"Up or out" as solution - what?

From the article:

Other companies have adopted "up or out" strategies, such as the Cravath System, in which employees who do not advance are periodically fired.

Isn't that kind of backwards? Things like "mandatory promotion" would intuitively be expected to make the effect of the Peter principle more severe, if anything. It should be clarified in the paragraph what exactly the logic here is. --84.63.213.184 (talk) 09:07, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

It's not meant to be a solution to the problem, it's an extreme example of it. Richard75 (talk) 11:49, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
