question on 'changing the article title' I was not aware that Benneth Nwankwo has been moved to the namespace. Please I'm really sorry for all the inconveniences my ignorance might have caused you. Kindly bear with me. Thank you for all you do. Olugold (talk) 14:22, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

Olugold: Don't worry about it. Wikipedia is full of complexities. Little by little you'll become more familiar with them.--Ipigott (talk) 14:28, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

Question from Preciousb101 on User talk:Ipigott (00:38, 4 October 2021)

Hi! Ipigiott I was wondering if you could please teach me how to edit because I am a newbie from Botswana in Southern Africa --Preciousb101 (talk) 00:38, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Good to hear from you again, Preciousb101. One of the best ways to gain basic experience in editing is through The Wikipedia Adventure. You'll also find some useful links on your talk page showing where you can learn more about editing. Keep in touch!--Ipigott (talk) 06:46, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Please do assist me because i am only (redacted) years old and i wanna be an author when i grow up Preciousb101 (talk) 20:11, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
@Preciousb101: Well first you might want to take a look at Advice for younger editors as you revealed your age on a publicly accessible page which is considered personal information (while I myself don't care if people know how old I am, I have requested oversight just in case). ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:17, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
ooh i am really sorry for revealing my age ,i did not read the wikipedia:Advice for younger editors Preciousb101 (talk) 20:28, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
@Preciousb101: It's alright! That's the entire reason WP:OVERSIGHT exists, for situations like this where a younger editor accidentally reveals some personal info. BAsically what Oversight does is it make oversighted content unable to be viewed by normal users (and occasionally admins). If you'd like more help feel free to start a discussion on my talk page (That was this doesn't get too long). ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:33, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Please don't mind me asking but doesn't Wikipedia have competitions Preciousb101 (talk) 20:38, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
@Preciousb101: Yes and no. THere are pseudo-competitions in an attempt to help reduce some of the many backlogs on pages such as WP:AFC which basically encourage editors to clear as much of the backlog as they can in the amount of time given (usually about a month). However these are never something any editor is required to participate in. Then there are bad competitions, which usually consist of content disputes and/or edit wars. They usually result from 2 editors who disagree with each other on what should be added to an article. However there are ways to avoid these types of competitions, mainly bold, revert, discuss, which is a process that can be used to prevent a content dispute from ever happening. You make a bold edit, it gets reverted, and then instead of immediately reverting again (which is the cause of many edit wars) you start a discussion on the talk page about the edit in hopes to reach a consensus. An example of a delayed version of this process is List of Roblox games which resulted from me making a bold edit (which is removing a whole section on the main Roblox article dedicated to popular games on Roblox), having it get reverted, and then a few months later (after I had immediately reverted again and then got reverted by the same user who reverted me last time) I started a discussion to possibly create a list dedicated to popular Roblox games which is how List of Roblox games came into existence. Apologies if this is a bit long, I figured that the stuff involving content disputes and edit wars was important to explain thouroughly. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:16, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Assistance

[edit]

Hi Ipigott, I am here again. Please can go through this Luchy Donalds? Please Do not hesitate to point out areas that needs improvement. Thank you! Olugold (talk) 20:08, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Olugold: The article seems to be coming along very well. You will see I have edited a bit to bring it in line with normal Wikipedia presentation. For example, I removed her age from the introduction and the box as it will no longer be correct next year. I also corrected the corresponding date of birth category and made some general copy edits. The weakest section of the article is "Selected filmography" which does not contain any references. It would probably be better just to include the movies for which you can find specific sources. The article currently runs to 192 words or 1221 bytes of running text (i.e. omitting titles, bullet points, etc.) which is sufficient for the Africa Ciné Contest. I moved the article to mainspace but you can still make improvements.--Ipigott (talk) 09:19, 5 October 2021 (UTC))

@Ipigott I am very grateful for all you do. Thank you so much for moving the article. I'll definitely work on the "selected filmography." Olugold (talk) 16:10, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

@Ipigott Hi. I have edited Luchy Donald's article as you adviced. Kindly go through another draft please, Joyce Kalu. Thank you. Olugold (talk) 16:10, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

