Armando J. Pinho is a Portuguese full professor and researcher specialized in data compression, pattern recognition, information theory, machine learning, and bioinformatics. He is a faculty member at the University of Aveiro, Portugal [1], and has contributed significantly to the development of compression algorithms, genomic sequence analysis, image processing, and machine learning. Currently, he is a member of the Scientific Council of the University of Aveiro and former director (during 12 years) of the IEETA [2]. Professor Pinho has been appointed as one of the most influential scientists since 2022.

Education

[edit]

Professor Armando J. Pinho has a deep educational background in electrical engineering, beginning with his Bachelor’s degree in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal (1988). He then pursued a Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon, completing it in July 1991. Following this, he obtained his Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Aveiro in November 1996 (Cum laude). He further advanced his academic credentials by earning the title of Aggregated Professor in Electrotechnical Engineering in October 2009.

Career

[edit]

Professor Armando J. Pinho is a distinguished academic in the field of Informatics, currently serving as a Professor Catedrático (Full Professor) at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, since July 2020. He previously held the position of Professor Associado (Associate Professor) at the same institution from December 2002 to June 2020 and served as a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro from October 2006 to February 2008. His academic journey began at the University of Aveiro, where he was an Assistant from February 1994 to January 1997 and later became an Auxiliary Professor from January 1997 to December 2002. Throughout his career, Professor Pinho has made significant contributions to the fields of lossy and lossless data compression, with a particular emphasis on applications in genomic data and image processing. He has supervised numerous doctoral and master students and has actively participated in various high-impact research projects. He is currently member of several technical program committees, including the Data Compression Conference (DCC). Additionally, Professor Pinho has taken on leadership roles in academic evaluation, coordinating panels for the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, reflecting his commitment to the advancement of research and education.
