"Shep" is a common name for herding dogs because it is such a short name, consisting of only one syllable. This is so the person directing the dog can do so as quick as possible, thus lessening the time needed to give commands.

There are a lot of one syllable names. Wouldn't it be more telling to say that it is a shortened version of "Shepherd"? Dystopos 21:17, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