Okay, so you motivated me. We went from this pretty bad and uncited article (who does that on a BLP?) to what it is now. I am hoping and praying that you have time to look at it and give it a copyedit. The English needs to be "Britishized" (or is that Britishised?) and I am not at all sure about the writing section, as I never quite know what is important to put in. The only two things that I could not discover were whether she married Karl J. Stahl and what the name of her essay is in Schicksal Afrika? I removed the claim about Stahl because it is a BLP and I find nothing. I'm gonna ask GRuban to look at it too, he has found more photos for me. If you are too busy, I understand and I'll get someone else to review the text before I nominate it on WIG's drive. SusunW (talk) 21:07, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

SusunW: I've been through this for copy editing. The writing section looks fine but somewhere you mention her non-fiction works without any further coverage under "Writing" although you do mention them under "Selected works". Here it might be useful to specify which are non-fiction and which are novels. I'm surprised nothing comes out of Authority control, although there's plenty in World Cat and she's also covered in LOC. Perhaps Rosie can help with this. It seems to me that articles like this do far more to promote an understanding of women's nationality issues than your country-by-country coverage, important though it is. I'll see if I can help later with your two queries.--Ipigott (talk) 10:34, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
SusunW, fabulous biography; amazing woman. You have really done her justice. I agree with Ian regarding how this biography in particular promotes an understanding of women's nationality issues, though, of course, the pillars of the topic are the country-by-country articles. BTW, I just ordered Unity's novel, Far and Beyon', from Amazon used. Ian, regarding Authority Control, I'm pinging the librarians @Gamaliel and Megalibrarygirl as they are better suited than me to research this. --Rosiestep (talk) 12:23, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you both for your comments. I don't disagree that the stories are more fun to write (and help explain the impact) than the legalese, but I think the legalese is important background. When I write the legal overview, I intend to include both Arizmendi and Dow. Arizmendi because her situation explains so well how women ended up stateless. Dow because hers explains the issue of legitimacy/illegitimacy. There is a New Zealand woman, Miriam Soljak, whose story is illustrative of women who lost their nationality as enemy aliens through vagueness in the law, which seriously needs work too. I am sure there are tons of others I will uncover. I hope you enjoy her book Rosiestep. Going there now to look at the changes. If you can uncover answers for the 2 questions, Ian, that'd be great. Can definitely split her fiction and non-fiction sections. Will work on that. As always, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help. SusunW (talk) 13:36, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
What a great article, not sure how I could improve it any! I'm working on an African literature project for work, coincidentally, so I can consult some of those sources to see if I can find anything about her. Gamaliel (talk) 13:38, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Woo Hoo! Thanks Gamaliel. I am guessing, Ian, the authority control issue is that she is African. I cannot tell you how many Hispanic women I have written about who have published tons and tons of works and have zero, zip, nada even in worldcat. On the works, I just looked at it again. I think it better to divide it into Academic and Literary than fiction and non-fiction. For example, I Know You Still Love Me and Saturday Is for Funerals are both non-fiction. I didn't find a review of the former, so didn't write about it in the writing section, but I did discuss Saturday... there. Does that work? SusunW (talk) 14:44, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
  • SusunW: On Unity Dow's dealings with Horst Köhler, you might be interested to see that she participated in "Partnerschaft für Afrika", attending the conference "Herausforderungen des Wandels – Afrikanische und deutsche Antworten" (Challenges of Change - African and German Responses) in November 2007.[1] I'm afraid I haven't been able to find the title of her contribution to Schicksal Afrika but I have found this account of her contribution where she begins "I'm ready to learn from you but you must also be ready to learn from us." and goes on "The problem with Africa is that it doesn't believe in its own wisdom... Africa is used to listening to the West and as a result is failing to develop its own identity. For hundreds of years everyone has wanted to be like the West. Our young people are now beginning to wonder whether that is right." Hope this helps.--Ipigott (talk) 16:04, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
  • SusunW: On Stahl, from this announcement, it does not look as if they were married. On the other hand, this article refers to Stahl living with his African wife -- but she is not specifically named. He states however "Meine Frau ist oberste Richterin am High Court in Botswana..." (My wife is the highest judge at the High Court in Botwana...) and goes on to enlarge on her other achievements, especially in regard to encouraging women. It's an interesting article. You should read it in machine translation.--Ipigott (talk) 16:31, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Excellent sleuthing Ian! Thank you. I had the same problem on Köhler's book. Everything just seemed to obscure the work of the contributors. Most accounts listed him as the author, but clearly he was the editor of other people's chapters. I'm working on the article on the case right now, as it was almost as bad as the article on Dow herself, but at least it had some references. I'll pop back to Dow in a bit. SusunW (talk) 16:40, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
I am satisfied he is her husband. Enough of the details in the piece, (they will be at Columbia University together in 2009, High Court Judge, AIDs work, etc.) coincide. Besides which it solves another mystery. He says his wife is "a member of the Bakgatla tribe". I searched and searched for her indigenous heritage and only found that she referred to a great-grandmother who was Mosarwa. Just did a search and first found this (p 102) but that doesn't make it remotely clear if she is talking about herself or just giving an example. Then a found this "...High Court Judge, Unity Dow, and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, Segakweng Tsiane, both members of the Bakgatla tribe..." clenches it for me. Definitely he is her husband. SusunW (talk) 18:39, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
And I just found the last piece, by searching "Schicksal Afrika", "Horst Köhler", "Inhalt" page 4! SusunW (talk) 19:26, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

