The Three "Hal Hansen/Hanson" problem

[edit]

According to the NFL book about coaching biographies, there were three Hal Hanson/Hansen's on the Minnesota Golphers team.[1]

  • Harlen C. Hansen -- 1915-1916 Letterwinner as a lineman, who later played running back for Green Bay
  • Harold Frederick Hansen -- 1916 halfback who went on to be a head coach at St Thomas (1918), Hamline (1919-1920), an assistant coach for Georgia Tech, a head coach for the 1926 AFL Newark Bears, and 1932 Staten Island Stapletons.
  • Harold Walter Hanson -- 2-time All-American guard from 1925-1927 who played for the Frankford Yellowjackets and Minneapolis Marines

To make matters worse, sports-reference.com lists a Harold William Hanson as the head coach of the 1932 Staten Island Stapletons.
