Hoysala Art Dineshkannambadi 19:16, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]

Hi. recently I travelled to over 15 hoysala temples in a few districts of Karnataka and had the opportunity to take some great photos. I have put some of them in this page and given some details about features of their art. There are more images I will later put, like from transitional chalukya-->hoysala temples, examples of dvikuta (2 Vimanas), Chatushkuta (4 vimanas) etc. Feel free to add to this or better arrange the page contents.

Naming issues

[edit]

There are a few minor issues with naming consistencies in the article. Probably all are valid transliterations, but perhaps some or all of the following spellings should be standardized within the article when not directly quoting a source or reference. If so, here's my list.

  • Reference Premakumar, B.P.. Architectural marvel is also spelled Premkumar, and the source link to check is dead.

DK linked back.Dineshkannambadi 18:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Amrithapura is used interchangeably with Amritapura to refer to the same entity; both go to the same redirected wikilinked article.

DK I have changed the place name to Amruthapura and temple name to Amruteswara Temple. the "i" instead of "u" was my mistake. Dineshkannambadi 13:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Kesava Temple at Somanathapura is also referred to as Keshava.

DK Both names are valid and often used. I will try to make it consistant.Dineshkannambadi 13:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Shiva’s consort, Parvathi and Parvati are both used in the article, but go to the same wikilinked article, so I'm assuming it's the same goddess.

DK I have changed to Parvati. Yes, both refer to same deity.Dineshkannambadi 13:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • The sculpture Salabhanjika coexists with Salabanjika .

DK Made it consistant with "h".Dineshkannambadi 13:12, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hoysaleswara and Hoysaleshwara are both used aso a temple name.

DK Done.Dineshkannambadi 18:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Reference Raghavendra, Srinidhi. In need of support. is a second dead source link which also uses the spelling Ragavendra.

I will look into these issues this weekend.thanks for bringing it up.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 12:22, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have fixed the broken links and made the consistancy changes to temple names. Having done this, it must be known that temples in India can often be called by slightly different pronounciations, even by historians. Thus, Kesava-Keshava and Hoysaleswara-Hoysalesvara-Hoysaleshwara are all the same. So in such cases, the best identification is the location (town/city). Even the spelling variation of Amrithapura-Amruthapura is a commonly found.thanksDineshkannambadi 18:08, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent work, as usual. You do raise up an interesting point which affects a number of India-based articles, as well as other article categories which frequently use transliterated text. I know that there are multiple valid spellings for many proper nouns and, further, that some spellings must vary due to direct title references, quotes, and the like. But, in your opinion is it otherwise desirable to make the spellings consistent within the article for the reader's benefit? I am not qualified to make a decision on the preferred spelling for such articles, but is consistency there worth worrying about? If not, I can ignore a lot of current FAs (and obviously a huge number of less than FA-level articles) with these type of spelling variations. But if it does matter, then consistency spelling issues are common, e.g. found even within your own list of FA articles. Michael Devore 20:19, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you find spelling inconsistancies in my FA's, please feel free to point it out on my user page and I shall rectify it. But the problem is when someone else comes along, finds my way of spelling, though consistant in the article, unacceptable and makes a few quick changes by spot checking. Then both our efforts are wasted. However, we can only do what we can do. Currently, even with spelling consistancy in the FA article, the image files may have a slightly different spelling for the temple/monument name. So long as the summary in the image file gives full details of the location etc, then it should be ok. If the image file name spelling it very different, then I will reload the file with correct spelling of the temple/monument/sculpture and delete the older version.thanksDineshkannambadi 21:36, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MoS issues

[edit]

Does this policy, Avoid sandwiching text between two images facing each other, still applies? If so, what does the page means? Why were the two images in Temple deities section were put in such a way that the text are sandwiched? --βritandβeyonce (talkcontribs) 05:49, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have taken care of this issue.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 06:00, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I thought its not applicable anymore. --βritandβeyonce (talkcontribs) 06:48, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Angkor Wat

[edit]

Reminds me of Angkor Wat. Indian architecture says "Indian style Hindu and Buddhist temples were constructed abroad in ancient times, with especially noteworthy uses of this style in Cambodia's Angkor Wat, and Java's Prambanan." WAS 4.250 10:17, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copy edit lead sentence

[edit]

I removed "distinctive" from the lead sentence since this doesn't really add much to the article and the lead should be as susinct(sp) as possible. Thanks, --Tom 18:53, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

It looks like there are many duplicate wiki links to the same articles? I will try to delink these. Any reason this was over looked? Anyways, congrats on feature/front page, Cheers! --Tom 18:58, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quality of this article

[edit]

How did this get featured when it's littered with POV statements like "Hoysala temples offer an excellent opportunity for pilgrims", "beautifully sculptured figures adorn the top", "a virtuoso carving style", "parapets all richly decorated". There's also a lot of unsourced "may be" and "could be considered", and "perhaps the most"s. What gives? Yeanold Viskersenn 20:13, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I do not see any where "could be considred" is mentioned. It would be better if you mention which claim needs to be sourced. The article is well sourced from various reliable sources and scholars. I agree, the statements that look like POV, although well-cited, may do well with a minor copyedit. - KNM Talk 20:28, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeanold Viskersenn needs to give some slack for the fact that this article is about "Architecture", and in such articles, some adjectives do creep in. Calling the article uncited is ofcourse incorrect. Please be more specific where you want citations and I shall provide it.thanksDineshkannambadi 20:34, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not asking for citations, I'm wondering why such POV is in the article in the first place. "excellent opportunity" and "beautiful" are not objective facts by any stretch of the imagination. Yeanold Viskersenn 20:48, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeanold is right. Beautiful? I see Weasel Words creeping in. "Is considered by some leading authorities on architecture[who?] to be beautiful" would be better. Cited, of course. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry 18:06, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dk Reply Ok. I will give this a light copy edit to remove weasel words and

too many adjectives. Please give me a week or so to take care of this issue.ThanksDineshkannambadi 18:30, 2 December 2007 (UTC) I have requested a very experienced copy editor to look into this, to make it more objective and should be done shortly.thanks.Dineshkannambadi 18:35, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been copyedited and some flowery words eliminated.thanksDineshkannambadi 18:25, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What's with the overflowing hyperbole at the start of the "sculpture" section? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gettongi (talkcontribs) 01:30, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Famous temples template

[edit]

Transcluding {{Famous Hoysala temples}} is plain daft and makes the article more difficult to edit than is necessary. Please can we convert this into a list. Then remove all the non-notable examples.

Please note that in due course I am also going to be proposing a merge of Lesser known temples of the Hoysala Empire because the titling is entirely subjective. - Sitush (talk) 15:41, 9 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