advice on a DYK

[edit]

Hi Ian, I have gotten drawn into helping try to get a DYK over the line but the reviewer is asking for a lot of edits, and I can't tell if he just doesn't want to pass it, or if this is really necessary for its approval. It's for Inger K. Frith, the first woman to run an international sports federation. It was initially posted by another editor, and three editors have now made edits to try to meet his demands, but the reviewer is not satisfied. Could you review it? The reviewer wants more details in all the references. I was going to give up but it seems a shame not to have it as A DYK; she is in interesting woman. Thanks!PMCH2 (talk) 23:15, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

PMCH2: I'll see if I have time for this later today but the reason I don't participate in DYK is precisely because of this kind of frustrating experience.--*Ipigott (talk) 06:24, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
  • I've done some more detailed copy editing and looked carefully through the review. It looks to me more like a GA exercise than just a simple DYK. Several editors have now worked on the article, trying to address the points raised by the reviewer. It seems to me to be unfair of him to refer to use the term "plain sloppy" after all these efforts. Maybe other editors familiar with DYK who read this page would like to step in. I try not to get too involved in DYK myself but it would indeed be a pity if the article were to fail to make it.--Ipigott (talk) 11:26, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, Ian. I appreciate you taking the time to look it over and edit. This did seem to be a very strict reviewer, so it helps to get another opinion. PMCH2 (talk) 16:31, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Glad to see things are progressing.--Ipigott (talk) 13:30, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Gerda's October corner

[edit]
October songs

Today: DYK #1700, and I uploaded more images, mostly blue and green, for hope. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:34, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Always good to hear from you Gerda. Congratulations on your 1700th DYK. It seems to have caused less trouble than the one mentioned above. Nice picture too. I see Oberauroff still needs to be covered in English (as does Niederauroff), although I see you've done a bit of work on Idstein.--Ipigott (talk) 13:15, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Did you see the other pics? ... many more little places - however, I'm more concerned about the block of the creator of #1700. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:23, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt I checked into some of the contributors and couldn't find any that had been blocked. Over the years, you've created lots of outstanding photos, especially your country . I was once involved in a team creating DYKs but it broke up a few years ago when an admin attacked our Indian team mate to such an extent that he stopped editing. Since then, I've never been too keen to contribute but I'm always happy when enthusiasts nominate my articles.--Ipigott (talk) 19:31, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, - perhaps I wasn't clear, I meant the precise article on top of the linked talk page version, pictured DYK today, translated by LouisAlain who was blocked in an AN thread which I find sickening, by sheer length. Nobody wants to touch it. LouisAlain left before being blocked, - it's just sad, - as if we didn't loose too many by death. Why make editing frustrating for colleagues? - Drop me a hint when you think an article should be known better. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:44, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Gerda Arendt: Yes indeed, it's certainly yet another sad story. I spent about 15 minutes going through the discussion but could not see any specific reference to "lies about machines translation" or whether this is a total, indefinite block. As for using machine translation, some of our most revered and competent editors use it with little or no knowledge of the language(s) in question. I frequently find I have to edit out serious mistakes. In reviewing new articles, I constantly discover reviewers' tags encouraging editors to expand their articles on the basis of a version in a foreign language. In such cases, many of them naturally turn to machine translation.--Ipigott (talk) 10:23, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, feel understood. The discussion is a swamp, and nobody wants to wade in. He was indeffed to force him to ask for conditions (see my talk, look for "I'm happy to unblock immediately"), and I can imagine he is too proud to oblige. - At least I was when restricted. - On the current DYK of Portal:Germany, five of the eight DYK were translated by him, and without him, we won't have these topics. What a senseless loss of content. There was a brief post-block-discussion, closed/silenced the same day. Wikipedia would have been better if the whole thread had not happened, imho. Perhaps you can offer a view in my general last question on AN? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:37, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
    • Gerda Arendt: I admire your fortitude on AN but I really don't want to get involved in the discussion there. As for "translating" articles from other language versions, I agree that as far as possible the EN version should include in-line references for each paragraph. Although a large percentage of my biographies are based on the fact that a person has been covered in another language (or appears in Wikidata), I seldom actually translate anything. Instead I try to find suitable sources and create the English version from scratch, frequently relying on recognized biographical dictionaries and data bases. This of course takes far longer that simply producing a rapidly post-edited machine translation but the result is far more reliable and keeps reviewers happy. Nevertheless, I certainly recognize that many excellent articles in the EN wiki have started out as word-for-word translations from versions in other languages. Providing editors like you are prepared to take the time and trouble to make improvements, this seems to be a good general approach to improvement. As you have emphasized yourself, the huge number of translations Louis has made from French and German represent a considerable enhancement of topics of cultural interest in the countries concerned. I don't know of any other editor who has bee able to create up to eight new articles a day on the basis of versions in other languages -- since May almost exclusively from German. As referencing in German is so different from that in English, your suggested template seems sensible but it could also attract closer examination by reviewers. I'm never too sure how much efforts to improve things on Wikipedia can backfire.--Ipigott (talk) 09:22, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, feel understood which is a nice change. I just met a user who adds the "more citations needed" upon article creation, - another possible approach. Today, mostly black&white, and standing upright as Psalm 15 says. I see coverage of Central European topics going to be reduced drastically, which is wrong if we want to fight the bias towards UK and U.S., but I'll let it go at this point. LouisAlain had many women among his creations, - it's just sad from a pov focused on content. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:41, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

