Gelati is different than gelato, though in the original Italian the word "gelati" is actually the plural of "gelato". It is a layered mix or parfait of water ice and ice cream (typically soft-serve or frozen custard). This misnomer appears to have originated in the East Coast of the US (perhaps on the Jersey Shore), but is beginning to spread as locations serving water ice gain popularity. Rita's Water Ice makes gelati and refer to it on their webpage, under products and promotions, at ritasice.com
