Paraphrasing sources

[edit]

We must paraphrase sources, not take soundbites from them. For example, if a source says something like "according to the Puranas, X were the greatest goldsmiths ever" then we can't say "X are the best ever goldsmiths". We have to show the statement in the context that it was made, in this case coming from an ancient, inherently dubious bit of writing as a comment on a situation then, not the situation now. A very common mis-use of sources comes when we say something like "X live in Y", citing some old secondary source that in turn is getting its information from an older source. People move around and we can't assume they are where they were. - Sitush (talk) 11:28, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The source was added to back up the fact that Sahotas migrated to the Jalandhar region, which are all those villages mentioned in the article. The study was even conducted on a village in which Bara Pind is located directly North of, as per the author. Larkha (talk) 15:22, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Larkha For starters, a "Brahmin record-keeper" is a dubious source of information. That is very probably why the source we cite mentions it, and why we need to do also. This is exactly the type of issue which I mentioned above.
There also seems to be a bit of an issue relating to how Jalandar is mentioned anyway - I need to think how best to explain it. - Sitush (talk) 16:37, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sitush and Larkha: Another thing that I noticed, while source may be from 1974, it uses content from British Era (page 35), talks about Denzil Ibbetson and "Sahotas being less than 5,000 in 1881" and being concentrated in Jullundur doab until 1894. That is the source is as good as WP:POISON since it uses WP:RAJ source, hence reliability is questionable. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:16, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sitush@Fylindfotberserk I see where you guys are coming from, especially with the Brahmin record-keeper. However, most historical information about Indian surnames are kept by record-keepers at Hardawar. Also, wouldn't the establishment of Bara Pind, literally meaning big village, and the brother villages not indicate that the Sahotas are prevalent in the Jalandhar district which also encompasses Phillaur? That was the point I was trying to make. The Sahota clan is still at these villages in large numbers. You've got village gates with Sahota plastered on them which at least go back to the 80s-90s. Larkha (talk) 17:31, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Larkha: I'm not talking about Brahmin record-keepers, I'm concerned about the source contravening WP:RAJ since the data they are taking is from that period and Raj era sources are not considered reliable in Wikipedia. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:40, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, I was not aware of that. Larkha (talk) 17:50, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