New day: I have a ticket for Maskarade, on Halloween ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:47, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Today: see yourself, read about a hymn praying to not be on earth in vain, about a comics artist whose characters have character (another collaboration of the "perennial gang", broken by one of us banned), and in memory of the last prima donna assoluta, Edita Gruberová. I had to go to two grave sites last week, one who died now, one who died 10 years ago, so standing upright and in black seems appropriate. More colours - but subdued - can be had on hikes, - updated. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:55, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Question from TreborAl42 (07:04, 9 October 2021)

[edit]

Hello! I recently edited the Wikipedia page for "Cultural Identity" as it had a random "oh no h no", likely from a confused user who pressed the edit section. However, I noticed that I got a -15 when I was checking and it was at once reverted to the wrong version. I don't honestly know how the + and - number beside one's edit works but clarifying this would help greatly! Attached is the screenshot of the edit history for the Wikipedia page (https://imgur.com/YdDmj4H). Sorry in advance for not being as active as I seek to only casually edit pages when errors do appear. Thank you very much and keep safe! --TreborAl42 (talk) 07:04, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, TreborA142, and welcome to Wikipedia. It looks to me as if Kleuske, an experienced editor, thought that as this was one of your very first edits, you were removing useful text from the article. I see that you reverted the edit and that the offending "oh no no" has now been removed. In such cases, it is sometimes useful to explain things on the editor's talk page rather than just reverting. I have left a welcome message on your talk page with some links which should help you to gain experience in editing. Please let me know if you run into any further difficulties. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 09:37, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
I accidentally hit the revert button and corrected (i.e. reverted) myself within a few seconds. I should have placed a welcome template, but had different things on my mind at the moment. Apologies for the inconvenience. Kleuske (talk) 10:28, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Kleuske: Thanks for the quick response. Glad to see this has been sorted out.--Ipigott (talk) 10:34, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Review

[edit]

Hi Ipigott. Please can you review this article Joyce kalu? Kindly point out those areas that needs to be modified. Thank you for all you do. Olugold (talk) 08:26, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Olugold: I've tidied up the article a bit, mainly by reducing excessive capitalization. It looks as if you could expand it on the basis of some of the existing sources. As with your last article, it would be good if you could provide sources for the filmography section.--Ipigott (talk) 09:22, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
okay. I'll do as you have suggested. Thank you. Olugold (talk) 11:56, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

BEER FOR YOU

Hi Ipigott, thank you so much. I noticed some moments ago that 'Joyce Kalu's' article has been moved to mainspace. I will translate it immediately. I have also started another article Love Castle. It is a film produced by a woman which I found on the redlist of Afrocine contest. Can you please go through it and point out areas that needs to be worked on? I am grateful for all you do Olugold (talk)

