Possible routes for expanding this article

[edit]

I'm considering expanding this article to include discussion of other manikins similar to TAM, but predating her by several decades. These include the Transparent Men and Women produced by the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden and the German Health Museum (apparently now defunct) in Cologne, and the Visible Man and Woman plastic models originally produced by Renwall and later marketed by Revell, Lindberg, and Skilcraft.

But before I do so, I realize there are multiple possible routes that we could take, and we probably should have some consensus on which approach would be best.

Background on this article

[edit]

It appears that this article began under the title "Transparent anatomical manikin" but then moved to to current title, perhaps with the idea of adding discussions of other types of medical manikins, currently described in Mannequin under "Medical education" and "Emergency services training". It seems the rationale for this was the belief that there was a distinction between the spellings "manikin" and "mannequin". It appears from my research, so far, that the distinction is not so clear cut, with both spellings being used for both usages.

Also, the current redirects to this page include:

  • Transparent anatomical manikin
  • Manikins
  • Transparent Anatomical Mannikin
  • Transparent Anatomical Manikin
  • Transparent anatomical mannequin
  • Transparent woman
  • Transparent man
  • Transparent women
  • Transparent men

Other than Manikins, all of these redirects concern the transparent subset of manikins I'm considering writing about.

Possible approaches

[edit]

With this all said, I can think of a couple ways to proceed. My preference, if there are no objections would be to:

  • rewrite the "Medical education" and "Emergency services training" sections of Mannequin to more broadly address various kinds of manikins used in the medical field, including this kind.
  • rename / move this article to "Transparent men"
  • create / change redirects for "Manikin" and "Manikins" to point to the medical section of Mannequin
  • link the brief mention of this kind of manikin in Mannequin to this article.
  • expand this article as proposed.

Another alternative, if there is strong feeling that this article should remain with the current title would be to:

  • Create a new section in this article for the current content.
  • Move the "Medical education" and "Emergency services training" sections of Mannequin here.
  • Change all the redirects (except Manikins) to section links.
  • Expand the new section as proposed.

I am a newbie, WP:DONTBITE and haven't tried renaming articles before, so I'm not quite sure what's involved. Perhaps more experienced folks have some better insight as to what approach would work best, given the tools we have. I expect my additions would create a rather full article on its own, but realize that there must have been a reason for renaming it to "Manikin" in the first place.

Any thoughts or concerns?? Thanks!

  • I have started a proposed revision to this page in my sandbox to give y'all a sense on where I'm going with this. Obviously, the article needs a lot more work, including references, but it's a starting point for discussion.

I think this should clearly not be here, and I agree with your first suggestion to move to mannequin. I'm not sure that the information presented otherwise is actually notable, so I would possibly suggest deletion, rather than moving to transparent man. Proposed merge with Mannequin

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was to merge, and rename this page to Transparent Anatomical Manikin. McGeddon (talk) 12:40, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Mannequin article these are simply different spellings of the same word. Rathfelder (talk) 21:57, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge. It seems like a subset rather than a different spelling, but manikin is a stub article that mostly talks about the "Transparent Anatomical Manikin (TAM)" and only has a single sentence about medical manikins in general. The mannequin article already has more to say about them. --McGeddon (talk) 17:39, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 15 November 2016

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Not moved. Andrewa's comment seems a valid one. Although an article could be written on more general medical mannequins, this article isn't it - it is focused solely on the Rush model, which is a proper name.  — Amakuru (talk) 15:17, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Transparent Anatomical ManikinTransparent anatomical manikin – Unless "Transparent Anatomical Manikin" is a tradename. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 16:43, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - "Transparent Anatomical Manikin" does appear to be Richard Rush's trademark, but per this source there is a slightly wider article to be written, of which Rush's model is just one example. "Transparent medical manikin" might be a clearer title to aid distinction between Rush's model and others. --McGeddon (talk) 10:24, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Current article is a good stub focussed on the TAM produced by Rush, which easily satisfies the GNG (as does Harvey mannequin). Its title should be capitalised. A broader article might be written, but it's not obvious that it should be at this uncapitalised title (maybe medical education mannequin instead?) and the broader topic is already covered at Mannequin#Medical education. In summary, a lot of work could usefully be done in the topic area, but this proposed move would be a step backwards. Andrewa (talk) 00:36, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]

Nom says Unless "Transparent Anatomical Manikin" is a tradename, which it is. Supporter agrees it's a trademark but then states there is a slightly wider article to be written. But this is not that article. No case to answer. Andrewa (talk) 00:14, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

History of TAM

[edit]

I was involved in the stages of building the electronics and programming for TAM. I wrote an article relating to this at https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/tam-transparent-anatomical-mannequin-larry-wittkop/?trackingId=bOhk1SECRWazQr8UFzq0kw%3D%3D 98.215.192.132 (talk) 00:35, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
