Spelling

Why do we spell 'cocaine' with and without an 'e' in the first sentence? I'd go with an 'e'.

It should be noted that quoting this guy should be done carefully. The first sentence of his translation misses out the time of year and should read: "Early one morning at the start of October I, Vadim Maslennikov, set off for school..."