Hi. Just to let you know about this nomination. Any way you can move it forward would be appreciated. Thanks. Roundtheworld (talk) 08:21, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, Roundtheworld, for bringing this to my attention but I am no expert on DYK procedures. As far as I can see, it seems to be progressing. If there is a problem of sourcing the hook, it may help to simplify it.--Ipigott (talk) 08:30, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I was just worried that, apart from User:Dumelow's excellent intervention there had been no other reaction. Roundtheworld (talk) 08:43, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
Don't worry too much, sometimes it takes weeks until a nomination gets a response. If nobody beats me I'll review. First I have to sing in choir for a funeral, though. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:47, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Okay, the last one I can do this month for WIG. If you have time to give it a look through, I'd appreciate it. If not, no worries. SusunW (talk) 19:30, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

SusunW: I'll probably have time for this on Friday.--Ipigott (talk) 05:45, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
No worries, Ian. When you get to it. I appreciate you. SusunW (talk) 12:54, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Done, but there was really not much to do. Fits nicely into Oceania too. I red-linked Katy Soljak. As both a painter and a singer, she seems to have sufficient coverage for an article in her own right. If I'm not too busy, I'll try to put something together myself although I'm not too keen on BLPs.--Ipigott (talk) 10:26, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you so much. Yes, you note that I've picked people from different geographical places because I think it will make a better example of the the different problems and how they were global. I also did Unity Dow, in spite of her being a BLP, because she shows that it wasn't just a "19th century phenomenon", which I hear a lot. I wish I'd saved some of the research I'd done on Katy. (That's her stage name, she has another, but I don't remember what it is). You're the best! Truly appreciate the help. SusunW (talk) 14:18, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
SusunW: After looking into her background, I don't think I'll write about Katy/Katie Soljak as she seems mainly to be a pop singer. Maybe more competent New Zealanders will be interested in changing her red link to blue. I've mentioned her on wp:New Zealand.--Ipigott (talk) 11:25, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Did I ask anyone for mentorship? Why did I receive a notice that you were my mentor? If I did indeed ask, thanks. --BusterD (talk) 04:21, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

BusterD: I used to be an admin in my professional life. Now I am retired, I thought I would give it a break.--Ipigott (talk) 07:49, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
There is wisdom in your reply. Enjoy being merely a responsible, pleasant, and helpful person. I now need to find out how one appears as "mentor" in the help panel. BusterD (talk) 07:56, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) @BusterD: The answer to your question about how you become a mentor is you add yourself to this list. Nice of you to drop in before your long winter break. I must say I've been really struck by the courage and vitality you've shown during the long, difficult months you were fighting for survival this year. I sincerely hope you'll have an easier time this winter and will fully recover your strength when the days brighten up again. If ever you think I can help in any way, just let me know. Otherwise I look forward to your next Wikipedia season in the Spring. It's good to see you are now together with your dear daughter, your brothers and your friends. I'm sure they'll keep your spirits up. Thanks for all the wonderful messages of hope and conciliation you've given us all during the difficult days of 2021. Take care, yourself, Asareel, and enjoy the warmth of companionship in the cold months ahead. Maybe like last winter, we'll have the pleasure of seeing a few edits from you from time to time before you re-emerge fully next April. DYK nomination help

[edit]

