What qualifies as a "list"?

User:Touth has been adding a bunch of articles to this list, but the articles being added are generally not lists. (Specifically, Pac Man, Castlevania, Shining Force series, Dragon Quest, and Mortal Kombat series.) They contain lists, but are not themselves lists. The question is, should this article contain links to other articles that include lists, or only those other articles that are lists? Powers 01:14, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

This is an article about lists, not articles with lists. Tons of articles contain lists; there's no point in listing all of them here. Thus, we should only add articles that are a list, not ones that simply contain one. I'm reverting Touth's edits again; if he has a problem with it, he can discuss it here. -- LGagnon 15:33, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
I think both should be on this page if only LGagnon would let me do it and anyway why should they have to start with the wordslist of? i think the series articles should be here too! Touth 20:30, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
We already have an article for series; that's List of computer and video game franchises. This article is a list of lists, not series. We're not going to be redundant and have the same content here as in the franchise list. -- LGagnon 20:36, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree with LGagnon, please leave these articles off the page. --ADeveria 22:02, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
I also agree with LGagnon - they're not for here. HawkerTyphoon 23:34, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Zelda

Touth, stop adding the Zelda link. It's not a list, and thus does not belong in this article. I've told you this again and again, that only lists should be linked from this article. I don't care if you can't create a list because it's a redirect; what matters is that only lists are supposed to be listed here. -- LGagnon 01:18, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Categories are better than lists

Shouldn't one expect a list of all computer and video games here instead of a list of lists? This just reminds me of all those pr0n lists out there. ;)
I know this would be an insanely long list, but still. Currently, this list and the Category:Lists of games is redundant. -- Lightkey 04:34, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Why have lists, when you can have categories that are easy to update? Chris Pickett 21:25, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

 • Many of these lists contain more details than seems to be available through the default Categorization functionality (i.e. release dates, region info, publishers, etc.)
 • Many of the entries in these lists are the only info in Wikipedia on these titles (i.e. there are lots of games that still need pages created), so to maintain complete lists via categories requires significant effort to create all the stub pages.

Though perhaps some wiki guru knows good solutions to those issues. Perhaps Generated Lists? Kolano 02:27, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

I don't see any problem with the lists. A good percent of lists are categories already (List of Wii games: all games are listed under a Wii games cat as one example): but that doesn't mean one should be deleted, to favor the other. RobJ1981 03:39, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
 • Maybe I'm too much of a newb to know how to use them but, categories don't seem to show up readily via the Wikipedia search feature.
 • Possibly due to the above, the list pages seem to get significant amounts more traffic. Comparing the discussion pages of a few of the lists vs. their equivalent category shows this. Especially since the lists can show missing titles, they also provide useful centralized locations for content improvement projects.

List of Windows games (excluding "Games for Windows" label) ?

As the subject says, where is this category? Under PC, there is Mac, MS-DOS and the new "Games for Windows" label but no regular Windows category. Should this be added, or is there a reason not to add it? ---Majestic- 20:07, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I was wondering the same thing, but I suppose the end product would become absolutely huge, even if we limited it to every notable game release from Windows 95 and onwards. As such, I suppose it might be a bit too big a project to undertake. But hey, if someone out there feels like it... go for it. This category would be a welcome addition. --RoyalFool 19:15, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Linux games

Why is there still no list of Linux games. Linux is growing enough mainstream now to have it's own list I think. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.78.165.201 (talk) 13:44, August 27, 2007 (UTC)

Change title to 'List of video games'?

We should change the title to 'List of video games' instead of 'Lists...'? WinterSpw 02:05, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

No. SharkD 08:20, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
I agree with SharkD. The article doesn't contain a list of video games – instead, it's a list of lists of video games... Tommy Kronkvist talk contribs —Preceding comment was added at 14:51, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
I do also agree with SharkD but then I wonder where is the complete list of all video games? And why was the name of page actually changed afterall? Erquint —Preceding undated comment added 02:16, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

Template?

