Etymology?

[edit]

I would expect that a couple of centuries of philologists & scholars has resulted with at least one etymology of this placename. FWIW, the first two syllables resemble the Greek orkhis or "testicle", whence comes "orchid" the modern name of the flower, & the last two meno, or "to last, withstand" -- "withstanding [enemy] virility" or "powerful defence"? -- llywrch (talk) 16:05, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient History

[edit]

Ok guys, I've seen the word "Roman Republican" used here and democrat in another article. This has to be corrected, to Roman Republic forces and remove democrat from elsewhere. The gatekeepers have allowed both edits to go through. Meroitte (talk) 11:20, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