Hello @Ipigott, I first nomination on DYK regarding Doreen Nabwire, its been checked and I have been asked to add more hooks. I need some help on that. I hope you can give me a hand. Template:Did you know nominations/Doreen Nabwire Thanks. Ampimd (talk) 16:22, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Ampimd: The hook looks fine to me but I'll try to find another one later. Maybe a page-watcher can help. Rather busy at the moment.--Ipigott (talk) 16:48, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
I thought it was fine as well. Thanks. Ampimd (talk) 16:58, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
Let's just try to keep the hook you suggested. It seems really appropriate to me.--Ipigott (talk) 21:35, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
Since the above person also asked for help on a DYK nomination I'm wanting to ask you something. I'm wanting to nominate Euro Truck Simulator 2 for a DYK with something relating to how it's the first game to have a truck announced through it, however I'm refraining from doing so because of the requirements to actually nominate an article for a DYK. 1. New; the article I'm wanting to nomninate is definitely not new, however this confuses me as I often see older articles as a DYK.. 2. Length; I don't think this'll be too much of an issue. 3. Cited Hook; It says "The hook should include a definite fact that is mentioned in the article and interesting to a broad audience", the part I bolded I don't understand since most of the time the facts in DYK don't seem to fall under this criteria. 4. Within policy; I'm working on improving the article so I'll make sure it falls under Wikipedia's policies. 5. Review requirement (QPQ); this is the thing that is really preventing me from nominating it after I improve it, I don't feel like I would be able to properly review another DYK nom. Mind helping me out with explaining these? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:59, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
  • Blaze The Wolf: If you want to nominate "Euro Truck Simulator 2" for DYK, it seems to me it will need additional work before you go ahead. It might be easier to nominate an article created over the last couple of days.--Ipigott (talk) 21:38, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
I know it needs additional work. And I am actually planning on doing some of that additional work in due time. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 02:32, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
  • Blaze The Wolf: OK, then you can nominate it after you have completed work on it. As for QPQ, if this is your first DYK, you don't need to do it. I actually don't participate in DPQ as I find it takes up a lot of time and often ends in frustrating disagreements. I am nevertheless happy if someone nominates one of my new articles or if articles I've helped to edit reach DPQ.--Ipigott (talk) 06:51, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware

[edit]

On 10 November 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware (pictured), daughter of Asante ruler Opoku Ware II, simultaneously served as Ghana's ambassador to six countries? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Question from FmlA$ap (01:23, 13 November 2021)

[edit]

How do I get an author to stop reverting edits and amendments made for the sole purpose or completing the page. --FmlA$ap (talk) 01:23, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

  • Hi there, FmlA$ap, and welcome to Wikipedia. Explanations of why your additions to Maid (miniseries) have been reverted are given on your talk page. As you are a new contributor, I recommend you accept the views of editors who have gained experience. If you nevertheless disagree with their approach, you should discuss your differences on the article's talk page or on the talk pages of the editors concerned. I think nevertheless it would be more constructive to move on to other articles, making sure any changes or additions you make are backed by reliable sources. I've added a "Welcome" section to your talk page where you can find links to useful guidance. You might also like to gain some basic experience in Wikipedia editing with The Wikipedia Adventure. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 07:05, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

assistance and review request

[edit]

Hi Ian - I seem to be in trouble again - would be most grateful for your assistance and review - thank you!

It seems some edits, requested on the Talk Page (and heavily reviewed by a number of editors who were involved in the AfD) have been actioned. They have now been reverted by the very aggressive editor who identifies as an exclusionist - and instigated the original AfD of the page Sadia Sadia. My guess is that he's (I am assuming it's a he) is preparing to launch another AfD attack in a few months' time. Do you think you might review the page and the (recently reverted) edits and see where it stands? I am at my wits' end, have no idea why my profile seems to have attracted such aggression and hostility from this individual. Thanks again, GreenForestRanger (talk) 10:56, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

GreenForestRanger: I've looked into the passages which were added and subsequently deleted. The basic problem is the sourcing. Some of the sources are articles written by Sadia Sadia herself while others just contain her name without any supporting information. If you want to enhance the article, then I strongly suggest you draw on substantial reports from published books, recognized journals and newspapers or in critical assessments, including awards, etc. Loveboba is an unexperienced editor and has only ever edited on that one day, 7 November. It is not surprising the edits were not accepted.--Ipigott (talk) 11:27, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
I see that there have been similar problems with Loveboba's edits to Ava Cadell. It's certainly not a good idea to encourage a new contributor to act on behalf of a paid editor.--Ipigott (talk) 11:34, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ipigott - Thanks but I have no idea who Loveboba is - the edit request has been sitting in a queue and I have no idea who picked it up or why. The requested edits were posted on the Talk Page 3 all of which have third-party sources. None of these sources were written by me. GreenForestRanger (talk) 11:57, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

(apologies - I see reference to a few academic publications written by Sadia Sadia and published by major publishers such ISEA 4 and Brill 5) - do peer reviewed publications in major academic journals not qualify as substantive in support of creative or academic practice? Thanks, GreenForestRanger (talk) 12:09, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

GreenForestRanger: Then you need to remove them and base any requested additions on good secondary sources. No, irrespective of the publisher, sources written by the subject of a biography do not qualify.--Ipigott (talk) 12:11, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

The other sources include the institutions own websites (Sydney Dance Company, for example); the UK trade paper Music Week 6 and the proceedings of the UK House of Commons (in the case of the TUC Respect Unite Against Racism edit) - are these also not considered good secondary sources? Thanks, GreenForestRanger (talk) 12:20, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