It'd be nice if someone could create a template for List of console video games which would include Atari, NES, PS2, etc and another template for handhelds (gba, psp, etc). These would be added in the lists (List of Wii games) at the bottom. MahangaTalk 03:26, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

It would be nice to have a standard templates for these lists, but I'm not sure handheld systems would need a different template. The template would need to account for significant differences in list lengths (i.e. some list page are sub-divided, some are not), as well as an appropriate set of meta-data to capture (release dates, regions, publishers, etc) (or a syntax that can accounts for column differences). Redirect

Why does "List of games" redirect here to Lists of video games and not to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lists_of_games ? 164.214.1.54 (talk) 12:42, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Proposed reorganisation of list by name articles

The current list of video games by name articles are showing heavy bias towards the former letters of the alphabet and against the latter letters. Therefore I propose reorganising the lists.

The combined list of video games by name, without the header and footer material, takes up 139 KiB. I propose dividing it up as follows:

The problem is what to do with the current articles. Should they be moved into the new names, or deleted, and the new articles created from scratch? Also, the new proposal has one article fewer, so at least one old article should be deleted or turned into a redirect. JIP | Talk 16:35, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Or perhaps this way?

Alternate titles, and columns in Lists of articles

I'd like to invite anyone contributing to these "list of" pages to take part in a discussion we are currently having on the Talk:List of Nintendo 64 games#Removal of Alternate Titles and Number of Players where we are discussing the use of keeping alternate titles in the "List of...games" some have suggested that they take up too much space and that other columns could seem to be "useful only to fans", and other things that have been mentioned that, and other 'List of' talk pages. I think the alternate titles may be better as

Wikipedia Main Title Year Developer/Publisher Regions released Number of Players
1080° Snowboarding 1998 Nintendo/Nintendo JP, NA, PAL 1-4
64: Tenshi no Yakusoku 1999 Altron/Altron JP 1
AeroFighters Assault
Sonic Wings AssaultJP
1997 Paradigm Entertainment/Video System JP, NA, PAL 1-4
Michael Owen's WLS 2000
Mia Hamm 64 SoccerUSA
RTL World League Soccer 2000GER
Telefoot Soccer 2000FRA
2000 Silicon Dreams/THQ and SouthPeak Games NA, PAL 1-4

Please come and give your opinion, and hopefully keep these type of concerns from arising again and again at each "List of" pages. (Floppydog66 (talk) 23:51, 18 December 2008 (UTC))

You can create a bulletted list and give each title its own bullet. Likewise for platforms, multiple developers/publishers etc. For instance:
{| class="wikitable sortable" style="font-size:85%;"
|-
! style="width:6em;" | Year !! Title !! style="width:8em;" | Developer !! style="width:8em;" | Publisher !! style="width:8em;" | Setting !! style="width:8em;" | Platform !! Notes
|- style="vertical-align: top;"
| || Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliberオウガバトル64 Person of Lordly Caliber || QuestNintendo || Atlus || Fantasy || N64 || Tactical RPG.Sequel to Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen.

Please check discussion at Talk:List of Nintendo 64 games#Bulletted sub-lists for more, we seems to have discussed it a bit more there. I watch both pages so either place is just fine. (Floppydog66 (talk) 18:08, 7 April 2009 (UTC))

List of Sega games?

Section three of this article, entitled "By Publisher," does not contain a link "List of games by Sega." I find it hard to believe that Wikipedia does not contain an article that compiles all games published by Sega. A quick search turned up List_of_Sega_games which is just a disambiguation page. It does not include games published by Sega after they stopped making consoles. Besides, every other major publisher has a full-blown list so why not Sega? I probably just can't find it, but it should still be listed here. Bobnorwal (talk) 03:13, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

"Ludography" vs. "Softography"

Which of these is the preferred term in WP? Or should some other phrase be used to describe lists of games? 2fort5r (talk) 13:55, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Standardization of Video Game Lists

Comparing a few different lists of video games, it seems that there are a few different formats for these lists. The most functional lists have all the titles grouped together, and can be sorted by each of the categories (such as by release date, title, etc.). The List of NES Games is a great example. On the other hand, there are lists that are sorted by letter. Some allow sorting within each letter, and others simply have a list of links.

Is there a sort of standardization for these lists? Is there a reason that not all of them have as much information (and are sortable by each header)?

I figured I should ask before attempting to make any changes (especially as I am a novice). Chris Klammer (talk) 22:55, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
