"Open source"

[edit]

This article repeatedly refers to MongoDB as "open source". Is that still true? In 2018 (according to the "MongoDB" article here), the license was changed from the GNU Affero General Public License to MongoDB's own "Server Side Public License".

They submitted this to the OSI but then withdrew it. Fedora and other distributions have removed MongoDB because it doesn't meet their standards for open source. Bruce Perens, one of the authors of the Open Source Definition (in the ZDNet article linked from the Wikipedia "MongoDB" page) said "Just don't call it Open Source". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.109.4.101 (talk) 15:32, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Requested Changes & Expansion

[edit]

Hi. My name is Toni Bird and I work for MongoDB. In compliance with WP:COI, I would like to request an impartial editor consider the three edits/additions below.

1. CIA backing concern section -> History section
==CIA backing concern==MongoDB Inc., then known as 10gen, has received funding from the U.S. Government through the CIA-sponsored venture capital arm In-Q-Tel. This has been a source of concern in India.
+
In 2013, the Identification Authority of India adopted MongoDB's software to analyze registration trends for new identity documents used to obtain government benefits in India. This raised concerns of potential espionage, since at-the-time MongoDB was partially funded by the United States CIA venture capital arm, In-Q-Tel. As of 2013, there is no known evidence the CIA actually has any influence over MongoDB.
Explanation: The current "CIA backing concern" section is very ambiguous and vague. It just says "This has been a source of concern in India." It also has a dedicated section contrary to WP:CRITS. My proposal is to remove the "CIA backing concern" section and replace it with the more specific description in the history section.

2. Expanding History
The company's initial public offering was on October 20, 2017, and a secondary offering was held on June 29, 2021.

By 2017, MongoDB had raised $311 million in funding from venture capitalists. MongoDB filed for an initial public offering on September 21, 2017 and went public on NASDAQ that October 20th. It raised $192 million, valuing the company at $1.6 billion overall. Its market capitalization varied greatly afterwards, reaching $39 billion in 2021 and coming back down to $10 billion by 2024. MongoDB acquired database engine company WiredTiger in 2014, followed by database-as-a-service company MLab for $68 million in 2018. The following year, in 2019, MongoDB acquired a mobile-focused database company called Realm for $39 million. In 2022, MongoDB established its own venture capital fund.