GreenForestRanger: The sources themselves are OK but we need substantial descriptions clearly mentioning the involvement of Sadia Sadia, not just the inclusion of her name. If there are important items which cannot be properly sourced, they could for example be mentioned in the Chimera profile linked from External sources.--Ipigott (talk) 12:30, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Ipigott I'm clearly no judge but I think such description exists in the Music Week 7 article (Farmer, Neville, ‘In The Studio: TUC United Against Racism ‘RESPECT’, Music Week (UK), 22 June 1996, p. 30.) in relation to the requested 'TUC Respect Unite Against Racism' edit. I have a print copy but I think you may have access to resources that I don't. Thanks again, I appreciate the clarification GreenForestRanger (talk) 12:40, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Unity Dow

[edit]

On 15 November 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Unity Dow, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in Botswana, writer Unity Dow (pictured) took legal actions as a plaintiff, legal counsellor, and judge to challenge gender discrimination and protect indigenous rights, before becoming a legislator? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Unity Dow. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Unity Dow), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. November songs

Thank you, great to see her pictured! Yesterday, on a friend's concert day, 3 DYK, Brahms depicted + sadly Aga Mikolaj (listen!). May the roads that we travel make us meet again! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:17, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

As you know, Gerda Arendt, this was SusunW's achievement. I see more and more of your German titles on DYK. Impressive! I would say "May our paths cross again."--Ipigott (talk) 14:27, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
I gave it to Susun first ;) - but strongly believe in teamwork. Thanks for the poetry, - I tried to paraphrase the Irish saying "May the the road rise to meet you". I predict that without LouisAlain, the German titles will decline, - I can't help. He wrote/translated Aga Mikolaj, - without him, I'd not known here. Such a loss! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:39, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
It's actually an Irish blessing or hymn, translated from the Irish Gaelic.--Ipigott (talk) 15:07, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
I get by with a lotta help from my friends. Most of what I do on here benefits from the help and input of others. I rely on Ian to help me proof and hash out text, as well as for language. I know I can always count on you Gerda to help with DYK. I miss Yoninah's guiding hand. I am so appreciative of both of you and the efforts you make to help me and others improve articles. DYK for Miriam Soljak

[edit]

On 21 November 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Miriam Soljak, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Miriam Soljak, after fighting to recover her New Zealand nationality for nearly three decades, was told that the government considered she had never lost it? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Miriam Soljak. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Miriam Soljak), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add NoACEMM to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:12, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Mary Chenoweth Pownall

[edit]

We voted a KEEP for Mary Chenoweth Pownall. Somehow, it became a merger in a short time. Please help with voting this article back to standalone. Thanks, SWP13 (talk) 16:49, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

Aimée-Olympe Desclée

[edit]

I decided I would give it a go and try to do one of the more historical actresses on the list. It was more then a challenge, but I think I did ok with it.

Can you look at it when you have a chance?

I also went to add the banner and it's linking to the Ray page. Can you please help me with the talk page of Aimée-Olympe Desclée? Somehow it's linking to the other actress page I created. Table at dorsia (talk) 18:36, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

Table at dorsia: You've done a good job on this one. I've added a couple of references and slightly modified the text to respond to the calls for clarification. I can't see any problems with the talk page. You can add a suitable banner.--Ipigott (talk) 07:51, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! I am glad I did good. Thank you for the cleanup as well. I did end up figuring out the talk page. Have a great day! Table at dorsia (talk) 15:06, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Question- Would it be ok to ask about whether it would be ok to ask?

[edit]

I am not an academic, but I am a bit piffed about new editors (especially women) are treated. May I ask Does anyone know a female NPP? and Would being able to set their user page/talk to private/block certain people help? (They could still receive messages via alerts/in box? ) Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 12:33, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

