----A GOOD SUPPLY OF INFORMATION----

[edit]

HI,

I've discovered what may be a more unbiased source for this discussion. Please see the article entitled "Honor Lite" in the Students Section of the March 22, 2002 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education. If you are a student at a university, chances are pretty good that your library subscribes to it (both the health science and regular library subscribe to it at mine). Very enlightening article. I trust this source more than The Ubyssey and e.Peak (I don't trust those sources at all). Good luck finding the article.

For those who have no way of accessing the Chronicle article, you can read a different, but similar, article at [1]. This is how I discovered the Chronicle article.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll try to access it when I next have time. --Neurophyre(talk) 04:57, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very useful article. Thanks.Nilvyn 19:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC) Nilvyn 19:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notables

[edit]

It appears that there have been issues with the notable member in the past, leading to its removal. I have restarted a list from scratch as the is a standard part of honor society articles as described by WikiProject Fraternities and Sororities. I have limited the list to individuals with Wikipedia articles that mention society membership. I also divided members into college and honorary, to avoid confusion. This is a society with many members. Priority should be placed on identifying notable collegiate members with Wikipedia articles, to avoid future conflict. Also, in finding secondary sources to document membership. Rublamb (talk) 23:20, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was the primary questioner of the memberlist in the past. The criterion of "having a Wikipedia article that mentions Golden Key" is circular sourcing, and it won't really work for maintaining a memberlist. We don't have any information in the article about what constitutes a "collegiate member" versus an "honorary member", nor do we have any sense that this is an important aspect of these people's activities (is it something they just paid a few hundred dollars to put on their resumes, or do they actually do some kind of work with the institution that merits mention in the article?). Many of the claims of membership are unsourced or poorly sourced on the member articles; at random, I looked at Ras Asan Olugbenga, which has no source for membership and is frankly a profoundly spammy article, and Norman Robinson (television news reporter), which just links to his own webpage's promotional bio (basically, a resume). Being as this has been an article with substantial WP:PROMO problems, and given that we don't have any good sense of what the importance of membership is for any given member, I think any memberlist should only be sourced from independent, third-party reliable sources. (It does not need to be limited to notable people, though I imagine few third-party sources will list non-notable members.) Chubbles (talk) 00:14, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ChubblesPicked Dean L. Bresciani sort of at random. Saw that Golden Key was mentioned on the Wikipedia article about him, which ultimately led to https://www.ndsu.edu/news/view/detail/5304 which is about as good of a reference as you can ask for. I have issues with Golden Key and these certainly need reference, but in this case, needs more work before deleting them all.Naraht (talk) 01:41, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just used that as a starting point and, as I said, sources are needed and are a priority. I will circle back and work on it eventually. The membership section could be expanded to explain the types of members but it is very typical for professional GLOs and honor societies to have regular (student) and honorary members. I don't think the average reader would find that confusing, especially since the term "honorary" is self-defining. Rublamb (talk) 02:58, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Chubbles: In the meantime, please do not remove sourced content from the notables articles about their membership in Golden Key as those sources and details may be useful in finding sources for this article. Rublamb (talk) 03:44, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem with the independently-sourced list entries, and I'm happy to give a grace period for an article under construction here, but there are serious BLP and NPOV issues with some of the articles linked to, and I have no compunction about shaving those down. Can we define exactly what Golden Key means by Student and Honorary members and what their roles are vis-a-vis the institution? Chubbles (talk) 14:38, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Golden Key is an honor society that recognizes people for academic accomplishments. As with most honor societies, it is a type of award, with little involvement required other than that. The article Honor society does a good job of defining these groups. With regards to the linked articles included in the list of notables: as long as an article is in Wikipedia, we assume good faith and notability; if you believe some qualify for tags or AfD, feel free to proceed. I tend go with tags and hope for future improvement, but an AfD might get a quicker result. Rublamb (talk) 16:42, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notables needing sources

[edit]

I am removing the following from the list of notables because they need a source to document their connection with Golden Key. They can be restored once a source is found.
