Calling him "the duke" before he inherits?

[edit]

Cavendish-Bentinck is referred to throughout this article as "the duke". However, he didn't inherit the dukedom until he was 83, long after most of the events in his life being described, and as an heir presumptive, he presumably wasn't even entitled to a courtesy title during this period. Is it proper to call him "the duke" retroactively" like this? I'm totally ignorant of UK peerage protocol, so I'm curious, but it does strike me as odd. --Jfruh (talk) 15:15, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He WAS specifically granted the style, rank, and precedence of the younger son of a duke in 1977,early in his time as heir presumptive to his brother...this was mentioned in Who's Who (1981 edition page 447,for example). But until their cousin died in 1977 he and his brother were known by their knighthoods.12.144.5.2 (talk) 02:53, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