  • Wakelamp: I'm not sure exactly what you are suggesting. Many women, including WiR collaborators, patrol new pages and take part in AfD discussions. I certainly don't think any would like to see restrictions on their user talk pages. There are nevertheless frequently problems when deserving articles are refused at AfC. This can discourage new contributors to the extent that some discontinue editing completely. Fortunately, as a number of WiR participants play an active role in AfC reviews, things have recently improved. We now have a bot-driven list of declined drafts, some of which are found suitable for mainspace. If you are interested, you could see if there are any you consider suitable or which deserve to be brought up to mainspace requirements. I see you have created three biographies yourself (all on men). It would be good to see a few on women. If you need any assistance, just let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 12:58, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
Thank-you for answering the questions - there is no need to post. I have just spent most of my time as an editor being a wiki-gnome on IP or wakelamp. I won't add all the refs for the points below as I now understand that this is not part of WiRs remit.
    1. I tried to create a female bio one - Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brandon Merrill I wrote 'My concern is that what may be an acceptable notability for a dominant cultures such as China and America, may not be for minorities who may not have the same options". Then I read notability, saw the high failure rate, and gave up. (I don't actually remember the men :-)).
    2. I am glad that there are women doing NPP. Some articles showed that imale editors were far less likely to create low character edits (a sign of npp), and far more likely to create content, collarboarate, avoid conflict, have their talk answered, ... Experienced women editors tend to be more ok with conflict, but there seems to be a link for prolific female editors to leave after a series of reverts, conflict on article talk, followed by conflict on their talk.
    3. The ability to block a particular user was to create a safe place, An RfC recently discussed semi protect of user, but it thought it unjustified based on the number of requests. This was both
    • Selection bias, as the current policies advise you not to complain - Wikipedia:Harassment#User_space_harassment, Wikipedia:KEEPOFF "it is not enforceable to tell someone to stay of your talk page", Wikipedia:RPA "Removing unquestionable personal attacks from your own user talk page is RARELY a matter of concern.", "Similarly, discussion of a user's conduct or history is not in itself a personal attack when done in the appropriate forum for such discussion (for example, the other editor's talk page, ..." , but this disagrees with [Universal code], WP:AVOIDYOU, WP:HOUNDING and Wikimedia terms of use
    • observor bias. As RfC editors, are far more likely to be or know admins who can semi-protect their page
$ At the moment based on WiR discussions and papers, the safe place being used is private groups off Wiki. This is also causing changes to the discoursefor new editors Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 22:04, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
  • Wakelamp: Sorry to see you were not successful with your first bio of a woman. Next time, please let me know while you are preparing your draft and I'll probably be able to help you along. You shouldn't give up. Many new contributors experience problems but manage to learn how to succeed. As for all your other comments in connection with the article, I think it is important to put things in context. The paper was written almost three years ago and appears to be based on experience over a lengthy period beforehand. As I mentioned earlier, the degree of harassment has not been so serious since the WMF took decisive action against it. Finally, in my opinion, most of the upsetting exchanges do not occur on the talk pages of the editors involved but rather on other talk pages such as those of the editors who initiate the problem or on sites dealing with article deletions, etc.--Ipigott (talk) 07:10, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
Thank you for all your work on the rating of women's articles new and previous, it is always great fun for me to find you have looked one of mine over (almost right away) and assessed it, or for previous ones have updated the rating - mostly/always in a positive direction!

Thank you for your contribution tirelessly to WiR activities and for the encouragement this brings to (still relatively) new editors in this field! Kaybeesquared (talk) 12:24, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Thank you so much, Kaybeesquared, but you are of course the one who deserves the recognition. It's always a pleasure for me to review or assess articles from contributors like you who take such an enterprising interest in improving the coverage of women on Wikipedia. It's wonderful to see such an array of high-quality articles. Please let me know if ever there's anything I can help you with.--Ipigott (talk) 12:32, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
Thank you - the improved quality has much to do with teamwork from IanTheArchivist and his prior and diligent research into the women we write about. Now planning more on the brave folks of Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service. Help on that would be brilliant.. can talk more on how to approach this further in new year... Thanks again. Happy Christmas! Kaybeesquared (talk) 12:49, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi

[edit]

Hello, you recently left a message on my Talk page concerning Women in Red. I'm happy to support. I am an administrator on the Twi Wikipedia and I would like to create and translate articles to my local Wiki. I'm happy to contribute and support any project related to this. Thank you ---- Robertjamal12 (talk) 10:02, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Yes, Robertjamal12, I noticed you expressed your intention when registering at Women in Red. It's good to see you are supporting the need to cover more women on the Twi wiki but it would be great if you could continue adding women's biographies here on the EN wiki too. I see by the way that you are the only contributor to the Twi wiki who also contributes in English - at least in accordance with Category:Wikipedians who contribute to the Twi Wikipedia.--Ipigott (talk) 10:10, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, I think that's the best way to start. Thank you for the heads up -- Robertjamal12 (talk) 10:30, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Happy New Year, Ipigott!
