Pageton decline

[edit]

I grew up in Pageton in the 1960s. It was a safe place to live. Every Dad worked in the mines or had a coal related job. The houses all look alike. There are two types of houses. One story and two story. At one time the mining companies owned the homes but by the time I came along the homes were privately owned by the employees. Most homes were nice and comfortable. Most , if not all, burned coal for heat. It was the kind of place where you could leave your doors unlocked.

We never heard of any crime. There was never any real traffic.

The schools were as good as most today. My education was good and the teachers were good. Now the town and McDowell county in general is in shambles. The mines and company stores are closed. Most people have left. Two back to back floods destroyed many homes and businesses in 2000 and 2001. I believe those are the correct years. Many buildings have been razed. I don't think the county will ever recover. 2601:5C1:301:3C40:159F:BCD8:6866:179F (talk) 19:33, 11 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
