birth year

[edit]

The Italian wiki states it is 1917, not 1914. But my Italian is bad, so I do not understand the text. Weia (talk) 13:44, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

She ced in W95 in 2010, therefore the latter year of birth is more likely. See also this link where she is listed as 95 years old for the 2010 competition: http://www.world-masters-athletics.org/records/outdoor-women --Maxl (talk) 10:27, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to several sources, including the athlete herself, the year 1914 was a transcription error that the Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera intentionally kept so that she could compete in higher age divisions. Here's the original Italian report and an English summary of what happened (split between paragraphs 1 and 3). The Italian report comes directly from an interview from the athlete, and goes against her own interests (basically saying that FIDAL has chosen to maintain false information), so I would guess that this is most likely to be true. I suppose mention of all this in the actual article wouldn't hurt... Canadian Paul 17:31, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The crazy thing is that it seems she has played with her date of birth, but I know personally (via Facebook), all members of the Ottoz family and they claim that she was born in 1914. Will ask Eddy Ottoz to intervene personally on this page. --Kasper2006 (talk) 06:29, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably not appropriate, as it would likely be construed as original research, but if you can get him to submit something through the Wikipedia:Volunteer Response Team, they might be able to use it to settle the issue. Canadian Paul 23:15, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Based on information provided by Kasper, I was able to locate this record documenting an arrival of a 9 year old girl November 20, 1923 to Ellis Island. Login as wikitrack pw=4wikipedi1 I suggest it would be hard, though not impossible, to pass off a 5 year old as a 9 year old just by physical appearance to professional customs officers. Less likely that one who would grow to be one of the best discus throwers in the world just 13 years later would exhibit stunted growth. They probably had additional documentation. Wikipedia has now taken the age dispute public, even though we don't know factually what is true. We have conflicting sources. mastersathletics, WMA and FIDAL accept 1914. sports-reference reports and the interview suggests 1917. I suggest we write a section explaining the age dispute in as much detail as we have and remove the reference to the specific birthdate. As mentioned elsewhere, changing the birthdate invalidates 4 world records. We need to get this right before making a factual statement. Trackinfo (talk) 20:40, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
